The Effects of the Red River Jig on the Wholistic Health of Adults in Saskatchewan

The Red River Jig is a traditional Métis dance practiced among Indigenous and non-Indigenous Peoples. While exercise improves physical health and fitness, the impacts of cultural dances on wholistic health are less clear. This study aimed to investigate the psychosocial (cultural and mental), social, physical function, and physical fitness benefits of a Red River Jig intervention. In partnership with Li Toneur Nimiyitoohk Métis Dance Group, Indigenous and non-Indigenous adults (N = 40, 39 ± 15 years, 32 females) completed an 8-week Red River Jig intervention. Social support, cultural identity, memory, and mental wellbeing questionnaires, seated blood pressure and heart rate, weight, pulse-wave velocity, heart rate variability, baroreceptor sensitivity, jump height, sit-and-reach flexibility, one-leg and tandem balance, and six-minute walk test were assessed pre- and post-intervention. Community, family, and friend support scores, six-minute walk distance (553.0 ± 88.7 m vs. 602.2 ± 138.6 m, p = 0.002), jump, leg power, and systolic blood pressure low-to-high-frequency ratio increased after the intervention. Ethnic identity remained the same while affirmation and belonging declined, leading to declines in overall cultural identity, as learning about Métis culture through the Red River Jig may highlight gaps in cultural knowledge. Seated systolic blood pressure (116.5 ± 7.3 mmHg vs. 112.5 ± 10.7 mmHg, p = 0.01) and lower peripheral pulse-wave velocity (10.0 ± 2.0 m·s−1 vs. 9.4 ± 1.9 m·s−1, p = 0.04) decreased after the intervention. Red River Jig dance training can improve social support, physical function, and physical fitness for Indigenous and non-Indigenous adults. Full article

Physical Fitness, Experiential Avoidance, and Psychological Inflexibility Among Adolescents: Results from the EHDLA Study

Background/Introduction: Psychological inflexibility, which includes experiential avoidance, is a transdiagnostic process associated with multiple mental health issues in adolescence. Physical fitness (PF) has shown benefits for mental well-being, yet its specific relationship with psychological inflexibility remains understudied, particularly among youth. Objectives: To examine the association between components of PF and psychological inflexibility, measured by the Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II), in a representative sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted using data from 631 adolescents (aged 12–17) participating in the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) study. PF was assessed by the Assessing the Levels of PHysical Activity and Fitness (ALPHA-Fit) Test Battery (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular strength, agility, and flexibility). Psychological inflexibility was measured using the AAQ-II. Generalized linear models (GLMs) were used to evaluate associations, adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, socioeconomic status, physical activity, sedentary behavior, sleep duration, and energy intake. Results: Unadjusted analyses showed weak but significant associations between psychological inflexibility and performance in the 20 m shuttle run test (p = 0.002), the 4 × 10 shuttle run test (p = 0.005), and the sit-and-reach test (p < 0.001). However, after adjusting for covariates, none of the PF components maintained a statistically significant association with the AAQ-II scores. Conclusions: In this adolescent sample, PF components were not independently associated with psychological inflexibility after adjustment for key confounders. These findings suggest that, while PF may contribute to general well-being, it is not a primary determinant of psychological inflexibility. Further longitudinal and intervention studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms linking physical and psychological health in youth. Full article

