Nudging Safety in Elementary School Zones: A Pilot Study on a Road Sticker Intervention to Enhance Children’s Dismounting Behavior at Zebra Crossings

In this pilot study, the crossing behavior of elementary school students commuting on bicycles was investigated with the objective of enhancing safety around pedestrian crossings within school zones. With a noticeable increase in crashes involving young cyclists near schools, this research assessed the effectiveness of visual nudges in the form of red strips displaying “CYCLISTS DISMOUNT” instructions. Initial observations indicated a lack of compliance with dismounting regulations. After the initial observations, a specific elementary school was selected for the implementation of the nudging intervention and additional pre- (N = 91) and post-intervention (N = 71) observations. The pre-intervention observations again revealed poor adherence to the regulations requiring cyclists to dismount at specific points. Following our targeted intervention, the post-intervention observations marked an improvement in compliance. Indeed, the visual nudge effectively communicated the necessity of dismounting at a critical location, leading to a higher rate of adherence among cyclists (52.74% pre-intervention, 97.18% post-intervention). Although it also indirectly affected the behavior of the accompanying adult, who more often held hands with their children while crossing, this effect was weaker than the direct effect on dismounting behavior (20.88% pre-intervention, 39.44% post-intervention). The findings of the current pilot study underscore the possible impact of nudging on behavior and advocate for a combined approach utilizing physical nudges to bolster safety within school zones. Follow-up research, including, for instance, multiple sites, long-term effects, or children traveling alone, is called for. Full article

This paper presents a novel multi-sensor system for enhanced maneuver analysis in Olympic dinghy sailing. In the ILCA class, there is an increasing demand for precise in-field measurement and analysis of physical properties beyond well-established velocity and course metrics. The low-cost setup presented in this study consists of a combination of commercially available sensor systems, such as the AdMos sensor for IMU and GNSS measurement, in combination with custom measurement systems for rudder and mast rotations using fully waterproofed potentiometers. Data streams are synchronized using GNSS time stamping for streamlined analysis. The resulting analysis presents a selection of 12 upwind tacks, with corresponding path overlays, detailed timeseries data, and performance metrics. The system has demonstrated the value of extended data analysis of in situ data with an elite ILCA 7 sailor. The addition of rudder and mast rotations has enabled enhanced analysis of on-water maneuvers for single-handed Olympic dinghies like the ILCA 7, on a level of detail previously reserved for simulated environments. Recent Trends in Surgical Strategies of Early-Stage Gallbladder Cancer: A Narrative Review

