MQ copolymers, consisting of monofunctional (M) and tetrafunctional (Q) siloxane units, are versatile materials used as additives, adhesives, and in composite materials. Functional groups, such as vinyl substituents, in M-units allow for the tailoring of properties for specific applications. This study aimed to synthesize vinyl-containing MQ copolymers (MVinMQ) via a controlled, chlorine-free method to explore the regulation of their composition and properties. The results demonstrated precise control over the copolymer architecture, with hydroxyl content and molecular weight increasing alongside the Q-unit fraction. All obtained copolymers exhibited high thermal stability, with 5% mass loss occurring above 295 °C in air and 365 °C in argon. Fractionation data supported a molecular composite model consisting of an inorganic core and an organic shell. Polycondensation in an active medium is an effective method for the directed synthesis of structurally tunable MVinMQ copolymers, offering a versatile platform for developing functional hybrid materials, modifiers, and cross-linking agents. By introducing thiourea and ether groups into MQ silicone resin polymer via free radical polymerization, a polyether-thiourea-siloxane (PTS) copolymer was synthesized. The characterization of the synthesized copolymer indicated the occurrence of H-bonding interactions and a narrow molecular weight polydispersity index. Antifouling coatings were produced by incorporating the synthesized copolymer and phenylmethylsilicone oil (PSO). The addition of a minute amount of copolymer enhanced the hydrophobicity of the coating by increasing its surface roughness. However, excessive addition of copolymer resulted in a significant deterioration of the coating surface smoothness. The copolymer improved the mechanical properties of the coating, but excessive addition decreased the crosslinking density and weakened the mechanical performance. With increasing copolymer addition, the leaching of PSO was significantly improved due to the change in the storage form of PSO in the coating caused by the copolymer. Based on the H-bonding interaction of the copolymer, the adhesion strength between the coating and the substrate was significantly improved. However, excessive addition of copolymer did not infinitely enhance the adhesion strength. The antifouling performance demonstrated that an appropriate amount of copolymer could obtain adequate PSO leaching efficiency, thereby effectively enhancing the antifouling performance of the coating. In this study, the prepared coating P12 (12 g of PTS in 100 g of PDMS) showed the most effective antifouling performance. Full article

Abstract
In this paper, we described a straightforward one-step chemical method for the synthesis of semiconductor quantum dots(QDs)—block copolymer brushes functionalized graphene oxide(GO) fluorescence nanohybrids. In this paper, we described a straightforward one-step chemical method for the synthesis of semiconductor quantum dots(QDs)—block copolymer brushes functionalized graphene oxide(GO) fluorescence nanohybrids. The azobenzene-terminated block copolymer poly(N-isopropylacrylamid)-b-poly(styrene-co-5-(2-methacryoylethyloxymethyl)-8-quinolinol)(PNIPAM-b-P(St-co-MQ)) was modified on the surface of GO sheets via host–guest interactions between β-cyclodextrin-modified GO and azobenzene moieties, and simultaneously CdSe/ZnS QDs were integrated on the block copolymer brushes through the coordination between 8-hydroxyquinoline units in the polymer brushes and CdSe/ZnS QDs. The resulting fluorescence nanohybrid exhibited dual photoluminescence at 620 nm and 526 nm, respectively, upon excitation at 380 nm and LCST-type thermo-responsive behavior which originated from the change in the PNIPAM conformation in the block copolymer brushes of GO sheets. Copolymers containing MQ silicone and acrylate were synthesized by controlling the additive amount of compositions. Subsequently, fouling release coatings based on the copolymer with the incorporation of non-reactive phenylmethylsilicone oil were prepared. The surface properties of the coating (CAMQ40) were consistent with that of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) elastomer, which ensured good hydrophobicity. Moreover, the seawater volume swelling rate of all prepared coatings was less than 5%, especially for CAMQ40 with only 1.37%. Copolymers enhanced the mechanical properties of the coatings, while the enhancement was proportional to the molar content of structural units from acrylate in the copolymer. More importantly, the adhesion performance between the prepared coatings and substrates indicated that pull-off strength values were more than 1.6 MPa, meaning a high adhesion strength. The phenylmethylsilicone oil leaching observation determined that the oil leaching efficiency increased with the increase in the structural unit’s molar content from MQ silicone in the copolymer, which was mainly owing to the decrease in compatibility between oil and the cured coating, as well as the decrease in mechanical properties. High oil leaching efficiency could make up for the decrease in the biofouling removal rate due to the enhancement of the elastic modulus. For CAMQ40, it had an excellent antifouling performance at 30 days of exposure time with more than 92% of biofouling removal rate, which was confirmed by biofilm adhesion assay. Full article

