Background: Primary school teachers are experiencing unprecedented occupational stress due to technological demands, varied student needs, and the enduring psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although burnout research is extensive globally, evidence regarding Greek primary educators remains scarce, particularly in post-pandemic contexts where Mediterranean cultural values, economic constraints, and centralized governance may yield unique patterns. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined professional burnout among 102 primary school teachers in Achaia prefecture, Greece, during autumn 2022. The Greek-validated Maslach Burnout Inventory-Educators Survey assessed emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. The psychological impact of COVID-19 was evaluated alongside demographic and occupational factors. Analyses included descriptive statistics, nonparametric tests, correlation analyses, hierarchical clustering, and multiple regression models. Results: The sample exhibited mixed burnout profiles, with 42.2% indicating low emotional exhaustion (while 35.3% showed high levels) and 67.6% showing minimal depersonalization. Bivariate analysis revealed that the psychological burden of COVID-19 was significantly correlated with depersonalization (r = 0.339, p < 0.001) but not with emotional exhaustion (r = 0.078, ns) or personal achievement. However, multivariate regression controlling for demographic factors revealed a suppression effect: pandemic burden emerged as the strongest predictor of emotional exhaustion (β = 0.52, p < 0.001), while its association with depersonalization became non-significant. Cluster analysis identified four distinct profiles: Emotionally Strained (49.0%), Resilient (32.4%), Detached (15.7%), and At-Risk (2.9%). Gender significantly predicted emotional exhaustion (model R² = 0.136), while rural location and years of service predicted depersonalization (model R² = 0.225). Conclusions: Greek primary school teachers demonstrated remarkable resilience after the pandemic, maintaining professional effectiveness despite emotional challenges. The suppression effect observed for COVID-19 burden—significantly associated with depersonalization bivariately but with emotional exhaustion multivariately—highlights the importance of examining both direct and demographically mediated stress pathways. The dimensional independence observed, particularly personal achievement's resilience to external stressors, contests unified burnout models and indicates that targeted interventions addressing specific burnout dimensions may be more effective than holistic approaches. COVID-19 brought on health-related stressors which have not been previously explored as risks for intimate partner violence (IPV). The current study applies the ABCX model of family stress to assess whether health-related stressors were associated with more severe IPV and the mediational role of resources (i.e., negotiation skills, emotion regulation skills, social support) and perceptions (i.e., meaning in life, loneliness) in these relationships. Using MTURK, adults across the United States participated in an anonymous online survey. Participants were allocated to groups according to relationship status and IPV presence and severity. A series of multiple mediation analyses was conducted to investigate if personal resources and perception of circumstance mediated the relationship between health-related stressors and IPV severity. The findings indicate a positive association between COVID-19 health-related stressors and IPV severity. These relationships were primarily mediated by increased attempts to suppress emotional expression, feelings of loneliness, and search for meaning in one’s life. The findings support the applicability of the ABCX models to understanding IPV, suggesting that the health-related stressors should be considered as risk factors for IPV, and identify explanatory mechanisms that could also be targets for intervention. Background and Objectives: Public health emergencies, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, significantly impact individuals and families, particularly in educational settings. School closures and changes in daily routines reduced students’ opportunities for learning and social interaction, affecting their mental health. Caregivers also faced increased responsibilities and stressors. This study aimed to evaluate a predictive model of mental health outcomes—specifically posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSSs) and posttraumatic growth (PTG)—in Chilean schoolchildren and their caregivers. Materials and Methods: A total of 489 students (48% female sex; aged 10–17) from educational communities in various Chilean cities participated in the study, along with their caregivers (aged 21–69; 86.5% female), including mothers, fathers, and guardians. Mental health variables were assessed through self-report instruments. Hierarchical linear regression and path analyses were used to evaluate predictive models for PTSSs and PTG in students. Results: The model predicting PTSSs in students was significant. Key predictors included female sex, aggressive behavior, coping strategies such as keeping problems to oneself, cognitive avoidance, and intrusive rumination, and caregiver PTSSs. The model for PTG was also significant, with predictors including active problem-solving, communication, a positive attitude, and deliberate rumination. These results indicate distinct psychological processes underlying negative and positive outcomes following trauma. Conclusions: The findings underscore the complexity of mental health outcomes among school-aged children and the influence of caregiver well-being. The study highlights the importance of supporting both students and caregivers through targeted interventions. Multi-level strategies addressing emotional regulation, communication, and coping mechanisms may foster resilience and psychological growth in educational communities facing the aftermath of public health emergencies. Assessing the increased impacts/risks of urban heatwaves generated by stressors such as a pandemic period, such as the one experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic, is complicated by the lack of comprehensive information that allows for