Background/Objectives: Gallbladder cancer (GBC) is a lethal malignancy curable only by surgical resection in early stages (Tis, T1, T2). Significant controversy exists regarding the optimal extent of surgery. This review summarizes recent trends and evidence on surgical strategies for Tis, T1, and T2 GBC to guide practice and research. Methods: This narrative review synthesizes recent literature on surgical management of Tis, T1a, T1b, and T2 GBC based on American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th edition staging. It examines simple vs. extended cholecystectomy (simple cholecystectomy (SC) vs. extended/radical cholecystectomy (EC/RC)), the role of lymphadenectomy (LND) and hepatectomy, and minimally invasive surgery (MIS). Results: Simple cholecystectomy is curative for Tis/T1a GBC. For T1b, regional LND is essential for staging/potential benefit, especially examining ≥5–6 nodes. Tumor size is critical; SC alone may suffice for T1b < 1 cm (low lymph node metastasis (LNM) risk), while EC/RC with LND is indicated for ≥1 cm (higher LNM risk). Routine hepatectomy for T1b lacks survival support. For T2 GBC, mandatory regional LND (≥6 nodes) is required for both T2a and T2b substages due to high LNM rates; T2b has higher LNM than T2a. Routine hepatectomy for T2 is debated; evidence suggests no routine benefit for T2a beyond LND, with conflicting findings for T2b. R0 resection is paramount. MIS is feasible for early stages in experienced hands. Conclusions: Management of early GBC is moving towards risk stratification. SC is standard for Tis/T1a. Adequate regional LND is crucial for T1b (especially ≥1 cm) and mandatory for T2 GBC. Routine hepatectomy, particularly for T2b, remains controversial. This paper presents the expected and unexpected, but typically substituent-dependent, ferrocene-catalyzed DDQ-mediated oxidative transformations of a series of 5,8-bis(methylthio)-1-aryl-1,2-dihydropyridazino[4,5-d]pyridazines and 8-(3,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrazol-1-yl)-5-(methylthio)-1-aryl-1,2-dihydropyridazino[4,5-d]pyridazines. Under noncatalytic conditions the reactions were sluggish, mainly producing a substantial amount of undefined tarry materials; nevertheless, the ferrocene-catalyzed reactions of the 5,8-bis(methylthio)-substituted precursors gave the aromatic products the expected aromatic products in low yields. Their formation was accompanied by ring transformations proceeding via aryne-generating fragmentation/Diels–Alder (DA)/N2-releasing retro Diels–Alder (rDA) sequence to construct arene-fused phthalazines. On the other hand, neither the noncatalytic nor the catalytic reactions of the 8-pyrazolyl-5-methylthio-substituted dihydroaromatics yielded the expected aromatic products. Instead, depending on their substitution pattern, the catalytic reactions of these pyrazolyl-substituted precursors also led to the formation of dearylated arene-fused phthalazines competing with an unprecedented multistep fragmentation sequence terminated by the hydrolysis of cationic intermediates to give 4-(methylthio)pyridazino[4,5-d]pyridazin-1(2H)-one and the corresponding 3,5-dimethyl-1-aryl-1H-pyrazole. When 0.6 equivalents of DDQ were applied in freshly absolutized THF, a representative pyrazolyl-substituted model underwent an oxidative coupling to give a dimer formed by the interaction of the cationic intermediate, and a part of the N-nucleophilic precursor remained intact. A systematic computational study was conducted on these intriguing reactions to support their complex mechanisms proposed on the basis of the structures of the isolated products. Full article

From Green to Adaptation: How Does a Green Business Environment Shape Urban Climate Resilience?

Strengthening climate resilience constitutes a foundational approach through which cities adapt to climate change and mitigate associated environmental risks. However, research on the influence of economic policy environments on climate resilience remains limited. Guided by institutional theory and dynamic capability theory, this study employs a panel dataset comprising 272 Chinese cities at the prefecture level and above, covering the period from 2009 to 2023. It constructs a composite index framework for evaluating the green business environment (GBE) and urban climate resilience (UCR) using the entropy weight method. Employing a two-way fixed-effect regression model, it examined the impact of GBE optimization on UCR empirically and also explored the underlying mechanisms. The results show that improvements in the GBE significantly enhance UCR, with green innovation (GI) in technology functioning as an intermediary mechanism within this relationship. Moreover, climate policy uncertainty (CPU) exerts a moderating effect along this transmission pathway: on the one hand, it amplifies the beneficial effect of the GBE on GI; on the other hand, it hampers the transformation of GI into improved GBEs. The former effect dominates, indicating that optimizing the GBE becomes particularly critical for enhancing UCR under high CPU. To eliminate potential endogenous issues, this paper adopts a two-stage regression model based on the instrumental variable method (2SLS). The above conclusion still holds after undergoing a series of robustness tests. This study reveals the mechanism by which a GBE enhances its growth through GI. By incorporating CPU as a heterogeneous factor, the findings suggest that governments should balance policy incentives with environmental regulations in climate resilience governance. Furthermore, maintaining awareness of the risks stemming from climate policy volatility is of critical importance. By providing a stable and supportive institutional environment, governments can foster steady progress in green innovation and comprehensively improve urban adaptive capacity to climate change. Freezing and thawing cycles significantly affect the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of soils, posing detrimental challenges for infrastructures in cold climates. This study develops and validates a coupled Thermal–Hydraulic–Mechanical (THM) model using COMSOL Multiphysics (Version 6.3) to demonstrate the complexities of vapor and water flux, heat transport, frost heave, and vertical stress build-up in unsaturated soils. The analysis focuses on fine sand, sandy clay, and silty clay by examining their varying susceptibilities to frost action. Silty clay generated the highest amount of frost heave and steepest vertical stress gradients due to its high-water retention and strong capillary forces. Fine sand, on the other hand, produced a minimal amount of frost heave and a polarized vertical stress distribution. The study also revealed that vapor flux is more noticeable in freezing fine sand, while silty clay produces the greatest water flux between the frozen and unfrozen zones. The study also assesses the impact of soil properties including the saturated hydraulic conductivity, the particle thermal conductivity, and particle heat capacity on the frost-induced phenomena. Findings show that reducing the saturated hydraulic conductivity has a greater impact on mitigating frost heave than other variations in thermal properties. Silty clay is most affected by these changes, particularly near the soil surface, while fine sand shows less noticeable responses. Full article

