Contemporary societies are characterized by increasing role multiplicity and accelerated social change, intensifying identity-related strain and inter-role conflict. Although role theory, narrative identity research, and psychological flexibility frameworks have independently advanced the understanding of psychological adaptation, an integrative structural model explaining how life domains are hierarchically organized and reorganized over time remains underdeveloped. This manuscript introduces Casa Vital (Vital House), a dynamic structural model that conceptualizes identity as a hierarchical architecture of interdependent life domains organized around a central integrative function. The model proposes three core constructs: structural coherence, structural modes (rigidity/flexibility) and self-directed agency, and argues that psychological adaptation depends not only on emotional regulation or narrative coherence but also on the capacity to reorganize domain hierarchies in alignment with personal values and contextual demands. By positioning identity at a meso-structural level of analysis, the framework integrates sociological, narrative, and contextual behavioral traditions while offering testable hypotheses and a falsifiable research agenda. Casa Vital expands the current models of adaptation by introducing hierarchical structural reorganization as a central component of identity functioning in complex contemporary contexts. Full article

Polymer coatings are integral to nearly every modern cardiovascular and endovascular device, including drug-eluting stents (DESs) and drug-coated balloons (DCBs), bioabsorbable vascular scaffolds (BVSs), occluders, grafts, and catheter and guidewire hydrophilic surfaces. Persistent complications, including late stent thrombosis, delayed endothelialization, hypersensitivity, and restenosis, show that coatings actively shape biological responses rather than acting as inert drug carriers. Their surface chemistry, drug release kinetics, and degradation behavior are upstream determinants of blood– and tissue–material responses that govern healing and failure. This review frames coating selection as a structure–property–biological response problem. It surveys the major classes of synthetic polymer coatings and the defining surface and bulk properties. This review also examines how composition and architecture control drug release, and traces the interfacial cascade of protein adsorption, coagulation and complement activation, platelet and leukocyte responses, and neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation. These mechanisms are linked to contemporary design strategies that improve hemocompatibility, limit thrombosis, promote endothelial recovery, and tune degradation, and to the standardization and translation gaps that remain. The central message is that polymer coatings are not biologically equivalent. Their surface chemistries and degradation profiles determine the thrombo-inflammatory outcomes. Therefore, coating design should be guided by intended biological response, not drug release alone. Full article

The primary aim of this study was to validate a self-assessment instrument about the organisation of the Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) environment and to investigate how early childhood educators perceive their educational environments, including quality, intentionality (specifically, their anticipatory considerations in planning the ECEC environment) and pedagogical dynamics. The EduIn&Out Organisation of ECEC Environments Questionnaire was completed by 802 Portuguese ECEC educators (children’s ages 3–6) and explored educators’ perceptions of various aspects of the ECEC environment, including the quality of the organisation of the space, materials and equipment (both indoor and outdoor), time management and daily routines, family and child participation, coordination with the educational team and with the centre’s leadership. It also gathers educators’ characterisation of their pedagogical dynamics (routine flow, children’s agency, and the use of indoor and outdoor contexts), associated with the quality of the educational environment, and educators’ intentionality while considering different needs and interests when organising the educational environment. The tool demonstrated good psychometric characteristics. Educators reported higher quality in time and routine organisation, but lower quality in outdoor spaces, family and child participation and coordination with the centre’s leadership. Enhanced quality was associated with more stimulating, child-centred routines that balanced indoor and outdoor activities. Overall, the characteristics of the instrument highlight its potential for supporting educators’ reflection. Full article

