The presence of people has a complex relationship with public safety—while it is often associated with increased natural surveillance, it can also attract specific types of crime under certain urban conditions. This exploratory study examines this dual relationship by integrating Jane Jacobs’s urban theories and the principles derived from them in Quito, Ecuador. Anchored in Jacobs’s concept of “eyes on the street,” this research assesses four morphological dimensions—density, land use mixture, contact opportunity, and accessibility through nine specific indicators. A binary logistic regression model is used to examine how these features relate to the incidence of street robberies against individuals. The findings indicate that urban form characteristics that foster “eyes on the street”—such as higher population density and a mix of commercial and residential uses—show statistically significant associations with lower rates of street robbery. However, other indicators of “eyes on the street”—such as larger block sizes, proximity to public transport stations, greater street lighting, and a higher balance between residential and non-residential land uses—correlate with increased crime rates. Some indicators, such as population density, block size, and distance to public transport stations, show statistically significant relationships, though the practical effect size compared to residential/non-residential balance, commercial and facility mix, and street lighting is modest. These results underscore the importance of contextualizing Jacobs’s frameworks and offer a novel contribution to the literature by empirically testing morphological indicators promoting the presence of people against actual crime data. Though a variety of methods are used to conduct West Nile virus (WNV) surveillance, accurate prediction and prevention of outbreaks remain a global challenge. Previous studies have established that the concentration of antibodies to mosquito saliva is directly related to the intensity of exposure to mosquito bites and can be a good proxy to determine risk of infection in human populations. To assess exposure characteristics and transmission dynamics among avian communities, we tested the levels of IgY antibodies against whole salivary glands of Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus, as well as WNV antigen, in 300 Northern cardinals sampled from April 2019 to October 2019 in St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana. Though there were no significant differences in antibody responses among sex or age groups, exposure to Ae. albopictus bites was more positively associated with exposure to WNV compared with Cx. quinquefasciatus exposure (ρ = 0.2525, p < 0.001; ρ = 0.1752, p = 0.02437). This association was more pronounced among female birds (ρ = 0.3004, p = 0.0075), while no significant relationship existed between exposure to either mosquito vector and WNV among male birds in the study. In general, two seasonal trends in exposure were found, noting that exposure to Ae. albopictus becomes less intense throughout the season (ρ = −0.1529, p = 0.04984), while recaptured birds in the study were found to have increased exposure to Cx. quinquefasciatus by the end of the season (ρ = 0.277, p = 0.0468). Additionally, we report the identification of several immunogenic salivary proteins, including D7 family proteins, from both mosquito vectors among the birds. Our results suggest that Ae. albopictus may have a role in early-season transmission of WNV, particularly among brooding females and hatchling cardinals. However, bloodmeal analysis was not included in this work and further studies are needed to verify this assumption. Yet, broad circulation of WNV in nesting avian communities could enhance risk of infection among Cx. quinquefasciatus mosquitoes in the late season, with the potential to contribute to human disease incidence and epizootic spillover in the environment. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in mediating life-history processes, where it can compromise survival and reproduction through harmful alterations to DNA, lipids, and proteins. In this study, we investigated oxidative stress in Cape ground squirrels (Xerus inauris), a longer-lived African ground squirrel species with a high reproductive skew and unique life history strategies. We measured oxidative stress as total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total oxidant status (TOS), and an oxidative stress index (OSI) in blood plasma from individuals of approximately known ages. Our results reveal a distinct pattern of decreasing oxidative stress with age, consistent across both sexes. Females exhibited lower OSI and TOS levels than males. Males employing different life-history strategies, namely natal (staying at home), had significantly lower oxidative stress compared to the band (roaming male groups), likely due to variations in metabolic rate, activity, and feeding rates. However, both strategies exhibited reduced oxidative stress with age, though the underlying mechanisms require further investigation. We propose that selection pressures favoring survival contributed to the observed reduction in oxidative stress with age, potentially maximizing lifetime reproductive success in this species. Jane Jacob’s concepts of urban vitality and diversity have become prevailing urban planning philosophies in most countries for making cities more livable. Recent changes in demographics and the impacts of COVID-19 have exacerbated the economic and social challenges that cities commonly face, particularly spatiotemporal heterogeneities. Being able to understand these heterogeneities in scalable approaches is fundamental to tackling these challenges in cities. Therefore, this article aims to provide a new form of scalable estimation of urban vitality by using the de facto population. Instead of merely adopting static statistical information such as morphological characteristics in areas, we leverage dynamic factors such as internal mobility flows and energy use intensity as proxies for the spatiotemporal dynamics of indoor and outdoor behaviors of crowds. In this way, we combine dynamic attributes and static features to describe the patterns of urban vitality, which are directly related to spatiotemporal dynamics in urban places. We utilize GNSS-based mobile data and building energy usage intensity as dynamic proxies along with static data such as land use mix and age distribution. To better capture spatial heterogeneity, we use a Multiscale Geographically Weighted Regression (MGWR) model to identify the relationships between the de facto population and the dynamic and static factors. Drawing from the factors determining urban vitality, this article provides policy implications for alleviating spatiotemporal urban imbalances. These data-driven implications can fill the technical knowledge gaps in establishing planning strategies for achieving urban sustainability while enhancing overall subjective livability. Full article

