This paper presents a numerical parametric study of a dynamic lumped-parameter model of a hoisting mechanism driven by a DC electric motor. The analysis focuses on two operating scenarios: hoisting with an initially tight rope and hoisting with an initially slack rope. The model considers the inertial, elastic, and damping characteristics of the mechanical system, as well as the motor’s dynamic behavior. Systematic simulations are used to evaluate the influence of key design parameters on the rope’s dynamic factor. Sensitivity analysis is carried out by varying each parameter within a ±20% range, and Monte Carlo simulations are employed to compute Pearson correlation coefficients and perform multiple linear regression. The results indicate that the slack rope scenario produces significantly higher peak dynamic loads than those observed in the tight rope scenario, emphasizing its importance for structural sizing and safety. The findings enhance our understanding of parameter influence and support more robust hoisting system design in transient conditions. Full article

Background: This study investigated syndesmotic stability after transection and the effects of stabilization using rigid and dynamic reconstruction techniques. Methods: Syndesmotic stability was analyzed using a six-degree-of-freedom robotic arm on 14 human specimens. Stability was analyzed in the neutral position and during dorsiflexion and plantar flexion using an external rotation stress test under an axial load of 200 Newtons. The examination was performed on intact and sequentially transected syndesmosis in the following order: (1) anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL); (2) interosseous ligament (IOL); and (3) posterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (PITFL). Then, reconstruction was performed using different syndesmotic screw techniques or a dynamic Suture Button system (Arthrex TightRope; n = 7). Results: A syndesmotic transection mainly caused sagittal instability of the fibula. While both static and dynamic reconstruction provided stabilization, screw fixation, particularly with two screws and a plate, demonstrated superior control of the fibular movement, especially in the sagittal and transverse planes, compared to one Suture Button. Conclusions: The results suggest that syndesmotic stabilization with one Suture Button may be insufficient for cases involving three-ligamentous injuries, whereas two Suture Buttons may offer comparable biomechanical stability to syndesmotic screws. Additionally, the study suggests that lateral radiographs may provide additional clinical value in assessing syndesmotic stability. Full article

Introduction: The anatomy of the distal tibiofibular joint (DTFJ) has been demonstrated to influence the radiological outcome of reduction with syndesmotic screw fixation in the course of ankle fracture treatment. The objective of this study was to describe the anatomy of the DTFJ and to analyze the effect of incisura anatomy on syndesmotic stabilization with suture button systems (SBS), also in the context of their flexible nature of fixation. Materials and Methods: Forty-four (21 females, 23 males) consecutive postoperative bilateral computed tomography scans after stabilization of the DTFJ by SBS in the course of operative treatment of unstable ankle fractures were retrospectively analyzed. The anatomy of the DTFJ was evaluated by examining the following parameters: depth of the tibial incisura (DI), rotation of the incisura (ROI), Nault talar dome angle (NTDA), Leporjärvi clear space (LCS), anterior tibiofibular distance (antTFD), and fibula engagement (FE). The side-to-side (Δ) of LCS, NTDA, and antTFD, which analyzed the reduction result, were correlated with DI, FE, ROI, and NTDA, as well as the transverse offset (TO), reflecting the flexible nature of fixation. Results: Patients with slight overtightening (ΔLCS > −1 mm) showed a fibula that protruded less into the incisura on the native side (smaller FE) compared to symmetrical reduced patients and to patients with slight diastasis (p < 0.05). There was no relationship between the parameters describing the anatomy of the incisura and parameters assessing the parameter of the “flexible nature of fixation” (rs < 0.300). Regarding the anatomical parameters, it was observed that there were inter-individual differences of more than 4 mm (p > 0.05). Conclusions: The considerable inter-individual anatomical variability of the DTFJ was confirmed. The morphological configuration of the incisura has no impact on the immediate radiological reduction result after SBS stabilization of the DTFG, as determined by CT. The extent of the flexible nature of fixation is also not affected by the morphology of the incisura. Stabilization of the DTFJ can be performed regardless of the anatomical configuration. Background/Objectives: Dislocation of the acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) is a common injury for which numerous operative fixation and reconstructive techniques have been described. This technique combines a coracoclavicular ligament (CC) repair with an acromioclavicular ligament (AC) and CC reconstruction with an additional ACJ internal brace to address both horizontal and vertical instability. Methods: The surgery is performed through a superior approach in the following sequence: (1) CC ligaments are repaired using a TightRope construct, (2) CC reconstruction is performed using a peroneus longus tendon allograft, (3) AC ligaments are repaired using an internal brace, and (4) AC reconstruction is performed with a second peroneus longus tendon allograft. The results of consecutive patients with grade IIIB, IV, and V AC joint dislocations were included. Results: Six patients with acute and six patients with chronic injuries were eligible for inclusion. The Constant–Murley Score improved significantly from 27.6 (8.0–56.5) to 61.5 (42.0–92.0) (p = 0.006 paired t-test) at 12 months of follow-up. There was one complication (frozen shoulder) from which the patient recovered spontaneously; no other complications were observed with this technique. The coracoclavicular distance (CCD) was reduced from 18.7 mm (13.0–24.0) to 10.0 mm (6.0–16.0, p < 0.001) and 10.5 mm (8.0–14.0, p = 0.002) at 12 weeks and 12 months, respectively. Conclusions: This study describes a new technique to treat acute and chronic Rockwood stage IIIB–V ACJ dislocations with promising short-term clinical and radiological results. The results suggest that the combined repair and reconstruction of the AC and CC ligaments is a safe procedure with low complication risk in experienced hands. Addressing the vertical and horizontal stability in ACJ dislocation is key to achieving optimal long-term results. Further, follow-up is required to investigate the long-term outcomes. Full article