Small ruminant production in Kosovo is predominantly extensive, and biosecurity practices remain poorly characterized. The emergence of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) in Europe (beginning in 2024) and the first confirmed case in Kosovo (July 2025) highlight the urgent need for baseline biosecurity data to inform disease control. A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted on 63 small ruminant farms (53 meat-producing, 10 dairy-producing) across seven municipalities in Kosovo between September 2025 and February 2026. Biosecurity practices were assessed using the Biocheck.UGent™ questionnaire during direct on-farm visits. External (Ext) biosecurity scores (preventing pathogen introduction) were higher (p < 0.0001) than internal (Int) scores (limiting spread within farms). For external biosecurity, the highest scores were observed for purchase and reproduction (Ext A), intermediate scores existed for feed and water (Ext C) and visitors and farm workers (Ext D), and the lowest scores were found for transport and carcass removal (Ext B) and infrastructure (Ext E). For internal biosecurity, the highest scores were observed for lamb/kid management (Int H) and dairy management (Int I), followed by the management of adult animals (Int J); work organization (Int K) and reproduction management (Int G) formed an intermediate-low cluster, whereas disease management (Int F) scored the lowest. Benchmarking against the Biocheck.UGent™ worldwide database (predominantly intensive systems, thus not directly comparable) indicated that internal biosecurity and overall biosecurity levels were lower than the benchmark, while external biosecurity was comparable for some components. Given the convenience sample (36.4% response rate), findings are exploratory and are not directly generalizable. Larger herd size was positively correlated with external (ρ = 0.54, p < 0.0001), internal (ρ = 0.35, p = 0.005), and overall (ρ = 0.57, p < 0.0001) biosecurity scores. This first empirical biosecurity assessment of small ruminant farms in Kosovo reveals critical gaps in transport hygiene, disease management, and reproductive management pathways that enable PPR spread and perpetuate endemic zoonoses. The positive association between herd size and biosecurity may indicate structural barriers and/or knowledge gaps for small farms. Current biosecurity tools, designed for intensive systems, require adaptation for extensive production systems. These findings provide a baseline for targeted interventions, policy development, and validation of context-appropriate biosecurity instruments in Kosovo and similar extensive systems globally. Wave overtopping is one of the most complex coastal hazards to characterize in field conditions due to its high non-linearity and the interaction between unsteady hydrodynamics and wave–structure processes. To get insights into the underlying occurrence and persistence of overtopping, this study proposes an integration of numerical and data-driven models. Multi-month field observations made at a breakwater are used to investigate the hydro-meteorological parameters causing overtopping initiation and persistence. High-frequency video-derived overtopping detections are combined with coupled ADCIRC–UnSWAN (ADvanced CIRCulation–Unstructured Simulating WAves Nearshore) hindcasts to construct near-structure hydro-meteorological conditions. The results reveal a clear dynamical asymmetry showing that overtopping initiation corresponds to exceedance of crest elevation at individual wave-scale associated with elevated wave height, water level, wave steepness, and wind characteristics, whereas overtopping persistence depends on short-term temporal effects associated with wave energy, direction, and sustained water levels. Gradient-boosted decision trees, temporal convolutional networks, and Transformer models are employed, demonstrating that persistence cannot be inferred from instantaneous sea-states alone, indicating a separation of timescales between triggering and sustained overtopping dynamics. These findings provide field-scale evidence of distinct hydrodynamic regimes governing overtopping processes, highlighting the importance of temporal characteristics for understanding overtopping dynamics and developing predictive coastal hazard frameworks. Mosquito control personnel work within health departments, public works, private companies, and other agencies. These essential outdoor workers have highly specialized training and are faced with a variety of potential health and safety hazards (e.g., arthropod bites and stings, exposure to insecticides and other chemicals, working with heavy equipment, noise, heat, solar ultraviolet radiation, slips, trips, and/or falls). Mosquito control personnel undergo employer-provided and other types of training on a variety of topics from regulatory updates to new surveillance and control techniques that are required for safety purposes and to maintain their applicator license. Here, an exploratory baseline survey was conducted among members of the North Carolina Mosquito and Vector Control Association (NCMVCA) and the