Background/Objectives: Within the last decade, there has been a 19% increase in stroke-related mortality among individuals aged 45–64. Understanding stroke characteristics is crucial, particularly in the younger age groups. This study describes the key demographics and clinical and anthropometric characteristics based on age categories in young adults admitted to the stroke unit in Abu Dhabi. Methods: This retrospective observational study had data between October 2024 and March 2025. Data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS, with a more detailed analysis conducted across two age-based groups. Results: A total of 51 patients were included, with the median age of 40 (IQR: 37–48) and 44 (86.3%) being males. The median hospital length of stay was 4 days (2–9 days). Most of the patients, 47 (92.2%), had ischemic stroke, with 24 (45.1%) presenting with right-side weakness, and bilateral weakness in 4 (7.8%). The median NIHSS score on admission was 4 (IQR 2–9). Prior to admission, 18 (35.3%) of the patients were known hypertensive, and 12 (23.5%) were diabetic. In terms of anthropometric measurements, the median waist-to-height ratio was 0.58 (0.5–0.69) and BMI was 25.7 (24.2–29.4), with 31 (60.8%) of the patients categorized as either obese or overweight. The statistical significance difference across the age groups was found in the gender distribution only (p = 0.034). Conclusions: In the UAE, more young men are experiencing Stroke due to lifestyle-related factors, many of which can be prevented. This growing trend calls for early screening, better prevention efforts, and tailored rehabilitation programs. Full article