an analytical determination of the alteration produced on climate risks/impacts. The assessment of the increased impacts/risks of urban heatwaves generated by stressors such as those due to the presence of a pandemic is complicated by the lack of comprehensive information that allows for the functional determination of the increased impacts/risks due to such stressors. On the other hand, it is essential for decision makers to understand the complex interactions between climate risks and the environmental and socioeconomic conditions generated by pandemics in an urban context, where specific restrictions on citizens’ livability are in place to protect their health. This study aims to address this need by proposing a fuzzy multi-criteria decision-making framework in a GIS environment that intuitively allows experts to assess the increase in heatwave risk factors for the population generated by pandemics. This assessment is accomplished by varying the values in the pairwise comparison matrices of the criteria that contribute to the construction of physical and socioeconomic vulnerability, exposure, and the hazard scenario. The framework was tested to assess heatwave impacts/risks on the population in the study area, which includes the municipalities of the metropolitan city of Naples, Italy, an urban area with high residential density where numerous summer heatwaves have been recorded over the last decade. The findings indicate a rise in impact/risks during pandemic times, particularly in municipalities with the greatest resident population density, situated close to Naples. Full article

Background: Depression and eating disorders (EDs) represent significant and often multiple public health concerns. Healthcare workers, including medical residents, were affected by several stressors that the COVID-19 pandemic has engendered and amplified, potentially exacerbating mental health issues. Despite this, limited evidence is available regarding the association between depressive symptoms and possible EDs among Public Health Residents (PHRs). Methods: A nationwide cross-sectional study, the ‘Public Health Residents Anonymous Survey in Italy (PHRASI),’ was conducted between June and July 2022. A total of 379 PHRs participated in this study, filling in a self-administered questionnaire which included the PHQ-9 for assessing depressive symptoms and the SCOFF (Sick, Control, One, Fat, Food) test as a screening tool for possible EDs. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated associations between sociodemographic and training/work-related factors, depressive symptoms, and EDs. Results: Overall, 40.6% of respondents screened positive for possible EDs. Depressive symptoms had a positive association with possible EDs (aOR = 2.76; 95% CI = 1.55–4.93). Other factors associated with higher ED odds included region of residence (aOR = 1.92; 95% CI = 1.06–3.47), intention to repeat the test for another postgraduate course (aOR = 3.22; 95% CI = 1.25–8.3), and working more than 40 h per week (aOR = 1.91; 95% CI = 1.19–3.07). Conversely, having more than one child (aOR = 0.32; 95% CI = 0.13–0.78) was associated with lower odds. Conclusions: The findings highlight a significant association between depressive symptoms and positive screening for possible EDs, underscoring the need for integrated mental health support and preventive interventions within medical residency programmes, especially in the context of public health crises. The COVID-19 pandemic had widespread psychological effects, prompting research into long-term impacts on mental health and identity development. This retrospective study examined how pandemic-related stress affected obsessive–compulsive symptoms (OCS) and generalized anxiety symptoms across three timepoints, prior to the pandemic (2019–February 2020), during the height of the pandemic (March 2020–2022), and the present (within the past month), and how changes in these symptoms relates to identity. The sample consisted of undergraduate students (N = 476) who completed an anonymous online survey battery. Indices of psychological “damage” and “recovery” showed although OCS levels returned to baseline in the current period, anxiety levels remained elevated. COVID-related stress predicted higher OCS and anxiety symptoms across timepoints. Greater symptom damage was associated with more identity disturbance, while recovery from anxiety was related to reduced identity disturbance. Recovery from OCS was uniquely related to higher identity consolidation. These findings suggest the psychological toll of the pandemic extends beyond clinical symptoms, impacting foundations of identity. Although some psychological recovery has occurred, lingering anxiety symptoms may continue to affect developmental outcomes. Further research is needed to understand mechanisms that support long-term recovery and identity formation in the wake of large-scale stressors like the COVID-19 pandemic. Full article

Background/Objectives: While nurses showed a willingness to work during the pandemic and wartime, little is understood about how they managed the conflict between their roles as caregivers and personal or family obligations. They are deemed “essential workers,” risking their safety to fulfill their duties. Objectives: This study aims to explore the lived experience of nurses during COVID-19 and wartime, delving deeper into their emotional and moral experiences, providing insights for nurses and nursing management about how nurses negotiate dilemmas. Methods: A focused interpretive, hermeneutic, phenomenological approach was employed. From December 2022 to January 2023, ten hospital-based nurses from two hospitals were purposively sampled for in-depth, semi-structured interviews, which were transcribed and analyzed. The study was approved by the University Ethics Committee (31102022). Results: The essence of “ Moral Conflicts of Dual Identity and Dual Allegiance” revealed profound moral and emotional struggles among nurses. Four key themes emerged: (1) Moral Stressors and Identity Negotiation, (2) Competing Responsibilities and Ethical Double-binds, (3) Virtual and Practical Wisdom in Crises, (4) Responses of Stress and Erosion of Support Conclusions: Understanding nurses’ ethical dilemmas is essential for healthcare leadership. Leaders must make it a priority for workplace safety for their nurses. In wartime, it is not obvious that the workplace is unsafe; leaders must foster open dialog and support systems in response to these crises. This study highlights the significance of peer support, emphasizing the need for policies that address the complex moral challenges nurses face daily. Full article