Virginia Mosquito Control Association (VMCA). There was a 28% response rate so results should be interpreted with caution in this pilot study. Most respondents reported utilizing ultra-low volume insecticide application equipment for controlling adult mosquitoes. Backpack sprayers were utilized by less than half of respondents. Those who reported using respirators showed higher concern about insecticide-related health effects than those who did not use respirators. Outdoor workers encounter various potential hazards and utilize several forms of personal protective equipment to reduce risks. This baseline work can be considered a starting point for implementing and strengthening occupational safety and health awareness and preventive measures for mosquito control workers. Knowledge of health and safety hazards can reduce workplace risk. Full article

Background/Objectives: The trajectory of influenza hospitalization burden from pre-COVID-19 pandemic baseline through post-pandemic recovery remains poorly characterized at the national level. This study characterized phase-stratified burden and seasonal structure, quantified racial and ethnic disparities, and assessed whether post-pandemic seasons represent anomalous departures from pre-pandemic expectations. Methods: Sixteen complete seasons of FluSurv-NET surveillance data (2009–2010 through 2024–2025; 509 observation weeks) were analyzed across pre-pandemic, disruption, and recovery phases using OLS regression with effect-size estimation, bootstrapped age-adjusted rate ratios, seasonal-trend decomposition (STL), Prophet time-series forecasting, and Isolation Forest anomaly detection. Results: Mean peak weekly hospitalization rate nearly doubled from pre-pandemic to recovery (5.1 to 11.1 per 100,000), cumulative seasonal burden increased from 46.3 to 87.0 per 100,000, and median peak timing advanced from MMWR week 9 to week 50. STL decomposition revealed a marked shift from weak pre-pandemic seasonality (Fs = 0.14) to substantially stronger annual regularity (Fs = 0.98) across three recovery seasons, with threefold amplitude increase. Non-Hispanic Black persons had rate ratios of 1.72, 2.16, and 1.99 relative to White persons across phases; American Indian and Alaska Native persons showed the highest disruption-phase ratio (2.24, 95% CI 1.90–3.53), based on two contributing seasons. A flat-growth Prophet model detected first exceedance in February 2020, outperforming a linear-growth specification on held-out validation. Isolation Forest identified 2017–2018, 2023–2024, and 2024–2025 as robust anomalies across all contamination thresholds. Conclusions: Post-COVID-19 pandemic influenza recovery is characterized by intensified and restructured seasonality, persistent racial and ethnic disparities, and anomalous burden exceeding pre-pandemic projections, identified independently by time-series forecasting and unsupervised anomaly detection. Background: Healthcare-associated bloodstream infections (HABSIs) are among the main categories of nosocomial infections. This analysis aims to identify the clinical characteristics of patients in the emergency department (ED) who will develop a HABSI during their hospital stay. Methods: Main outcome measures were HABSI and the cumulative survival rate at 30 days. The features tested in a logistic model were age, sex, vitals by the National Early Warning Score (NEWS), priority levels, main complaints, comorbidities by the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), trauma-related disease, main diagnosis and ED length of stay. Results: In 414 (2.3%) out of 18,304 patients, aged 75 (16) years, mean (SD), a diagnosis of HABSI was recorded. HABSIs occurred in subjects with main diagnosis of diseases of the respiratory system (N = 116; 28.0%), digestive system (N = 72; 17.4%), and circulatory system (N = 68; 16.4%). The main key clinical features selected by the logistic model were: NEWS > 6, diagnosis of neoplasms, CCI > 4, and diagnosis of diseases of the digestive system. The ROC curve for the HABSI risk score was 0.703 ± 0.027 in predicting the outcome, (sensitivity 79%, specificity 51%, at optimal cut-off score). The overall hazard mortality risk was twofold higher in patients with HABSIs (hazard ratio: 2.319; 95% confidence interval: 1.871–2.875; p-value: <0.001). The overall 30-day survival rate was lower among patients with HABSIs (33%) vs. non-HABSI patients (62%). Conclusions: A group of main clinical features in subjects without suspect of infectious disease in the ED are associated with HABSIs. These features negatively impact survival rate during hospital stays. Full article