Sexual violence against women is a global issue with profound health consequences, including elevated HIV risk due to genital tract inflammation and injury. However, limited research has examined the influence of mental health on HIV-related immunity after violence. We analyzed longitudinal data from female survivors of past-month rape (N = 25) to explore associations between mental health (perceived stress, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder [PTSD], and resilience) and HIV-associated immune biomarkers in the female genital tract. In bivariate analyses, mental health improved over the three-month follow-up period. Immune biomarker levels remained largely stable, except for TNF-α and SLPI. At baseline, depression was significantly correlated with TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β. In regression analyses, depression was associated with TNF-α (β = −0.133 to −0.152) and IL-6 (β = −0.171 to −0.207). PTSD was significantly associated with IL-1α (β = 0.576 to 1.681). Depression and resilience were negatively associated with percent HIV inhibition in adjusted models. These findings suggest that depression and PTSD are associated with genital tract inflammation following sexual violence, which may compromise mucosal immunity and enhance HIV risk. This highlights the importance of integrated mental health and immunological care for survivors and the need for further research into psychoneuroimmune pathways influencing HIV risk after trauma. Under the intensifying water shortages in the vegetation season, early identification of Ips typographus L. damage is crucial for preventing wide outbreaks, which undermine the economic potential of commercial stands of Norway spruce (Picea abies Karst.) across Europe. For this purpose, remote sensing based on satellite images is considered one of the most efficient methods, particularly in homogenous and wide forested landscapes. However, under highly heterogeneous seminatural managed forest landscapes in lowland Central and Northern Europe, as illustrated by the eastern Baltic region and Latvia in particular, the efficiency of such an approach can lack the desired accuracy. Hence, the identification of smaller damage patches by I. typographus, which can act as a source of wider outbreaks, can be overlooked, and situational awareness can be further aggravated by infrastructure artefacts. In this study, the accuracy of satellite imaging for the identification of I. typographus damage was evaluated, focusing on the occurrence of false positives and particularly false negatives obtained from the comparison with UAV imaging. Across the studied landscapes, correct or partially correct identification of damage patches larger than 30 m2 occurred in 73% of cases. Still, the satellite image analysis of the highly heterogeneous landscape resulted in quite a common occurrence of false negatives (up to one-third of cases), which were related to stand and patch properties. The high rate of false negatives, however, is crucial for the prevention of outbreaks, as the sources of outbreaks can be underestimated, burdening prompt and hence effective implication of countermeasures. Accordingly, elaborating an analysis of satellite images by incorporating stand inventory data could improve the efficiency of early detection systems, especially when coupled with UAV reconnaissance of heterogeneous landscapes, as in the eastern Baltic region. Antibiotic feeding in shrimp farming is an optional practice conducted with the aim of preventing and controlling bacterial diseases. However, the administration of antibiotics can disrupt the microbiota of both shrimp and surrounding environment, potentially compromising host health. Given the limited effective antibiotic options in aquaculture, it is crucial to evaluate the effects of florfenicol (FF) on the intestinal health of shrimp and the associated microbial communities. This study first investigated the impact of FF on the intestinal structure of Penaeus vannamei over two feeding durations (5 and 10 days), each followed by a 10-day basal diet recovery period. Simultaneously, variations in microbial communities and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in both the intestine and rearing water were explored. The results showed that intestinal damage was aggravated with the extension of FF duration and gradually recovered after FF withdrawal. Significant changes in microbial composition and β-diversity were observed in both the rearing water and intestine following FF feeding. Extending the FF treatment to 10 days led to a reduced abundance of Rhodobacteraceae and an increased abundance of Flavobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae in the intestine after 10 days of feeding the basic diet, which may pose a potential risk to shrimp health. Based on correlation analysis of ARGs, microbial communities and pathogenic bacteria, we speculated that rearing water may serve as a reservoir for ARGs dissemination compared to the shrimp intestine. These findings are of great importance for assessing the impact of administration duration under the FF therapeutic dose and highlight the potential risks associated with its overuse in shrimp farming. Service-learning has emerged as a promising pedagogical approach to address social challenges while fostering students’ academic, socioemotional, and civic development. Despite the growing body of literature, there is a lack of systematic reviews evaluating its effectiveness in secondary education beyond the United States. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to synthesize the available empirical research on service-learning interventions implemented with secondary education students (grades 7–10) outside United States. Following The Campbell Collaboration guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted across Web of Science and ProQuest, supplemented by other resources (general web search, hand searches, ongoing research, open access and relevant institutions and networks). Inclusion criteria required quantitative empirical studies (randomized controlled trials, quasi-experimental designs, or pretest–posttest designs) published from 2008 to June 2025 that measured academic, cognitive, socio-emotional, civic, and community outcomes using quantitative procedures. After screening, 10 studies met the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate that service-learning programs can generate positive outcomes on academic performance and non-cognitive skills. Nevertheless, methodological weaknesses and heterogeneity across studies prevent drawing robust conclusions. The review highlights the need for more rigorous research to strengthen the evidence base for service-learning among adolescents in systems worldwide. Full article

In modern e-learning environments, ensuring both student identity verification and concentration monitoring during online examinations has become increasingly important. This paper introduces a robust sequential framework that integrates Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and fuzzy logic to achieve reliable face recognition and interpretable attentiveness assessment. Images from the Extended Yale B (cropped) dataset are preprocessed through grayscale normalization and resizing, while GANs generate synthetic variations in pose, illumination, and occlusion to enrich the training set and improve generalization. The CNN extracts discriminative facial features for identity recognition, and a fuzzy inference system transforms the CNN’s confidence scores into human-interpretable concentration levels. To stabilize learning and prevent overfitting, the model incorporates dropout regularization, batch normalization, and extensive data augmentation. Comprehensive evaluations using confusion matrices, ROC–AUC, and precision–recall analyses demonstrate an accuracy of 98.42%. The proposed framework offers a scalable and interpretable solution for secure and reliable online exam proctoring. Full article