Sea ice parameters are crucial for polar ship design. During China’s 39th Antarctic Scientific Expedition, ice condition from the entire navigation process of the research vessel Xuelong 2 was recorded using shipborne cameras. To obtain sea ice parameters, two deep learning models, Ice-Deeplab and U-Net, were employed to automatically obtain sea ice concentration (SIC) and sea ice thickness (SIT), providing high-frequency data at 5-min intervals. During the observation period, ice navigation accounted for 32 days, constituting less than 20% of the total 163 voyage days. Notably, 63% of the navigation was in ice fields with less than 10% concentration, while only 18.9% occurred in packed ice (concentration > 90%) or level ice regions. SIT ranges from 100 cm to 234 cm and follows a normal distribution. The results demonstrate that, to achieve enhanced navigation efficiency and fulfill expedition objectives, the research vessel substantially reduced duration in high-concentration ice areas. Additionally, the results of SIC extracted from shipborne camera images were compared with the data from the Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) satellite remote sensing. In summary, the sea ice parameter data obtained from shipborne camera images offer high spatial and temporal resolution, making them more suitable for engineering applications in establishing sea ice environmental parameters. Background/Objectives: Aging is associated with a gradual decline in physical capabilities, often leading to impaired balance and reduced functional status, which are major contributors to falls in older adults. Although many studies have assessed these variables independently, a limited amount of research has explored the direct relationship between balance and functional status in a healthy geriatric population. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between balance and functional capacity and to assess the influence of demographic factors such as age, comorbidities, smoking status, and history of falls. Methods: A sample of community-dwelling older adults (19 women, 16 men) (n = 35), aged 60 years and above (M = 78 years; SD = 9.23) from Sparta, Greece, took part in the present study. Participants were assessed using three validated tools: (a) the Five Times Sit-to-Stand test, (b) the Timed Up-and-Go test, and (c) the Berg Balance Scale. Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient was used for statistical analysis (α = 0.05). Results: Age was positively correlated with poorer performance in the Five Times Sit-to-Stand (r = 0.40; p < 0.01) and the Timed Up-and-Go test (r = 0.47; p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with Berg Balance Scale scores (r = −0.51; p < 0.01). Comorbidities and smoking were also associated with the Berg Balance Scale. A strong negative correlation was observed between balance and the other two functional tests (Five Times Sit-to-Stand: r = −0.51; Timed Up-and-Go: r = −0.66; both p < 0.01). Conclusions: The findings highlight the importance of evaluating both balance and functional capacity in older adults as interrelated factors that can significantly influence quality of life and fall risk. Future research with larger and more diverse populations is recommended to confirm the present findings and to use exercise programs to prevent falls in the geriatric population. Full article

Background: Seiza, a traditional sitting posture requiring deep ankle plantarflexion and knee flexion, often becomes difficult after ankle fracture surgery because of restricted mobility. Increased stiffness of the tibialis anterior (TA) muscle, particularly in its deep and superficial fibres, may limit plantarflexion and affect functional recovery. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between TA muscle stiffness, assessed using shear wave elastography (SWE), and the ability to assume the seiza posture after ankle fracture surgery. We also sought to determine whether the stiffness in the deep or superficial TA fibres was more strongly correlated with seiza ability. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 38 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for ankle fractures were evaluated 3 months postoperatively. Seiza ability was assessed using the ankle plantarflexion angle and heel–buttock distance. The shear moduli of the superficial and deep TA fibres were measured using SWE. Ankle range of motion, muscle strength, and self-reported seiza pain were also measured. Multiple linear regression was used to identify the predictors of seiza performance. Results: The shear moduli of both deep (β = −0.454, p < 0.001) and superficial (β = −0.339, p = 0.017) TA fibres independently predicted ankle plantarflexion angle during seiza (adjusted R2, 0.624). Pain during seiza was significantly associated with reduced plantarflexion, whereas muscle strength was not a significant predictor. Conclusions: TA muscle stiffness, especially in the deep fibres, was significantly associated with limited postoperative seiza performance. Targeted interventions that reduce deep TA stiffness may enhance functional outcomes. Full article

Background and Objectives: Functional capacity assessment is essential in bariatric surgery candidates, but the Six-Minute Walk Test (6MWT) may be limited by fatigue, joint pain, and spatial constraints in individuals with severe obesity. Shorter tests such as the Two-Minute Walk Test (2MWT), Three-Minute Walk Test (3MWT), and One-Minute Sit-to-Stand Test (1MSTS) have been proposed as alternatives, yet comparative data in this population remain scarce. We aimed to evaluate the validity, reliability, and clinical utility of the 2MWT, 3MWT, and 1MSTS as substitutes for the 6MWT in patients preparing for bariatric surgery. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 142 obese adults (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) underwent standardized 2MWT, 3MWT, 6MWT, and 1MSTS protocols. Correlation, linear regression, test–retest reliability (ICC), and ROC analyses were used to determine each test’s correlation and discriminative accuracy for impaired exercise tolerance (6MWT < 450 m). Results: The 3MWT showed the strongest correlation with the 6MWT (r = 0.930) and the highest explained variance (R2 = 0.865), especially in individuals with BMI > 50. It also exhibited excellent reliability (ICC > 0.9) and a strong ROC profile (AUC = 0.931; 212 m cut-off). The 2MWT demonstrated acceptable concurrent validity but slightly lower agreement. The 1MSTS showed weak and inconsistent associations with 6MWT performance, suggesting limited value in assessing aerobic capacity in this population. Conclusions: The 3MWT appears to be a valid, reliable, and clinically practical alternative to the 6MWT in individuals with severe obesity. The 2MWT may be used when time or patient tolerance is limited. The 1MSTS, while safe and simple, may reflect strength and coordination more than aerobic capacity, limiting its utility in this context. Full article