Starting from Jane Jacobs’ critiques and largely promoted and emphasized by New Urbanism, land mixed use (LMU) has become prevalent worldwide. It is believed to be an efficient approach to shaping a higher level of vitality in the economy, equality in society, and quality in the environment. To reveal the differences of this effect at distinct spatial scales, this study selected the two most related outcomes of LMU—resident population distribution and changes—to investigate the LMU impacts. A novel framework is developed to quantify the interactive impact of pairwise LMU-related factors at multiple scales, and the geographical detector is applied to identify the relationship between resident population distribution/changes and LMU. Taking the Jiading District of Shanghai as a pilot case, the framework was applied and tested. The results showed LMU affected resident population distribution distinctively from 600 m to 3000 m grid scales. The grid scale of 1800 m, approximately ten blocks, is revealed to be the optimal scale for discussing LMU with the selected factors. Also, these factors play different roles at different spatial scales. Some factors strongly affect the resident population distribution only when working with other factors. The study emphasized the crucial role of scale in LMU and suggested an open framework to support the decision making and policy making in planning for a better performance of smart growth and sustainability via LMU. It can help researchers obtain the optimal scale for the LMU plans with different sets of factors and identify the key factors in various contexts. Thus, this framework also contributes to supporting other practices of land mixed use beyond our study region. Full article

Bold and comprehensive action is needed to prevent diet-related diseases in rural areas, which includes improving food environments to enable healthier dietary practices. Rural health services are integral to the health of rural populations, yet their role in community disease prevention is not swell understood. This study sought to understand health service, local government, and food outlet stakeholders’ perspectives on (1) the drivers of unhealthy retail environments in a rural setting; (2) the role of rural health services in supporting changes in local food environments; and to (3) identify characteristics of potential interventions. Two Group Model Building workshops were held with health service and local government leaders (n = 9), and interviews were conducted with local food outlet participants (n = 13). Key themes included ‘enablers to healthier food environments’, ‘barriers to healthier food environments’, ‘Rural health services are a leading broker of knowledge for healthy food environments’, and ‘characteristics of desirable healthy food environment interventions.’. Rural health services can play a key role in addressing the current barriers to healthy food environments in rural areas. Effective promotion of healthier diets in rural populations will require consideration of key stakeholder perspectives and the development of further evidence on the role that rural health services can play in improving the healthiness of food environments. The design of campuses, like other aspects of contemporary environmental design, must be reassessed in light of the challenge of sustainability. This paper considers the “modern” campus design typology (including business campuses, commercial districts, hospitals, and schools) as a design paradigm for pedestrian public space, with implications for human flourishing and well-being. Its findings point to a serious problem: while the foundational design theories of a century ago have been widely critiqued as an obsolete way of thinking about cities, human nature, biological nature, and even the nature of mathematical and physical structures, we find that, in the case of campuses, the pervasive influence of these obsolete theories can still be seen in practice. Specifically, a new “techno-modernist” aesthetic offers visually exciting new “neoplastic” forms but is built on essentially the same discredited concepts of urban space. We propose a more directly human-oriented design methodology to promote the well-being of occupants, and improve outcomes for creative development, education, and health. This analysis resurrects tested traditional design tools and validates them through scientific findings from mathematics and neuroscience. It also adopts the older “design pattern” methodology of Christopher Alexander by linking it to biophilia and neuro-design. Full article