This article examines how Chinese scholars and institutions selected Western musicological works for translation into Chinese and how these choices shaped the formation of musicology as a modern discipline in mainland China from 1900 to 2025. Drawing on disciplinary translation history, it asks which musicological works were translated, who selected and translated them, under what historical and institutional conditions they circulated, and how they contributed to the intellectual development of Chinese musicology. On the basis of translated works, publication records, archival materials, and the secondary literature, the article identifies four historical stages: technical transplantation (1900–1949), planned transplantation (1949–1978), critical transformation (1978–2010), and two-way dialogue (2010–2025). Each stage was shaped by a different configuration of ideology, academic demand, market forces, and translator agency. The article argues that the Chinese translation of Western musicological scholarship was never a passive import of foreign theories. Rather, it was a historically situated process in which Chinese scholars, translators, publishers, and institutions identified, adapted, and reorganized foreign musicological knowledge in response to local academic needs. The findings contribute to knowledge translation studies by offering a diachronic, multi-agent account of translation selection and by explaining how these choices helped shape modern Chinese musicology as a discipline. As generative AI expands the technical frontiers of prediction, measurement, and design, a growing tension has emerged between algorithmic fluency and institutional trust. This conceptual article offers a narrative synthesis of recent work in learning analytics, educational data science, human–AI interaction, and AI governance to propose stewardship as a necessary fourth paradigm of educational data science. Stewardship represents the professional, epistemic, and institutional work of governing judgment in an environment where analytic systems are increasingly generative and persuasive. Rather than treating stewardship as a general ethics checklist, the article positions it as the governance of epistemic and pedagogical authority: who determines what counts as evidence, interpretation, and educational action when AI systems help produce those judgments. The synthesis suggests that while GenAI can support bounded analytic tasks, evidence for systemic educational transformation remains limited and uneven. The field’s primary challenge is therefore not technical performance alone, but the governance of interpretation, validation, delegation, and action. By centering provenance, uncertainty, accountable oversight, learner agency, and institutional learning, stewardship provides an actionable framework for anchoring analytic innovation in responsible educational improvement. This study examines the schooling experiences of transgender students in Malta within the broader historical and sociocultural influence of the Catholic religion, focusing on how religious discourse shapes processes of inclusion and exclusion. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with transgender students, parents, educators, and school administrators, the findings reveal that Catholic doctrine and its presence within school contexts contribute to the erasure of transgender identities from early childhood onward. In contrast to ecclesiastical narratives that frame transgender identity as a form of “gender ideology,” participants’ accounts demonstrate that social and medical transitions function as critical strategies for survival, well-being, and self-recognition. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative thematic analysis informed by a critical anticolonial framework, enabling an interrogation of how religious authority intersects with colonial legacies to regulate gender and embodiment. The analysis further highlights tensions between the Catholic religion and contemporary human rights and ethical frameworks, particularly in relation to inclusion. The study concludes that if the Catholic religion is to retain relevance within school contexts, it must undergo a substantive ethical reorientation toward inclusivity, recognizing transgender embodiment and agency. The seasonal distribution of microplastics, as a representative case, was examined in Mytilus galloprovincialis from a pilot farm in the Gulf of Naples (Italy). The influence of marine parameters on microplastic uptake rate was assessed. A destructive patented method was used, and two microplastic size classes (<10 µm; >10 µm) were defined. Estimated Daily Intakes were calculated for different age groups. Results showed a significant abundance of small microplastics (9683.92 ± 6911 vs. 41.85 ± 13.98). In mussels, the highest levels (19,738.13 ± 3406.04) were detected in summer, and the lowest in autumn (4145.56 ± 2364.93). Summer variations in seawater temperature, oxygen, and pH were significantly different from those in winter and spring. High exposure levels, mainly of microplastics < 10 µm, were observed in the elderly (318.08 ± 227.00), followed by adults (225.29 ± 160.78) and children (212.29 ± 151.50), with the lowest in teenagers (127.51 ± 91.00). Despite the high variability of factors influencing mussel filtration and microplastic uptake, the study provided data on the seasonal microplastic distribution pattern and a size-based screening exposure level. Results highlight the importance of geographic and seasonal conditions, and particle size in assessing microplastic exposure through farmed mussel consumption. Full article