Purpose: Accurate and precise navigation in space and postural stability rely on the central integration of multisensory input (vestibular, proprioceptive, visual), weighted according to its reliability, to continuously update the internal estimate of the direction of gravity. In this study, we examined both peripheral and central vestibular functions in a world-renowned 53-year-old male tightrope walker and investigated the extent to which his exceptional performance was reflected in our findings. Methods: Comprehensive assessments were conducted, including semicircular canal function tests (caloric irrigation, rotatory-chair testing, video head impulse testing of all six canals, dynamic visual acuity) and otolith function evaluations (subjective visual vertical, fundus photography, ocular/cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials [oVEMPs/cVEMPs]). Additionally, static and dynamic posturography, as well as video-oculography (smooth-pursuit eye movements, saccades, nystagmus testing), were performed. The participant’s results were compared to established normative values. High-resolution diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (DT-MRI) was utilized to assess motor tract integrity. Results: Semicircular canal testing revealed normal results except for a slightly reduced response to right-sided caloric irrigation (26% asymmetry ratio; cut-off = 25%). Otolith testing, however, showed marked asymmetry in oVEMP amplitudes, confirmed with two devices (37% and 53% weaker on the left side; cut-off = 30%). Bone-conducted cVEMP amplitudes were mildly reduced bilaterally. Posturography, video-oculography, and subjective visual vertical testing were all within normal ranges. Diffusion tensor MRI revealed no structural abnormalities correlating with the observed functional asymmetry. Conclusions: This professional tightrope walker’s exceptional balance skills contrast starkly with significant peripheral vestibular (otolithic) deficits, while MR imaging, including diffusion tensor imaging, remained normal. These findings highlight the critical role of central computational mechanisms in optimizing multisensory input signals and fully compensating for vestibular asymmetries in this unique case. This paper recounts the author’s reluctant journey of translating Matthew Fuller and Eyal Weizman’s Investigative Aesthetics: Conflicts and Commons in the Politics of Truth into Japanese, a process that turned out to be a mix of philosophical tightrope walking and comedic pratfalls. Along the way, we meet Baumgarten, the original translator who coined the aesthetica nomenclature, Kant, who insists that there can be no such thing as a science of sensibility, and a parade of Japanese translators who took great artistic liberties in rendering an alien term into a complicated language formed by three layers of different writing systems. The author reflects on his coining of a new translation for “aesthetics” in Japanese—Kansei-Jutsu (“Sensibility-Art”)—a term that baffled publishers, thrilled a few cultural studies scholars, and may have earned a side-eye from beauty salons already using “estetikusu” for facials. The translation saga spirals into debates about what “aesthetics” even means, culminating in a bittersweet realisation: translation is less about getting it right and more about sparking delightful, sometimes ridiculous, new ways of thinking. By the end, aesthetics re-emerges as a celebration of difference, proving that even conflicts can create a strange and wonderful commons when approached with an openness to diverse sensibilities. Multi-cable cooperative control is essential for cable-driven space manipulators to achieve in-orbit services such as fault spacecraft maintenance, fuel injection, on-orbit assembly, and orbital garbage removal. To prevent the cables from becoming slack or excessively tight, the force in each cable must be distributed appropriately. The force distribution among different cables requires real-time adjustments; otherwise, the system may become unstable. This paper proposes a compliance control method based on the force–position hybrid drive mode to address the challenges of multi-cable cooperative control. Firstly, the mapping relationship between the cable space and the joint space of the cable-driven space manipulator is established. Then, the force mapping relationship for this structure is derived. The control scheme categorizes the cables into two types: active-side cables and antagonistic-side cables. Position control and force control are implemented separately, significantly reducing the computational requirements and enhancing the overall performance of the control system. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated through simulations and compared with the PID control method. When tracking the same trajectory, the proposed method reduces the tracking error by 49.14% and the maximum force by 58.58% compared to the PID control method, effectively addressing the problem of force distribution in multi-rope coordinated control. This article, Queering Militarism in Israeli Photography, examines Adi Nes’s Soldiers series, a body of work that interrogates the intersections of queerness, militarism, and nationalism within Israeli society. By employing a distinctive “military circus” aesthetic, Nes challenges the rigid heteronormative and hyper-masculine archetypes embedded in Israeli military identity. His staged photographs depict soldiers in circus-inspired performative poses, blending military discipline with elements of the carnivalesque to subvert conventional representations of military masculinity. This approach creates spaces where queerness, vulnerability, and fluid identity defy the rigid confines of nationalist narratives. Using queer studies frameworks, performance theory, and postcolonial critique, this article analyzes Nes’s depiction of soldiers as both military subjects and circus performers, examining how these representations disrupt the “naturalness” of gender, power, and identity within the Israeli national ethos. Through a close reading of key images—such as the fire-breathing soldier, the acrobat on a tightrope, and the strongman figure—this article argues that Nes critiques homonationalism and exposes the co-optation of LGBTQ+ identities into militaristic frameworks. His images juxtapose exaggerated masculinity with homoerotic and introspective vulnerability, positioning the queer body as both a participant in and a subverter of the national narrative. Drawing on contemporary queer theory—including José Esteban Muñoz’s concept of “disidentification”, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick’s theories of queer shame and performativity, and perspectives on temporality, failure, and counterpublics following Elizabeth Freeman, Jack Halberstam, Michael Warner, and Sara Ahmed—this article frames queerness as an active site of resistance and creative transformation within the Israeli military complex. The analysis reveals how Nes’s work disrupts Zionist masculinities and traditional militaristic structures through a hybrid aesthetic of military and circus life. By reimagining Israeli identity as an inclusive, multi-dimensional construct, Nes expands queer possibilities beyond heteronormative confines and homonationalist alignments. This merging of critical queer perspectives—from the destabilizing of discipline and shame to the public visibility of non-normative bodies—posits that queer identities can permeate and reshape state power itself, challenging not only the norms of militaristic nationalism but also the boundaries of Israeli selfhood. Background: The arthroscopically assisted stabilization of AC joint dislocations with a suture button system is an established procedure that is widely and successfully used in everyday practice. The main advantages of this one-step method are the minimally invasive procedure and the anatomical reconstruction of the ruptured coracoclavicular ligaments with a permanent implant. With this technical note study, for the first time, the new method of navigated suture button implantation in everyday clinical practice is described with the future goal of further reducing invasiveness and increasing precision. Materials and Methods: The surgical technique is explained using precise descriptions and illustrations, photos, X-rays, and 3D reconstructions based on clinical cases. The step-by-step system setup and patient positioning, AC joint reduction and retention, 3D scan and drill tunnel planning, stab incision and Kirschner wire navigation, and cannulated drilling and implant positioning, as well as closure and documentation are described in detail. Results: The standard coracoclavicular stabilization of AC joint dislocations with the 3D C-arm navigated suture button method is described in detail. Furthermore, the feasibility of an additive horizontal acromioclavicular suture cerclage, the implantation of an additional coracoclavicular suture button system, and the single-stage cannulated screw fixation of non-displaced fractures is demonstrated. Conclusion: The navigated suture button method aims to be simple, safe, minimally invasive, and precise. Prospective clinical studies with a long follow-up should be carried out to determine the clinical and radiological outcome in comparison with current methods. Full article