Background/Objectives: Obesity in adolescence is associated with a deterioration in cognitive functions, with significant implications for psychophysical well-being and academic performance. Recent studies highlight the importance of integrated interventions that combine nutrition education and physical activity to promote the overall health of students. The present study aims to evaluate the efficacy of an integrated intervention based on nutritional education and conscious body movement in improving cognitive functions, perceived well-being and nutritional knowledge in lower secondary school students with indicators of overweight and obesity. Methods: A quasi-experimental design with randomization at the class level was adopted, involving 60 students divided into an experimental group and control group. The intervention was divided into twelve weeks of activities, divided between nutritional education modules and physical activity courses. Standardized tests for the assessment of cognitive functions (Digit Span Forward, Digit Span Backward, Stroop Test, Trail Making Test B), motor tests (6-Minute Walk Test, Sit and Reach Test) and a food knowledge questionnaire were administered before and after the intervention. Results: The experimental group showed significant improvements compared to the control group in all cognitive, motor, and nutritional knowledge measures, indicating the effectiveness of the integrated intervention in promoting cognitive and physical well-being. Conclusions: The findings support the role of school as a generative environment of integrated well-being, suggesting the need to develop and implement curricular programs that integrate nutrition education and physical activity to counteract the negative effects of obesity on cognitive function in adolescents. Drosophila suzukii is an invasive pest of many fruit crops worldwide. Employing the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) could mitigate D. suzukii population growth and crop damage. This study evaluated the efficacy of SIT on commercial fruit, by (1) validating the quality of irradiated sterile males (male mating competitiveness, courtship, and flight performance) in the laboratory, and (2) assessing population suppression and fruit damage reduction in commercial raspberry fields. Treatment with SIT was compared to the grower’s standard chemical insecticide program throughout the season. The principal metrics of efficacy were trap counts of wild adult female D. suzukii in crops and larvae per fruit during harvesting. These metrics together with monitoring of border areas allowed targeting of high-pressure areas with higher releases of sterile males, to maximise efficacy for a given release number. The sterile male D. suzukii were as competitive as their fertile non-irradiated counterparts in laboratory mating competitiveness and flight performance studies while fertility egg-to-pupae recovery was reduced by 99%. In commercial raspberry crops, season-long releases of sterile males significantly suppressed the wild D. suzukii population, compared to the grower standard control strategy; with up to 89% reduction in wild female D. suzukii and 80% decrease in numbers of larvae per harvested fruit. Additionally, relative fruit waste (i.e., percentage of harvested fruits rejected for sale) at harvest was reduced for early, mid and late harvest crops, by up to 58% compared to the grower standard control. SIT has the potential to provide an effective and sustainable strategy for managing D. suzukii in raspberries, increasing marketable yield by reducing adult populations, fruit damage and waste fruit. SIT could therefore serve as a valuable tool for integrated pest management practices in berry production systems. Full article

Mental and Physical Health of Chinese College Students After Shanghai Lockdown: An Exploratory Study

The mental and physical health of college students, especially in urban environments like Shanghai, is crucial given the high academic and urban stressors, which were intensified by the COVID-19 lockdown. Prior research has shown gender differences in health impacts during public health crises, with females often more vulnerable to mental health issues. Objective: This study aimed to comprehensively assess the physical and psychological health of Chinese college students post-lockdown, focusing on the relationship between stress, anxiety, depression, sleep patterns, and physical health, with a particular emphasis on gender differences. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study involving 116 students in Shanghai, utilizing psychological scales (HAMA, IPAQ, PSQI, SDS, FS 14, PSS, SF-36) and physical fitness tests (resting heart rate, blood pressure, hand grip, forced vital capacity, standing long jump, sit-and-reach, one-minute sit-up test and the one-minute squat test, single-leg stand test with eyes closed), to analyze health and behavior during the pandemic lockdown. All students have undergone the same life habits during the pandemic. Results: The HAMA scores indicated no significant levels of physical or mental anxiety. The PSS results (42.45 ± 8.93) reflected a high overall stress level. Furthermore, the PSQI scores (5.4 ± 2.91) suggested that the participants experienced mild insomnia. The IPAQ scores indicated higher levels of job-related activity (1261.49 ± 2144.58), transportation activity (1253.65 ± 987.57), walking intensity (1580.78 ± 1412.20), and moderate-intensity activity (1353.03 ± 1675.27) among college students following the lockdown. Hand grip strength (right) (p = 0.001), sit-and-reach test (p = 0.001), standing long jump (p = 0.001), and HAMA total score (p = 0.033) showed significant differences between males and females. Three principal components were identified in males: HAMA, FS14, and PSQI, explaining a total variance of 70.473%. Similarly, three principal components were extracted in females: HAMA, PSQI, and FS14, explaining a total variance of 69.100%. Conclusions: Our study underscores the complex interplay between physical activity (PA), mental health, and quality of life, emphasizing the need for gender-specific interventions. The persistent high stress, poor sleep quality, and reduced PA levels call for a reorganized teaching schedule to enhance student well-being without increasing academic pressure. Full article