As the use of data models and data science techniques in industrial processes grows exponentially, the question arises: to what extent can these techniques impact the future of manufacturing processes? This article examines the potential future impacts of these models based on an assessment of existing trends and practices. The drive towards digital-oriented manufacturing and cyber-based process optimization and control has brought many opportunities and challenges. On one hand, issues of data acquisition, handling, and quality for proper database building have become important subjects. On the other hand, the reliable utilization of this available data for optimization and control has inspired much research. This research work discusses the fundamental question of how far these models can help design and/or improve existing processes, highlighting their limitations and challenges. Furthermore, it reviews state-of-the-art practices and their successes and failures in material process applications, including casting, extrusion, and additive manufacturing (AM), and presents some quantitative indications. Background/Objectives: Children with severe physical and communication disabilities face many challenges. They have very limited opportunities for upright, hands-free, self-initiated mobility. Current findings in neuroscience and theories on child development suggest that self-initiated mobility can have positive cascading effects on various developmental areas, including language and communication. This study was conducted to examine the current use of hands-free support walkers with children who have severe physical and communication disabilities and use augmentative and alternative communication and to identify the benefits and problems perceived by their parents and professionals from different disciplines. Methods: Online surveys were utilized to collect information from 127 participants, including 31 parents and 96 professionals or paraprofessionals. Results: The participants reported that these children could perform various motor activities in the hands-free support walkers to achieve different goals. Benefits identified by both parents and professionals included providing a way to exercise and stay active, improving motor control, enhancing independence, and bringing enjoyment. Professionals also observed positive impacts on communication, vocalization, use of eye contact, and problem solving. Conclusions: Results suggest that children with severe physical and communication disabilities can benefit from the upright, hands-free, self-initiated mobility provided by hands-free support walkers. Clinical implications and needs for future research are discussed. Full article

Introduction: Primary hyperparathyroidism (pHPT) is an endocrine disorder characterized by excessive parathyroid hormone production, typically due to adenomas, hyperplasia, or carcinoma. Preoperative imaging plays a critical role in guiding surgical planning, particularly in selecting patients for minimally invasive procedures. While first-line imaging techniques, such as ultrasound and 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy, are standard, advanced second-line imaging modalities like 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT (FCH-PET) and four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT) have emerged as valuable tools when initial diagnostics are inconclusive. Methods: This article provides an updated review and recommendations of the role of these advanced imaging techniques in localizing parathyroid adenomas. Results: FCH-PET has shown exceptional sensitivity (94% per patient, 96% per lesion) and is particularly useful in detecting small or ectopic adenomas. Despite its higher sensitivity, it can yield false positives, particularly in the presence of thyroid disease. On the other hand, 4D-CT offers detailed anatomical imaging, aiding in the identification of parathyroids in challenging cases, including recurrent disease and ectopic glands. Studies suggest that FCH-PET and 4D-CT exhibit similar diagnostic performance and could be complementary in preoperative planning of most difficult situations. Conclusions: This article also emphasizes a multimodal approach, where initial imaging is followed by advanced techniques only in cases of uncertainty. Although 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT is favored as a second-line option, 4D-CT remains invaluable for its high spatial resolution and ability to guide surgery in complex cases. Despite limitations in evidence, these imaging modalities significantly enhance the accuracy of parathyroid localization, contributing to more targeted and minimally invasive surgery. Full article