Radial pulse diagnosis is the most common method to examine the human health state in Traditional East Asian Medicine (TEAM). A cold stress-related suboptimal health state (subhealth) is often undetectable during routine medical examinations, however, it can be detected through the palpation of specific pulse waves, particularly a ‘tight pulse’, in TEAM. Therefore, this study examined a correlation between ‘tight pulse’ and vascular changes in the radial artery (RA) induced by a cold pressor trial (CPT). Twenty healthy subjects underwent sequentially control trial and CPT with room-temperature and ice-cold water, respectively, on the right forearm. The radial pulse and vascular changes were then examined on the left arm. The radial pulse scores for frequencies of ‘tight pulse’ with strong arterial tension increased after the CPT compared with the control trial. The pulse scores were reversely correlated with the RA thickness and volumes in ultrasonography, but not with changes in the systolic/diastolic blood pressure. The RA thickness-based vascular surface and three-dimensional images visualized a ‘tight pulse’ showing the vasoconstriction and bumpy-/rope-shaped vascular changes in the radial pulse diagnostic region after the CPT. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential integration of clinical radial pulse diagnosis with ultrasonography for cold-related subhealth. Full article

Despite being a crucial source of funding for the government, tax revenue collection in Indonesia has yet to reach its ideal and satisfying level for the economy. Therefore, this study explores the impact of executive incentives, foreign ownership, and transfer pricing on tax avoidance. The conventional banks of Indonesia that were listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) between 2015 and 2019 are the subject of this study. This study employed a purposive selection technique, with a final sample of 17 banks chosen after screening to ensure they met the requirements of having foreign ownership and not having suffered losses during the study year. The results of this study show that while CEO incentives harm tax avoidance, foreign ownership has a beneficial effect. Furthermore, tax avoidance is not significantly impacted by transfer pricing. The findings of this investigation open the door for accountable authorities in the economy. Full article

Appropriate procedure selection is necessary for a better prognosis. Several surgical methods have recently been introduced. Here, we present three distinct surgical techniques for treating ligamentous Lisfranc employing flexible fixation. First is the “Single Tightrope procedure”, which involves reduction and fixation between the second metatarsal base and the medial cuneiform via making a bone tunnel and inserting Tightrope. Second is the “Dual Tightrope Technique”, which is similar to the “Single Tightrope technique”, with additional fixation of an intercuneiform joint using one MiniLok Quick Anchor Plus. Last but not least, the “internal brace approach” uses the SwiveLock anchor, particularly when intercueniform instability is seen. Each approach has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of surgical complexity and stability. These flexible fixation methods, on the other hand, are more physiologic and have the potential to lessen the difficulties that have been linked to the use of conventional screws in the past. Background: Syndesmotic injuries are common lesions associated with ankle fractures. Static and dynamic fixation are frequently used in syndesmotic injury-associated ankle fractures. The purpose of this study is to compare short- and mid-term quality of life, clinical outcomes, and gait after static stabilization with a trans-syndesmotic screw or dynamic stabilization with a suture button device. Methods: Here, 230 patients were enrolled in a retrospective observational study. They were divided in two groups according to the fixation procedure (Arthrex TightRope®, Munich, Germany) synthesis vs. osteosynthesis with a 3.5 mm trans-syndesmotic tricortical screw). They then underwent clinical assessment using the American Foot and Ankle Score (AOFAS) at 1, 2, 6, 12, and 24 months after surgery. Quality of life was assessed according to the EuroQol-5 Dimension (EQ-5D) at 2 and 24 months after surgery in the follow-up; gait analysis was performed 2 and 24 months postoperatively. Results: Significant differences were found at a two-month follow-up according to the AOFAS (p = 0.0001) and EQ-5D (p = 0.0208) scores. No differences were noted in the other follow-ups (p > 0.05) or gait analysis. Conclusion: The dynamic and static fixation of syndesmotic injuries in ankle fracture are both efficacious and valid procedures for avoiding ankle instability. The suture button device was comparable to the screw fixation according to functional outcomes and gait analysis. Full article

The chaotic adaptation to hybrid work during the COVID-19 pandemic has meant that workers still do not know how professional dynamics function correctly in this new context. In this paper, we focus on new issues that have arisen in this era of hybrid work, with the aim of improving performance, conciliation, and well-being in the specific professional environments of universities and research institutes. We will show the results from a non-representative survey comprising 451 scientists. Aspects such as management and leadership over their work, the purpose to achieve something innovative in their work, and promoting well-being in their work spaces and co-workers, have been observed and identified in the survey. The figure of a leader emerges as someone who is communicative, collaborative, and that helps colleagues and their professional development. We suggest that a tightrope walker leader, that is, one who knows how to strike a balance between individual needs and collective interests, could be the key to ensuring the well-being of scientists. Background: Acromioclavicular (AC) dislocation, one of the most common shoulder joint injuries, can be treated by several surgical methods. However, there are still few records about the treatment quality. This study aims to describe the outcomes of three surgical methods for acromioclavicular dislocation treatment at Viet Duc University Hospital, Vietnam. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 80 patients diagnosed with AC. We retrospectively collected data in the medical records and re-examined the patients. Results: There was no difference between the three groups of surgical approaches relating to the patient’s characteristics, except for the time from the accident to hospital admission. The median length of stay after surgery was highest in the Hook plate group (median (IQR) = 5(2) days), while it was lowest in the K-wire group (median (IQR) = 3(1) days) (p < 0.05). There is statistical significance in the difference of coracoclavicular distance between pre and post-operation in all three surgical method groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: All of the methods—Hook plate, K-wire, and TightRope—were associated with optimistic outcomes and restored initial anatomy. While the three surgical methods are both safe and effective, the K-wire method is associated with a shorter length of stay and might be economical. Full article