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disorder affecting the central nervous system that significantly impairs postural control and functional abilities. Robotic-assisted gait training mitigates this functional deterioration. This preliminary study aims to investigate the effects of a four-week gait training with the ExoAtlet II exoskeleton on static balance control and functional mobility in five individuals with MS (Expanded Disability Status Scale ≤ 2.5). Before and after the training, they were assessed in quiet standing under Eyes Open (EO) and Eyes Closed (EC) conditions and with the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test. Center of Pressure (CoP) Sway Area, Antero–Posterior (AP) and Medio–Lateral (ML) CoP displacement, Stay Time, and Total Instability Duration were computed. TUG test Total Duration, sit-to-stand, stand-to-sit, and linear walking phase duration were analyzed. To establish target reference values for rehabilitation advancement, the same evaluations were performed on a matched healthy cohort. After the training, an improvement in static balance with EO was observed towards HS values (reduced Sway Area, AP and ML CoP displacement, and Total Instability Duration and increased Stay Time). Enhancements under EC condition were less marked. TUG test performance improved, particularly in the stand-to-sit phase. These preliminary findings suggest functional benefits of exoskeleton gait training for individuals with MS. Full article

Korea has a high population density, considering the size of its territory. Therefore, the importance of convenient and comfortable apartment buildings and high-rise residential–commercial complex buildings has been rising. In addition, because of the improvement in the standard of living along with continuous national economic growth, the interest in well-being and the expectation of a quiet life with a comfortable and pleasant residential environment have also been increasing. However, Koreans have a lifestyle involving sitting on the floor, so floor impact noise has been occurring more and more frequently. Because of this, neighborly disputes have been a serious social problem. And lately, damage and disputes from noise between floors have been increasing much more. The present work, therefore, used waste tire chips as a resilient material for reducing floor impact noise in order to recycle waste tires effectively. Also, a compounded resilient material, which combines EPS (expanded polystyrene), a flat resilient material on the upper part, with waste tire chips for the lower part, was developed. After constructing waste tire chips at a standardized test building, experiments with both light-weight and heavy-weight floor impact noise were performed. The tests confirmed that waste tire chips, when used as a resilient material, can effectively reduce both light-weight and heavy-weight floor impact noise. Full article

Background: This study examines balance, flexibility and self-esteem among healthy individuals who engage in surfing compared to those who do not surf. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted with 124 participants divided into the following groups: Group 1: Surfers n = 42; Group 2: individuals performing over 3 h of physical activity per week n = 43; and Group 3: individuals performing fewer than 3 h of physical activity per week n = 39. To assess balance, the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and the Flamenco Test (FBT) were used, the sit-and-reach test (SRT) was used to measure hamstring extensibility, the Rosenberg Scale was used to measure self-esteem, and the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to measure physical activity levels. Results: Regarding descriptive characteristics, G1 participants were significant older than those of G2 and G3 (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001, respectively). Moreover, there was a higher proportion of females in G3 than in G1 and G2 (p < 0.05). The results revealed significant differences in balance between the surfers and those engaging in fewer than 3 h of activity per week (p < 0.05). G1 obtained significantly higher results in SEBT-left leg than G2 and G3 (p < 0.001) and higher result in SEBT-right leg and FBT than G3 (p < 0.05) but no significant differences in self-esteem were found. Significant differences in flexibility were observed between males and females (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This result suggests that surfing could have a positive effect on balance. Full article

Supramolecular Graphene Quantum Dots/Porphyrin Complex as Fluorescence Probe for Metal Ion Sensing