The ways Gothic fairy tales and fairy-tale feminism interact are not always clear. An undercurrent of feminist studies of fairy tales is fueled by the 1970s Lurie-Lieberman debate, which focused on the question of whether fairy tales liberate or repress women. Meanwhile, critics such as Lorna Piatti-Farnell and Lucie Armitt have offered studies of the interplay between Gothic horror and fairy tales. However, these studies have limits, often emphasizing the violence, self-mutilation, and cannibalism of women, like those in Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm’s versions of “Cinderella” and “Snow White”. This paper argues that “Rapunzel” (1812) is key for understanding the Gothic and feminist discourses of Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847). Firstly, this paper argues that a self-reflexive and self-productive relationship between subjectivity and desire shapes and disrupts the Gothic, fairy-tale, and feminist discourses of Jane Eyre, resulting in a specular feminine-I that has inspired pluralistic readings of the text. Secondly, an analysis of the Rapunzelian metaphors of ‘wicked’ hunger and ideological towers unmasks the double consciousness that not only fetters feminine subjectivity but delimits the domestic structures of marriage and home. Multiplying the ways nineteenth-century Gothicism, fairy tales, and feminism may interact, Brontë’s specular study of feminine desire makes way for a productive and agential feminine speaking-I. Urban vitality, understood as a key factor in the achievement of cities’ sustainability, shows a strong relationship with urban morphology. The city theorist Jane Jacobs suggested morphological aspects to promote vital cities in the 1960s, which remain valid in the present. However, few studies in the Andean region quantitatively exemplify this. This paper aims to test the measurement of urban vitality in a neighborhood of Quito, Ecuador, called La Mariscal, integrating Jacobs’ approach. In particular, three urban vitality indexes are evaluated with the application of GIS software using cadastral data obtained from the Metropolitan District of Quito and field data collection. Results show that context-based previous knowledge and scale of analysis are essential factors in the configuration of dimensions, indicators, and spatial representation of any urban vitality index. In the study area, land use mixture, contact opportunity, and accessibility dimensions are fundamental. Regarding indicators, the incorporation of informal small-scale commerce, the quality of sidewalks, and well-conditioned street furniture is recommended. Finally, a hybrid representation (raster and vectorial) is suggested to precisely measure urban vitality at a block scale. Altogether, by providing a comparative approach, we intend to provide a useful framework for researchers and planners to study urban vitality in Andean cities. Full article

Limited therapies exist for neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)-associated plexiform neurofibroma (PN). For this reason, the activity of vinblastine (VBL) and methotrexate (MTX) was evaluated in children and young adults with NF1 and PN. Patients ≤ 25 years of age with progressive and/or inoperable NF1-PN received VBL 6 mg/m2 and MTX 30 mg/m2 weekly for 26 weeks, followed by every 2 weeks for 26 weeks. Objective response rate was the primary endpoint. Of 25 participants enrolled, 23 were evaluable. The median age of participants was 6.6 years (range 0.3–20.7). The most frequent toxicities were neutropenia and elevation of transaminases. On two-dimensional (2D) imaging, 20 participants (87%) had stable tumor, with a median time to progression of 41.5 months (95% confidence interval 16.9, 64.9). Two of eight participants (25%) with airway involvement demonstrated functional improvements including decreased positive pressure requirements and apnea-hypopnea index. A post hoc three-dimensional (3D) analysis of PN volumes was completed on 15 participants with amenable imaging; 7 participants (46%) had progressive disease on or by the end of therapy. VBL/MTX was well-tolerated but did not result in objective volumetric response. Furthermore, 3D volumetric analysis highlighted the lack of sensitivity of 2D imaging for PN response evaluation. This study focuses on the assessment of historic city vitality to address increasingly fragmented urban patterns and to prevent the decline of livability in older urban areas. In 1961, Jane Jacobs theorized urban vitality and found the main conditions that were required for the promotion of life in cities: diversity of land use, small block sizes, diversity of buildings with varied characteristics and ages, density of people and buildings, accessibility for all people without depending on private transport, and distance to border elements. Jacobs’ criteria for urban vitality has had an indisputable influence on urban researchers and planners especially in the Anglo-American context. This perspective has influenced the development of New Urbanism and similar planning policies, such as neo-traditional communities and transit oriented development, yet her theories have to be more substantiated in Asia’s developing cities, especially in China’s historic cities. In order to verify the significance of Jacobs’ urban vitality theory in Chinese historic cities, we develop a composite measure of 16 variables of built environment, and we test it using GIS-sDNA in a historic city with an aging population and low-income in Qingdao. A systematic approach to urban spatial analysis allows us to provide a detailed spatial interpretation of a historic city form. The results emphasize that historic cities vitality, far from being homogeneous, followed a multi-centered distribution pattern, which is related to the previous European planning of the region, where a grid-type pattern was more likely to disperse urban vitality. The results can serve as a useful framework for studying the livability and vitality of different areas of the city in different geographical contexts. Full article