High frame rate imaging of synthetic aperture radar (SAR), also known as video SAR (ViSAR), has attracted extensive research in recent years. When ViSAR system parameters are fixed, there is a technical trade-off between high frame rates and high resolution. In traditional ViSAR, the frame rate is usually increased by increasing the carrier frequency to increase the azimuth modulation frequency and reducing the synthetic aperture time. This paper attempts to propose a strip non-overlapping mode ViSAR based on Orbital Angular Momentum (OAM) beams, which uses the topological charge of vortex electromagnetic wave (VEW) to improve the azimuth modulation frequency, to improve the frame rate. By introducing the concept of VEW frame splitting, a corresponding time-varying topological charge mode is designed for ViSAR imaging. This design successfully introduces an additional azimuth modulation frequency while maintaining the original imaging resolution, thus significantly improving the frame rate performance of the ViSAR system. However, the Bessel function term in VEW causes amplitude modulation in the echo signal, while the additional frequency modulation causes the traditional matching filter to fail. To address these problems, an improved Range-Doppler algorithm (RDA) is proposed in this paper. By employing the range cell center approximation method, the negative effect of the Bessel function on imaging is reduced effectively. Furthermore, for the introduction of tuning frequency, the azimuth matched filter is specially improved, which effectively prevents the defocusing issues caused by the mismatch of tuning frequency. Finally, the computer simulation results prove that the ViSAR system and imaging algorithm based on VEW can effectively improve the frame rate of ViSAR and maintain the imaging resolution, which provides a research direction for the development of ViSAR technology. Perceived Effectiveness of Workplace Violence Prevention Strategies Among Bulgarian Healthcare Professionals: A Cross-Sectional Survey

Background: Workplace violence (WPV) is a pervasive occupational hazard in healthcare that undermines staff safety and quality of care. In Bulgaria, WPV remains widespread and underreported, despite recent legislative initiatives. This study assessed healthcare professionals’ perceptions of the effectiveness of WPV prevention strategies and examined how prior exposure shapes these perceptions. Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional online survey was conducted in December 2024 with 944 healthcare professionals from multiple sectors. Participants rated the perceived effectiveness of 11 prevention strategies, including environmental/security measures, organizational, and national-level interventions, on a three-point scale. Friedman ANOVA with Kendall’s W assessed overall strategy rankings, while Mann–Whitney U tests with rank-biserial correlations compared specific effectiveness ratings between subgroups defined by WPV exposure (experienced or witnessed vs. not exposed in the previous 12 months). Results: In the previous 12 months, 34.7% of respondents reported direct WPV, and 43.4% had either experienced or witnessed incidents. Friedman ANOVA indicated significant differences in perceived effectiveness across strategies (Kendall’s W = 0.13), with stronger differentiation among violence-exposed respondents (W = 0.37) than among non-exposed respondents (W = 0.09). National-level interventions and security/response measures were consistently ranked the highest. Mann–Whitney tests showed significantly higher endorsement of most strategies among violence-exposed professionals, with large effect sizes for security measures and enforcement of sanctions. Conclusions: Bulgarian healthcare professionals view WPV prevention as requiring a multicomponent approach that integrates robust national policy with organizational and environmental measures. Direct exposure to violence is associated with stronger support for security-focused and national interventions. These findings inform context-specific, evidence-based WPV prevention programs for Bulgarian healthcare facilities. Full article

Worldwide, prostate cancer (PC) has a rising incidence and is the sixth leading cause of death globally, especially with increasing cases in developing countries. Risk factors for PC include genetic predisposition, family history, race/ethnicity, and various occupational factors like diet, obesity, smoking, and transmitted diseases. The Janus kinase (JAK)-signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway can be activated by hormones, cytokines, and growth factors, and it plays a role in many vital biological processes such as cell growth, differentiation, immune regulation, and apoptosis. Dysregulation of JAK/STAT3 can lead to cancer, inflammation, diabetes, and neurodegenerative disorders. In cancers, including PC, STAT3 promotes cell survival, progression, angiogenesis, and metastasis. Inhibitors targeting JAK and STAT3 tested in vivo have shown potential to inhibit malignant cell growth. Additionally, flavonoids are bioactive plant compounds that are important in preventing inflammation, oxidative stress, and cancer. Research indicates that natural flavonoids can be developed into cancer-preventive and therapeutic agents. Experimental studies have demonstrated that some flavonoids can inhibit PC development. The main goal of this review is to present the incidence and risk factors of PC, the JAK/STAT3 pathway and its inhibitors, and how flavonoids may influence this pathology. Full article