Objectives: Anisakidosis is an emerging, cosmopolitan, and underdiagnosed parasitic disease caused by the accidental ingestion of third-stage anisakid larvae when consuming raw or improperly prepared seafood. Within hours to days of consuming infected raw seafood, patients may develop acute gastrointestinal symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or constipation, as live anisakid larvae attach to the gastric, or more rarely, the intestinal mucosa. Cases have been reported in which the nematodes succeed at migrating from the stomach upwards to the esophagus and then the oral cavity. Therefore, the purpose of the present literature review is to collect, analyze, summarize and present the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data concerning anisakidosis localized inside the oral cavity. Methods: An electronic search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Ovid databases was performed with them being accessed for the last time on 29 March 2025. Results: The present literature review identified 13 individual case reports of oral mucosa anisakidosis, which were published in the period 1971–2022. Conclusions: Our review aims to summarize the relevant epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, parasitological, therapeutic, and prognostic data regarding the oral localization of anisakidosis, a helminthic infection caused by the accidental ingestion of live anisakid larvae and which manifests mainly with gastrointestinal symptoms. Its localization in the oral mucosa appears to be exceptionally rare and, in most cases, occurs with a characteristic clinical picture, defined by the onset of acute mouth or throat pain immediately after the consumption of raw seafood and by the observation of one or more larvae, either lying on or penetrating the oral mucosa. Despite its rarity, dental health professionals and other clinicians should be aware of this disease and the possibility of its intraoral localization, since environmental factors on the one hand, and the adoption of foreign dietary habits on the other, will likely make anisakidosis a much more common disease worldwide in the near future. The current study provided a comprehensive multiparameter assessment of hollow fibre membrane modules connected in parallel and series in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) for the first time. The configurations were evaluated under varying process parameters such as temperature (50–70 °C), flow rates (22.1–32.3 mL·s−1), magnesium concentration as scalant (1.0–4.0 g·L−1), and flow direction (co-current and counter-current), assessing their influence on temperature gradients (∆T), flux and pH stability, salt rejection, and crystallisation. Interestingly, the parallel module configuration maintained high operational stability with uniform flux and temperature differences (∆T) even at high recovery factors (>75%). On one hand, the serial configuration experienced fluctuating ∆T caused by thermal and concentration polarisation, causing an early crystallisation (abrupt drop in feed conductivity). Intensified polarisation effects with accelerated crystallisation increased the membrane risk of wetting, particularly at high recovery factors. Despite these changes, the salt rejection remained relatively high (99.9%) for both configurations across all tested conditions. The findings revealed that acidification trends caused by MgSO4 were configuration-dependent, where the parallel setup-controlled rate of pH collapse. This study presented a novel framework connecting membrane module architecture to mass and heat transfer phenomena, providing a transformative DCMD module configuration design in water desalination. These findings not only provide the critical knowledge gaps in DCMD module configurations but also inform optimisation of MD water desalination to achieve high recovery and stable operation conditions under realistic brine composition. Personalized Language Training and Bi-Hemispheric tDCS Improve Language Connectivity in Chronic Aphasia: A fMRI Case Study

Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has emerged as a promising neuromodulatory tool for language rehabilitation in chronic aphasia. However, the effects of bi-hemispheric, multisite stimulation remain largely unexplored, especially in people with chronic and treatment-resistant language impairments. The goal of this study is to look at the effects on behavior and brain activity of an individualized language training program that combines bi-hemispheric multisite anodal tDCS with personalized language training for Albert, a patient with long-standing, treatment-resistant non-fluent aphasia. Methods: Albert, a right-handed retired physician, had transcortical motor aphasia (TCMA) subsequent to a left-hemispheric ischemic stroke occurring more than six years before the operation. Even after years of traditional treatment, his expressive and receptive language deficits remained severe and persistent despite multiple rounds of traditional therapy. He had 15 sessions of bi-hemispheric multisite anodal tDCS aimed at bilateral dorsal language streams, administered simultaneously with language training customized to address his particular phonological and syntactic deficiencies. Psycholinguistic evaluations were performed at baseline, immediately following the intervention, and at 1, 2, 3, and 6 months post-intervention. Resting-state fMRI was conducted at baseline and following the intervention to evaluate alterations in functional connectivity (FC). Results: We noted statistically significant enhancements in auditory sentence comprehension and oral reading, particularly at the 1- and 3-month follow-ups. Neuroimaging showed decreased functional connectivity (FC) in the left inferior frontal and precentral regions (dorsal stream) and in maladaptive right superior temporal regions, alongside increased FC in left superior temporal areas (ventral stream). This pattern suggests that language networks may be reorganizing in a more efficient way. There was no significant improvement in phonological processing, which may indicate reduced connectivity in the left inferior frontal areas. Conclusions: This case underscores the potential of combining individualized, network-targeted language training with bi-hemispheric multisite tDCS to enhance recovery in chronic, treatment-resistant aphasia. The convergence of behavioral gains and neuroplasticity highlights the importance of precision neuromodulation approaches. However, findings are preliminary and warrant further validation through controlled studies to establish broader efficacy and sustainability of outcomes. Full article