This article analyses three recent shifts in what called the geography of ‘Big Things’, meaning the contemporary functions and adaptability of modern city centre architecture. We periodise the three styles conventionally into the fashionable ‘Starchitecture’ of the 1990s, the repurposed ‘Agritecture’ of the 2000s and the parodising ‘Parkitecture’ of the 2010s. Starchitecture was the form of new architecture coinciding with the rise of neo-liberalism in its brief era of global urban competitiveness prevalent in the 1990s. After the Great Financial Crash of 2007–2008, the market for high-rise emblems of iconic, thrusting, skyscrapers and giant downtown and suburban shopping malls waned and online shopping and working from home destroyed the main rental values of the CBD. In some illustrious cases, ‘Agritecture’ caused re-purposed office blocks and other CBD accompaniments to be re-purposed as settings for high-rise urban farming, especially aquaponics and hydroponic horticulture. Now, COVID-19 has further undermined traditional CBD property markets, causing some administrations to decide to bulldoze their ‘deadmalls’ and replace them with urban prairie landscapes, inviting the designation ‘Parkitecture’ for the bucolic results. This paper presents an account of these transitions with reference to questions raised by urban cultural scholars such as Jane M. Jacobs and Jean Gottmann to figure out answers in time and space to questions their work poses. Full article

The humanitarian sector has gone through a major shift toward injection of cash into vulnerable communities as its core modality. On this trajectory toward direct currency injection, something new has happened: namely the empowerment of communities to create their own local currencies, a tool known as Complementary Currency systems. This study mobilizes the concepts of endogenous regional development, import substitution and local market linkages as elaborated by Albert Hirschman and Jane Jacobs, to analyze the impact of a group of Complementary Currencies instituted by Grassroots Economics Foundation and the Red Cross in Kenya. The paper discusses humanitarian Cash and Voucher Assistance programs and compares them to a Complementary Currency system using Grassroots Economics as a case study. Transaction histories recorded on a blockchain and network visualizations show the ability of these Complementary Currencies to create diverse production capacity, dense local supply chains, and data for measuring the impact of humanitarian currency transfers. Since Complementary Currency systems prioritize both cooperation and localization, the paper argues that Complementary Currencies should become one of the tools in the Cash and Voucher Assistance toolbox. 3D imaging in animal models, during development or in adults, facilitates the identification of structural morphological changes that cannot be achieved with traditional 2D histological staining. Through the reconstruction of whole embryos or a region-of-interest, specific changes are better delimited and can be easily quantified. We focused here on high-resolution episcopic microscopy (HREM), and its potential for visualizing and quantifying the organ systems of normal and genetically altered embryos and adult organisms. Although the technique is based on episcopic images, these are of high resolution and are close to histological quality. The images reflect the tissue structure and densities revealed by histology, albeit in a grayscale color map. HREM technology permits researchers to take advantage of serial 2D aligned stacks of images to perform 3D reconstructions. Three-dimensional visualization allows for an appreciation of topology and morphology that is difficult to achieve with classical histological studies. The nature of the data lends itself to novel forms of computational analysis that permit the accurate quantitation and comparison of individual embryos in a manner that is impossible with histology. Here, we have developed a new HREM prototype consisting of the assembly of a Leica Biosystems Nanocut rotary microtome with optics and a camera. We describe some examples of applications in the prenatal and adult lifestage of the mouse to show the added value of HREM for phenotyping experimental cohorts to compare and quantify structure volumes. At prenatal stages, segmentations and 3D reconstructions allowed the quantification of neural tissue and ventricular system volumes of normal brains at E14.5 and E16.5 stages. 3D representations of normal cranial and peripheric nerves at E15.5 and of the normal urogenital system from stages E11.5 to E14.5 were also performed. We also present a methodology to quantify the volume of the atherosclerotic plaques of ApoEtm1Unc/tm1Unc mutant mice and illustrate a 3D reconstruction of knee ligaments in adult mice. Full article

The paper presents a method to operationalize Jan Gehl’s questions for public space into metrics to map Russian monotowns’ urban life in 2017. With the use of social media data, it becomes possible to scale Gehl’s approach from the survey of small urban areas to the analysis of entire cities while maintaining the human scale’s resolution. When underperforming public spaces are detected, we propose a matrix for urban design interventions using Jane Jacobs’ typologies for good city life. Furthermore, this method could be deployed to improve the conditions of public spaces in Russian monotowns through a series of architectural briefs for design competitions and urban design guidelines for local administrations.