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) obtained by microwave-induced pyrolysis of glutamic acid and triethylenetetramine (trien) are fairly stable, emissive, water-soluble, and positively charged nano-systems able to interact with negatively charged meso-tetrakis(4-sulfonatophenyl) porphyrin (TPPS4). The stoichiometric control during the preparation affords a supramolecular adduct, GQDs@TPPS4, that exhibits a double fluorescence emission from both the GQDs and the TPPS4 fluorophores. These supramolecular aggregates have an overall negative charge that is responsible for the condensation of cations in the nearby aqueous layer, and a three-fold acceleration of the metalation rates of Cu2+ ions has been observed with respect to the parent porphyrin. Addition of various metal ions leads to some changes in the UV/Vis spectra and has a different impact on the fluorescence emission of GQDs and TPPS4. The quenching efficiency of the TPPS4 emission follows the order Cu2+ > Hg2+ > Cd2+ > Pb2+ ~ Zn2+ ~ Co2+ ~ Ni2+ > Mn2+ ~ Cr3+ >> Mg2+ ~ Ca2+ ~ Ba2+, and it has been related to literature data and to the sitting-atop mechanism that large transition metal ions (e.g., Hg2+ and Cd2+) exhibit in their interaction with the macrocyclic nitrogen atoms of the porphyrin, inducing distortion and accelerating the insertion of smaller metal ions, such as Zn2+. For the most relevant metal ions, emission quenching of the porphyrin evidences a linear behavior in the micromolar range, with the emission of the GQDs being moderately affected through a filter effect. Deliberate pollution of the samples with Zn2+ reveals the ability of the GQDs@TPPS4 adduct to detect sensitively Cu2+, Hg2+, and Cd2+ ions. Full article

In this study, four types of fall detection systems for seniors living alone using x-y scatter and Doppler range images measured from frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave (mmWave) sensors were introduced. Despite advancements in fall detection, existing long short-term memory (LSTM)-based approaches often struggle with effectively distinguishing falls from similar activities of daily living (ADLs) due to their uniform treatment of all time steps, potentially overlooking critical motion cues. To address this limitation, an attention mechanism has been integrated. Data was collected from seven participants, resulting in a dataset of 669 samples, including 285 falls and 384 ADLs with walking, lying, inactivity, and sitting. Four LSTM-based architectures for fall detection were proposed and evaluated: Raw-LSTM, Raw-LSTM-Attention, HOG-LSTM, and HOG-LSTM-Attention. The histogram of oriented gradient (HOG) method was used for feature extraction, while LSTM networks captured temporal dependencies. The attention mechanism further enhanced model performance by focusing on relevant input features. The Raw-LSTM model processed raw mmWave radar images through LSTM layers and dense layers for classification. The Raw-LSTM-Attention model extended Raw-LSTM with an added self-attention mechanism within the traditional attention framework. The HOG-LSTM model included an additional preprocessing step upon the RAW-LSTM model where HOG features were extracted and classified using an SVM. The HOG-LSTM-Attention model built upon the HOG-LSTM model by incorporating a self-attention mechanism to enhance the model’s ability to accurately classify activities. Evaluation metrics such as Sensitivity, Precision, Accuracy, and F1-Score were used to compare four architectural models. The results showed that the HOG-LSTM-Attention model achieved the highest performance, with an Accuracy of 95.3% and an F1-Score of 95.5%. Optimal self-attention configuration was found at a 2:64 ratio of number of attention heads to channels for keys and queries. Full article

This study evaluates machine learning-based methods for retrieving thin Arctic sea ice thickness (SIT) from L-band radiometry, using data from the European Space Agency’s (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite. In addition to the operational ESA product, three alternative approaches are assessed: a Random Forest (RF) algorithm, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) that incorporates spatial coherence, and a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network designed to capture temporal coherence. Validation against in situ data from the Beaufort Gyre Exploration Project (BGEP) moorings and the ESA SMOSice campaign demonstrates that the RF algorithm achieves robust performance comparable to the ESA product, despite its simplicity and lack of explicit spatial or temporal modeling. The CNN exhibits a tendency to overestimate SIT and shows higher dispersion, suggesting limited added value when spatial coherence is already present in the input data. The LSTM approach does not improve retrieval accuracy, likely due to the mismatch between satellite resolution and the temporal variability of sea ice conditions. These results highlight the importance of L-band sea ice emission modeling over increasing algorithm complexity and suggest that simpler, adaptable methods such as RF offer a promising foundation for future SIT retrieval efforts. The findings are relevant for refining current methods used with SMOS and for developing upcoming satellite missions, such as ESA’s Copernicus Imaging Microwave Radiometer (CIMR). Full article