Predicting De-Handing Point in Bananas Using Crown Morphology and Interpretable Machine Learning

Banana de-handing is a critical yet labor-intensive step in postharvest processing, with current manual methods resulting in high costs and occupational risks. This study addresses the automation of de-handing point localization by integrating high-resolution 3D scanning and morphometric analysis of banana crowns with machine learning techniques. A total of 210 crown samples were analyzed to extract key morphological features, including inner arc length (Li), inner arc radius (Ri), outer arc radius (Ro), and the distance between inner and outer arcs (Doi), among others. Four machine learning algorithms, namely, Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Gradient Boosted Decision Trees (GBDT), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), and Random Forest (RF), were developed to predict the target radius (Rt) and target distance (Dti) of the de-handing point. The RF models achieved the optimal predictive performance on the testing set, with the following results: for Rt, R2 = 0.95, MAE = 1.50, and RMSE = 1.94; for Dti, R2 = 0.91, MAE = 1.33, and RMSE = 1.66. A Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) analysis revealed that Li, Ri, and Ro were the most influential features for Rt, while Doi was the most important for Dti. Notably, feature threshold effects were observed, with limited gains in prediction accuracy beyond specific morphological values. These results provide a quantitative foundation for vision-guided automated de-handing systems, advancing intelligent and efficient banana postharvest management. Full article

Stomata, highly specialized structures that evolved on the aerial surfaces of plants, play a crucial role in regulating hydration, mitigating the effects of abiotic stress. Stomatal lineage development involves a series of coordinated events, such as initiation, stem cell proliferation, and cell fate determination, ultimately leading to the differentiation of guard cells. While core transcriptional regulators and signaling pathways controlling stomatal cell division and fate determination have been characterized over the past twenty years, the molecular mechanisms linking stomatal development to dynamic environmental cues remain poorly understood. Therefore, stomatal development is considered an active and compelling frontier in plant biology research. On the one hand, this review aims to provide an understanding of the molecular networks governing stomatal ontogenesis, which relies on the activation and function of the transcription factors SPEECHLESS (SPCH), MUTE, and FAMA; the EPF–TMM and ERECTA receptor systems; and downstream MAPK signaling. On the other hand, it synthesizes current discoveries of how hormonal signaling pathways regulate stomatal development in response to environmental changes. As the climate crisis intensifies, the understanding of the complex interplay between stress stimuli and key factors regulating stomatal development may reveal key mechanisms that enhance plant resilience under adverse environmental conditions. Background/Objectives: Growth prediction may be used by the clinical orthodontist in growing individuals for diagnostic purposes and for treatment planning. This process appraises chronological age and determines the degree of skeletal maturity to calculate residual growth. In developmental deviations, overlooking such diagnostic details might culminate in erroneous conclusions, unstable outcomes, recurrence, and treatment failure. The present review aims to systematically present and explain the available means for predicting growth in humans. Traditional, long-known, popular methods are discussed, and modern digital applications are described. Materials and methods: A search on PubMed and the gray literature up to May 2025 produced 69 eligible studies on future maxillofacial growth prediction without any orthodontic intervention. Results: Substantial variability exists in the studies on growth prediction. In young orthodontic patients, the study of the lateral cephalometric radiography and the subsequent calculation of planes and angles remain questionable for diagnosis and treatment planning. Skeletal age assessment is readily accomplished with X-rays of the cervical vertebrae and the hand–wrist region. Computer software is being implemented to improve the reliability of classic methodologies. Metal implants have been used in seminal growth studies. Biochemical methods and electromyography have been suggested for clinical prediction and for research purposes. Conclusions: In young patients, it would be of importance to reach conclusions on future growth with minimal distress to the individual and, also, reduced exposure to ionizing radiation. Nevertheless, the potential for comprehensive prediction is still largely lacking. It could be accomplished in the future by combining established methods with digital technology. Full article