Ganoderma lucidum triterpenoids (GLTs) exhibit potential anti-obesity activity. However, their mechanism remains unclear. In this study, triterpenoids were extracted from G. lucidum via ultrahigh-pressure extraction. Using a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced mouse model, we showed that GLT treatment (100 and 200 mg/kg) significantly reduced body weight and lipid accumulation without changing food intake. Next, we found that GLT significantly inhibited preadipocyte differentiation and adipogenesis and reduced the expression of adipogenic genes, including PPARγ, C/EBPα, FASN, and SCD-1. Moreover, network pharmacology predicted a total of 306 potential targets, among which FYN, PRKCQ, PTPRF, HRH1, and HCRTR2 were identified as the core targets via a machine learning algorithm. Interestingly, GLT upregulated the expression of PRKCQ, while the deletion of PRKCQ significantly reversed the anti-adipogenic effect of GLT. In addition, we found that neutral GLT may play a dominant role in inhibiting adipogenic differentiation. These findings suggest for the first time that GLT inhibits adipogenesis and lipid accumulation via the induction of PRKCQ in adipocytes. This study provides a scientific basis for the application of GLT in the prevention and treatment of obesity, as both a pharmaceutical agent and a functional food. Full article

A rapid decline of coral reefs is taking place around the world, with climate warming being the biggest driver behind this deterioration. Efforts to increase coral climate resilience via bioengineering methods have thus become urgent, and there is hope that such interventions can help corals and coral reefs survive until a time when no further climate warming occurs and perhaps a future of climate cooling is imaginable. The manipulation of coral-associated bacterial communities is among the less advanced interventions currently being explored. Nevertheless, early findings provide confidence that some level of thermal enhancement can be achieved via the inoculation of corals with beneficial bacteria. The small number of studies available, however, is limited in terms of the traits used to select candidate bacteria and their ability to ascribe host enhancement to specific bacterial taxa and functions. Further, findings to date are unable to decipher whether candidate bacteria integrate stably within the coral microbiome. These shortcomings prevent assessment of the efficacy of bacterial manipulation to enhance the long-term thermal resilience of corals on the reef. Traffic Accident Severity Prediction via Large Language Model-Driven Semantic Feature Enhancement

Predicting the severity of traffic accidents remains challenging due to the limited ability of existing methods to extract deep semantic information from unstructured accident narratives, as traditional approaches typically depend on structured data alone. This study proposes a severity prediction approach enhanced by semantic risk reasoning derived from large language models (LLMs). A prompt-engineering template is designed to guide LLMs in extracting proxy semantic features from accident descriptions, forming an enriched feature set that incorporates causal logic. These semantic features are fused with traditional structured features through three integration strategies—direct feature concatenation, optimized feature selection, and model-level fusion. Experiments based on 4013 accident records from expressways in Yunnan Province, China, demonstrate that models using LLM-derived semantic features significantly outperform those relying solely on structured features. Notably, the LightGBM model utilizing semantic features within a balanced learning framework achieves a severe accident recall of 77.8%. While model-level fusion proves optimal for XGBoost (improving Macro-F1 to 0.6356), we identify a “feature dilution” effect in other classifiers, where high-quality semantic reasoning is compromised by low-quality structured noise. These findings indicate that the proposed approach effectively enhances the identification of high-risk accidents and offers a novel semantic-aware solution for traffic safety management. Furthermore, the obtained results provide actionable insights for traffic management agencies to optimize emergency response resource allocation and formulate targeted accident prevention strategies. To investigate the influence of different water-rich conditions on tunnel excavation stability, three typical working conditions were designed based on the engineering characteristics of tunnels in water-rich areas (with groundwater levels 70 m, 55 m, and 40 m from the tunnel bottom, respectively). Numerical simulation research on tunnel excavation stability was carried out using the finite difference method. The results show that the influence of surrounding rock mechanical strength indexes on pore water pressure distribution is significantly greater than that of water-rich conditions; under the action of pore water pressure, the displacements of different parts of the tunnel structure exhibit differentiated characteristics, with the displacement of the arch foot being larger than that of the vault; the tunnel bottom is a high-risk area for geological hazards such as shear failure and mud burst, which requires key prevention and control. The research results can provide data support and technical reference for disaster early warning and support design optimization of tunnel projects in water-rich areas. Full article