This article explores the structural paradox of the byeong-gut (Korean shamanic healing ritual): why it adheres to the rigid and canonical format of the jaesu-gut (shamanic blessing ritual) instead of adopting a specialized clinical procedure. Critiquing the instrumental trap of previous scholarship that reduces shamanic healing to psychological comfort or social liberation, this study proposes a relational displacement model by integrating Roy Rappaport’s theory of ritual invariance with the relational ontologies of Bruno Latour and Tim Ingold. The article demonstrates that shamanic healing operates through a dual mechanism. First, at the non-discursive (material) level, the ritual functions as an ontological technology that objectifies and displaces individual suffering onto external surrogates. Second, at the discursive (linguistic) level, a meticulous analysis of the manse-baji (invocation chant) illustrates how the patient’s fragmented life is re-assembled into a meshwork of human and non-human agencies. Ultimately, this article argues that the byeong-gut transcends mere functional curing; it serves as a sophisticated knowledge system that re-maps the isolated ego onto a relational cosmology, transforming the Geertzian bafflement of suffering into an intelligible event within a shared and sacred cosmic order. This contribution examines the role of artificial intelligence technologies in the co-construction of social reality, with specific attention to AI-generated data as emergent agents of knowledge production. Building on perspectives from science and technology studies and recent debates on algomorphic sociology, the contribution conceptualizes generative AI systems not as research instruments, but as active participants in epistemic processes. The analysis argues that AI-generated data exhibit a performative character: they do not simply represent social phenomena but actively contribute to their stabilization, classification, and circulation. This performativity fosters a shift from researcher-centered interpretation toward hybrid configurations in which meaning emerges through human–machine assemblages. Through a theoretical synthesis of recent methodological and epistemological reflections, the contribution highlights a transition from anthropocentric models of knowledge production to post-anthropocentric, relational frameworks in which agency, cognition, and sense-making are distributed across sociotechnical networks. The contribution concludes by outlining the implications of this shift for the future of digital social research and also for reflexivity, methodological design, and the ethics of social research, advocating a critical and adaptive stance toward AI as a co-producer of knowledge rather than a subordinate analytical tool. Against the backdrop of the transition of new-type urbanization towards high-quality development, the triple contradictions of population agglomeration, land constraints, and housing supply-demand imbalance have become increasingly prominent. The conventional binary framework of human–land relations can no longer meet the requirements of coordinated development within human settlement systems, creating an urgent need to examine the multi-system interactions among population, land, and housing in order to resolve spatial mismatch. Taking Guangzhou as a case study, this research integrates 2020 population census data, land-use data from the European Space Agency (ESA), housing-price data from the Anjuke platform, and multi-source data on related influencing factors, and conducts a systematic empirical analysis by combining coupling coordination analysis, a relative development model, and the geographical detector. The findings reveal that the coupling coordination level of population, land and housing in Guangzhou exhibits a concentric, ring-shaped distribution pattern with central agglomeration and peripheral decline. The relative development among the three systems can be classified into matching types including the core-differentiated type, the peripheral-imbalanced type, and the surrounding-equilibrium type. With respect to influencing factors, all pairwise interactions are of the bi-factor enhancement type, and the driving mechanism displays a three-stage dynamic evolution. This study enriches research on human–land relations, provides precise guidance for optimizing spatial allocation and alleviating housing mismatch conflicts in Guangzhou, and offers transferable practical experience for comparable cities in China seeking to advance the high-quality development of new-type urbanization.
