There have been significant breakthroughs in developing highly functional myoelectric prostheses, yet individuals who have experienced upper-limb loss consistently report low levels of satisfaction when performing daily tasks while using myoelectric prostheses. This research aims to evaluate the change in the user’s experience after completing a training program in which tasks are designed to facilitate adaptation to the myoelectric arm in performing the activities of daily living. One participant with a left transradial limb difference was recruited for this project. The user’s experience was evaluated by comparing task completion time, trunk and shoulder angles, object control, movement smoothness, vertical ground reaction forces, the center of pressure location, and selected muscle activation of her affected arm between baseline and post-training. The data collection was performed through a motion capture system, a pressure mat, and wireless EMG modules. While indications of potential improvements in balance, muscle efficiency, and functionality were present, the data were inconclusive as to the effectiveness of the training procedure. One outcome measure that showed improvement across most tasks was the task completion time, which, on average, for the targeted Box and Block Test (tBBT) task was reduced by 24.0 s, box lifting by 1.6 s, bottle pouring by 9.0 s, and the pulley task by 8.4 s. This project serves as part of a larger multi-visit study evaluating the effects of home-based functional training on facilitating users’ adaptation to the myoelectric arm. Full article

Seven new coordination networks, [Fe(tbbt)3](BF4)2 (1), [Co(tbbt)3](BF4)2 (2), [Fe(tbbt)3](ClO4)2 (3), [Co(tbbt)3](ClO4)2 (4), [Fe(NCS)2(tbbt)2] (5), [Co(NCS)2(tbbt)2] (6), and [Fe(H2O)2(tbbt)2]Br2·2H2O (7), were synthesized with the linker 1,1’-(trans-2-butene-1,4-diyl)bis-1,2,4-triazole (tbbt) and structurally investigated. The structure of complexes 14 is composed of three interpenetrating, symmetry-related 3D networks. Each individual 3D network forms a primitive, nearly cubic lattice (pcu) with BF4 or ClO4 anions present in the interstitial spaces. The structure of compounds 5 and 6 is composed of two-dimensional sql layers, which are parallel to each other in the AB stacking type. These layers are interpenetrated by one-dimensional chains, both having the same formula unit, [M(NCS)2(tbbt)2] (M = Fe, Co). The structure of compound 7 consists of parallel, two-dimensional sql layers in the ABCD stacking type. The interpenetration in 16 is not controlled by π–π-interactions between the triazole rings or C=C bonds, as could have been expected, but by (triazole)C-H⋯F4B, C-H⋯O4Cl, and C-H⋯SCN anion hydrogen bonds, which suggests a template effect of the respective non-coordinated or coordinated anion for the interpenetration. In 7, the (triazole)C-H⋯Br anion interactions are supplemented by O-H⋯O and O-H⋯Br hydrogen bonds involving the aqua ligand and crystal water molecules. It is evident that the coordinated and non-coordinated anions play an essential role in the formation of the networks and guide the interpenetration. All iron(II) coordination networks are colorless, off-white to yellow-orange, and have the metal ions in the high-spin state down to 77 K. Compound 5 stays in the high spin state even at temperatures down to 10 K. Full article

Sepsis-induced acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication in critically ill patients, often resulting in high rates of morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of casein kinase 2 alpha (CK2α) inhibition in ameliorating ischemia–reperfusion-induced AKI. In this study, our aim was to investigate the potential of the selective CK2α inhibitor, 4,5,6,7-tetrabromobenzotriazole (TBBt), in the context of sepsis-induced AKI. To assess this, we initially confirmed an upregulation of CK2α expression following a cecum ligation and puncture (CLP) procedure in mice. Subsequently, TBBt was administered to a group of mice prior to CLP, and their outcomes were compared to those of sham mice. The results revealed that, following CLP, the mice exhibited typical sepsis-associated patterns of AKI, characterized by reduced renal function (evidenced by elevated blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels), renal damage, and inflammation (indicated by increased tubular injury score, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and apoptosis index). However, mice treated with TBBt demonstrated fewer of these changes, and their renal function and architecture remained comparable to that of the sham mice. The anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic properties of TBBt are believed to be associated with the inactivation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) signaling pathways. In conclusion, these findings suggest that inhibiting CK2α could be a promising therapeutic strategy for treating sepsis-induced AKI. Full article

The pure trifunctional glycidyl monomer from phloroglucinol (3EPO-Ph) was synthesized and used as feedstock in the preparation of novel bio-based thermosets by thiol-epoxy curing. The monomer was crosslinked with different commercially available thiols: tetrafunctional thiol (PETMP), trifunctional thiol (TTMP) and an aromatic dithiol (TBBT) as curing agents in the presence of a base. As catalyst, two different commercial catalysts: LC-80 and 4-(N,N-dimethylamino) pyridine (DMAP) and a synthetic catalyst, imidazolium tetraphenylborate (base generator, BG) were employed. The curing of the reactive mixtures was studied by using DSC and the obtained materials by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The results revealed that only the formulations catalyzed by BG showed a latent character. Already prepared thermosetting materials showed excellent thermal, thermomechanical and mechanical properties, with a high transparency. In addition to that, when compared with the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA)/PETMP material, the thermosets prepared from the triglycidyl derivative of phloroglucinol have better final characteristics and therefore this derivative can be considered as a partial or total renewable substitute of DGEBA in technological applications. 4,5,6,7-Tetrabromo-1H-benzotriazole (TBBT) is still considered a reference inhibitor of casein kinase II (CK2), a valuable target for anticancer therapy, even though the poor solubility in water of this active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) has prevented its implementation in therapy. We decided to explore the interactions preferentially formed by TBBT in crystalline solids in order to obtain information helpful for the development of new TBBT cocrystals possibly endowed with improved bioavailability. In this paper, we describe the synthesis and the structural characterization of the TBBT methanol solvate and of the TBBT salt with N,N,N’,N’-tetramethylethylenediamine. It is shown that TBBT can give rise to several competing interactions. This API is clearly a good halogen bond (XB) donor, with bromine atoms adjacent to the triazole ring possibly better donors than the two others. TBBT is also a good hydrogen bond (HB) donor, with the triazole hydrogen forming an HB with the acceptor or being transferred to it. Interestingly, one of the triazole nitrogens was proven to be able to work as a hydrogen bond acceptor. Full article