Deleterious variants in SCN5A lead to a wide clinical spectrum that includes pathologies characterized by life-threatening cardiac events (CEs). In the pediatric population, early identification, management, and risk stratification of these pathologies are the main current challenges. This study analyzed a Spanish pediatric cohort (≤18 years) carrying rare SCN5A variants to explore genotype–phenotype correlations. A retrospective descriptive cohort study, including clinical, demographic, and genetic data of probands and their relatives, was conducted. Out of 100 children studied, 69 had definitively deleterious SCN5A variants (26 females, 38%; median age: 3 years, IQR 1–12). The main diagnoses were isolated Brugada syndrome (BrS) (31; 45%); isolated long QT syndrome type 3 (LQT3) (5; 7%); isolated progressive cardiac conduction disease (PCCD) (1; 2%); isolated familial atrial fibrillation (1; 2%); overlapping phenotypes (7; 10%) including: BrS-PCCD (2; 2.8%); BrS-LQT3 (1; 1.4%); premature ventricular contraction-dilated cardiomyopathy (1; 1.4%); BrS-LQT3-PCCD (1; 1.4%); BrS-PCCD-sick sinus syndrome (SSS) (1; 1.4%) and BrS-PCCD-SSS-familial atrial fibrillation (1; 1.4%). Of them, 13 (19%) patients presented with CEs (cardiogenic syncope, ventricular tachycardia/fibrillation, sudden cardiac arrest/death, and appropriate implantable cardio defibrillator shock). These findings underscore the utility of genetic testing for early diagnosis, risk stratification, and personalized management, enhancing preventive strategies for CE prevention in pediatrics. Influenza A viruses exhibit broad host tropism, infecting multiple species including humans, avian species, and swine. Swine influenza virus (SIV), while primarily circulating in porcine populations, demonstrates zoonotic potential with sporadic human infections. In this investigation, we identified two H1N1 subtype swine influenza A virus strains designated A/swine/China/SD6591/2019(H1N1) (abbreviated SD6591) and A/swine/China/SD6592/2019(H1N1) (abbreviated SD6592) in Shandong Province, China. The GenBank accession numbers of the SD6591 viral gene segments are PV464931-PV464938, and the GenBank accession numbers corresponding to each of the eight SD6592 viral gene segments are PV464939-PV464946. Phylogenetic and recombination analyses suggest potential evolutionary differences between the isolates. SD6591 displayed a unique triple-reassortant genotype: comparative nucleotide homology assessments demonstrated that the PB2, PB1, NP, NA, HA, and NEP genes shared the highest similarity with classical swine-origin H1N1 viruses. In contrast, SD6592 maintained genomic conservation with previously characterized H1N1 swine strains, although neither of these two isolates exhibited significant intrasegmental recombination events. Through comprehensive sequence analysis of these H1N1 SIVs, this study provides preliminary insights into their evolutionary history and underscores the persistent risk of cross-species transmission at the human–swine interface. These findings establish an essential foundation for enhancing national SIV surveillance programs and informing evidence-based prevention strategies against emerging influenza threats. Full article