Colorless transparent vulcanizates of silicone elastomers were prepared by mixing the components in a common solvent followed by solvent removal. We studied the correlation between the mechanical behavior of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-rubber compositions prepared using MQ (mono-(M) and tetra-(Q) functional siloxane) copolymers with different ratios of M and Q parts as a molecular filler. The composition and molecular structure of the original rubber, MQ copolymers, and carboxyl-containing PDMS oligomers were also investigated. The simplicity of the preparation of the compositions, high strength and elongation at break, and their variability within a wide range allows us to consider silicone elastomers as a promising alternative to silicone materials prepared by traditional methods. Building novel functional nanomaterials with a polymer is one of the most dynamic research fields at present. Here, three amphiphilic block copolymers of 8-hydroxyquinoline derivative motifs (MQ) with excellent coordination function were synthesized by Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer Polymerization (RAFT) polymerization. The coordination micelles were prepared through the self-assembly process, which the MQ motifs were dispersed in the hydrophobic polystyrene (PSt) blocks and hydrophilic Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide (PNIPAM)) blocks, respectively. The dual-emission micelles including the intrinsic red light emission of quantum dots (QDs) and the coordination green light emission of Zn2+-MQ complexes were built by introducing the CdSe/ZnS and CdTe/ZnS QDs in the core and shell precisely in the coordination micelles through the coordination-driven self-assembly process. Furthermore, based on the principle of three primary colors that produce white light emission, vinyl carbazole units (Polyvinyl Carbazole, PVK) with blue light emission were introduced into the hydrophilic PNIPAM blocks to construct the white light micelles that possess special multi-emission properties in which the intrinsic red light emission of QDs, the coordination green light of Zn2+-MQ complexes, and the blue light emission of PVK were synergized. The dual and multi-emission hybrid micelles have great application prospects in ratiometric fluorescent probes and biomarkers. Full article

To overcome the inherent limitation that the preparation of high molecular weight MQ copolymers (Mw ≥ 30,000 g/mol) via the hydrolysis and condensation of solicate salts generally results in an intractable gel, vinylphenyl-containing MQ silicone resin with a high molecular weight was designed and synthesized through the hydrosilylation reaction of vinyl-containing MQ silicone resin and linear poly(diphenylsiloxane) with two terminal Si–H bonds. The weight average molecular weight of these modified copolymers reported here is at least 30,000 dal·mol−1. These polymers have favorable thermal stability and a higher refractive index than that of the base resin due to the formation of novel regular macromolecular structures and the introduction of phenyl groups. These inorganic/organic hybrid materials could be used as a potential component for temperature-resistance electronics adhesive, heat-resistant coatings and high-performance liquid silicone rubber. Moreover, the proposed process also provides a possibility to choose higher molecular weight MQ silicones according to application requirements. Full article

In this review, we discuss currently available studies on the synthesis and properties of MQ copolymers. The data on methods of producing hydrolytic and heterofunctional polycondensation of functional organosilanes as well as the obtaining MQ copolymers based on silicic acids and nature silicates are considered. The ratio of M and Q monomers and the production method determine the structure of MQ copolymers and, accordingly, their physicochemical characteristics. It is shown that the most successful synthetic approach is a polycondensation of organoalkoxysilanes in the medium of anhydrous acetic acid, which reduces the differences in reactivity of M and Q monomers and leads to obtaining a product with uniform composition in all fractions, with full absence of residual alkoxy-groups. The current concept of MQ copolymers is that of organo-inorganic hybrid systems with nanosized crosslinked inorganic regions limited by triorganosilyl groups and containing residual hydroxyl groups. The systems can be considered as a peculiar molecular composites consisting of separate parts that play the role of a polymer matrix, a plasticizer, and a nanosized filler. Full article
