This paper presents the design and performance evaluation of an experimental platform that emulates the static and dynamic behavior of a 3 kW Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). The platform includes a wind turbine emulator (WTE) using a separately excited DC motor (SEDCM) as the prime mover, coupled with a grid-connected doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG). This setup enables comprehensive laboratory studies of a WECS without the need for large-scale field installations. A novel inertia compensation strategy is implemented to ensure the SEDCM accurately replicates the power and torque characteristics of a real wind turbine across various wind profiles. The DFIG was chosen for its high efficiency at variable wind speeds and its reduced power converter requirements compared to other generators. The control strategy for the DFIG is detailed, highlighting its performance and seamless integration within the system. Unlike most studies focusing on generators connected to simple loads, this research considers a grid-connected system, which introduces additional challenges and requirements. This study thoroughly investigates the grid-connected converter, addressing specific demands for grid connection and ensuring compliance with grid standards. Experimental results validate the effectiveness of the emulator, demonstrating its potential as a key tool for optimizing wind turbine control strategies and real-time algorithm validation, and enhancing the performance and reliability of renewable energy systems. This research proposes a robust nonlinear hybrid control approach to the speed control of a multi-input-and-multi-output separately excited DC motor (SEDCM). The motor that was under consideration experienced parametric uncertainties and load disturbances in the weak field region. The proposed technique aims to merge the benefits of adaptive backstepping (AB) and integral sliding mode control (ISMC) to enhance the overall system’s robustness. The unknown parameters with load disturbances are estimated using an adaptation law. These estimated parameters are incorporated into the controller design, to achieve a highly robust controller. The theoretical stability of the system is proved using the Lyapunov stability criteria. The effectiveness of the proposed AB–ISMC was demonstrated by simulation, to track the reference speed under parametric uncertainties and load disturbances. The control performance of the proposed technique was compared to that of feedback linearization (FBL), conventional sliding mode control (SMC), and AB control laws without and with the adaptation law. Regression parameters, such as integral square error, integral absolute error, and integral time absolute error, were calculated to quantitatively analyze the tracking performance and robustness of the implemented nonlinear control techniques. The simulation results demonstrated that the proposed controller could accurately track the reference speed and exhibited robustness, with steady-state error accuracy. Moreover, AB–ISMC overperformed, compared to the FBL, SMC, AB controller without adaptation law and AB controller with adaptation law, in reducing the settling time by factors of 27%, 67%, 23%, and 21%, respectively, thus highlighting the superior performance of the proposed controller. Industries have many rotational operations that are used for design, transport, lift, drilling, rolling, robotics, and many other applications. These rotating applications require a proper controller for accurate control of the operation. Separately excited DC motors (SEDCMs) are versatile and have various industrial operations because of their specific speed control characteristics. So, for smooth and accurate operation of an SEDC motor, controllers should be used. PI and PID controllers are used in many cases, but they are ineffective for nonlinear load operation. A fuzzy controller is a heuristic controller and can provide automatic control of the operation. Its operation depends on the selection of the correct membership values. This work proposes a novel particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique that would provide the optimum value of the membership for fuzzy controllers for optimum control of the industrial processes. To obtain SEDC results, MATLAB simulation was performed, and the fuzzy controller with novel PSO was implemented. A fuzzy PSO controller used for motor speed control operation obtains a rise time of 0.00026 s, settling time of 0.000214 s, maximum overshoot of zero, and delay time of 0.016 s, which are the best values when compared to PID and PID-Fuzzy controllers. It is observed that the results obtained from the separately excited DC motor using a fuzzy PSO controller improve the dynamic behavior of the motor that so it smoothly tracks the required speed without any more overshoot or oscillation than the PID controller. Such dynamic, stable operation of the motor makes it perfect for industrial as well as household operations. Full article

The direct-current (DC) motor has been widely utilized in many industrial applications, such as a multi-motor system, due to its excellent speed control features regardless of its greater maintenance costs. A synchronous regulator is utilized to verify the response of the speed control. The motor speed can be improved utilizing artificial intelligence techniques, for example fuzzy neural networks (FNNs). These networks can be learned and predicted, and they are useful when dealing with nonlinear systems or when severe turbulence occurs. This work aims to design an FNN based on a model reference controller for separately excited DC motor drive systems, which will be applied in a multi-machine system with two DC motors. The MATLAB/Simulink software package has been used to implement the FNMR and investigate the performance of the multi-DC motor. moreover, the online training based on the backpropagation algorithm has been utilized. The obtained results were good for improving the speed response, synchronizing the motors, and applying load during the work of the motors compared to the traditional PI control method. Finally, the multi-motor system that was controlled by the proposed method has been improved where its speed was not affected by the disturbance. Full article