Teacher occupational health is a critical issue worldwide that COVID-19 has worsened. While previous research has highlighted the impact of chronic work-related stress and limited personal resources on burnout, much of this research relies on cross-sectional data that do not capture how these effects develop over time. Additionally, the role of positive organizational factors remains underexplored. Our study examined burnout trajectories among 101 Portuguese elementary teachers (94.1% women, M = 46.03 years, 85.6% enrollment rate) over five data collection points spanning the 1st and 2nd COVID-19 waves (2019–2021) and investigated the impact of organizational climate on teacher burnout indicators. Main work-related stressors were identified through an open-ended question. Trajectories of occupational stress and burnout were analyzed using independent ANOVAs, and moderation analyses tested the relationship between organizational climate, occupational stress, and burnout indicators. Results showed a significant drop in perceived personal accomplishment during the first lockdown. Key stressors included greater job demands and more strained interpersonal relationships. Organizational climate significantly moderated the effect of work-related stress on emotional exhaustion, while having a positive main effect on personal accomplishment. This research contributes to a strengthened theoretical understanding of burnout as a dynamic, context-sensitive process, offering new empirical evidence, especially in underrepresented educational systems like Portugal. It emphasizes the importance of addressing contextual factors when working to reduce teacher burnout. Rethinking professional development and workplace relationships is essential for supporting teachers’ occupational health in today’s uncertain educational environments. Full article

Background/Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in unprecedented societal changes globally and negatively impacted the psychosocial health of pregnant women. This study aimed to explore how direct, indirect, and unrelated factors associated with the COVID-19 pandemic influenced stress levels among pregnant women. Methods: This interpretivist qualitative study employed open-ended survey questions to capture the lived experiences of 313 pregnant women in the third trimester residing in Florida between January and March 2022, during the Omicron surge. Thematic analysis was conducted, guided by the Stress and Coping Theory and the Stress Buffering Theory. Results: Participants described a range of stressors directly and indirectly related to the COVID-19 pandemic that affected pregnant women. Themes related to increased stress were (1) fear, worry, and anxiety related to COVID-19 infection, (2) fear, worry, and anxiety related to preparedness for birth/baby due to pandemic restrictions, (3) prevention concerns associated with COVID-19, (4) lack of social support, (5) return to normalcy, (6) health-related social needs, (7) physical health issues, and (8) navigating conflict and grief. Conversely, stress-reducing factors were (1) preventive measures during the pandemic, (2) coping strategies, (3) not having to work, and (4) social support. Conclusions: Pregnant women experienced heightened stress due to a complex interplay of factors related directly or indirectly to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important that maternity care, mental health and health-related social needs screenings and referrals, and tailored interventions are integrated into public health crises preparedness plans to limit the stress that pregnant women experience and support their well-being. The COVID-19 pandemic and its associated economic stressors have profoundly reshaped consumer eating behaviors, presenting an urgent and underexplored challenge for the academic community. This interdisciplinary review critically examines how these disruptions have influenced both food approach and food avoidance patterns, offering a structured analysis of eight key behavioral parameters: Hunger (H), Food Responsiveness (FR), Emotional Overeating (EOE), Enjoyment of Food (EF), Satiety Responsiveness (SR), Emotional Under Eating (EUE), Food Fussiness (FF), and Slowness in Eating (SE). Drawing on recent literature, we highlight significant shifts in these traits—such as heightened hedonic hunger, age-related changes in food preferences, and gender-specific emotional-satiety dynamics—underscoring the complex interplay between emotional states, physiological cues, and behavioral tendencies. Grounded in the systematic examination of peer-reviewed studies in the post-COVID period, this review offers a robust and comprehensive synthesis of current evidence. The novelty of this work lies in its integration of findings into targeted proposition statements for each parameter, visually supported by original flow charts. These culminate in the development of a “Consumers’ Eating Behavior Index”—a conceptual tool designed to guide researchers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers in understanding and responding to post-pandemic dietary transformations. By emphasizing the emotional and psychological dimensions of eating, this index offers a timely framework for designing tailored public health interventions that promote sustainable nutritional habits. This study calls for renewed academic attention to the behavioral consequences of global crises, positioning eating behavior research as a critical frontier in post-COVID recovery and resilience. Background: Medical education is highly demanding and often entails stress, pressure, and competition. Understanding what drives students’ satisfaction is essential to support learning and well-being. This study aims to identify factors associated with satisfaction with medical education among Polish medical students, focusing on motivation, personal circumstances, resilience, and the long-term impact of COVID-19. Methods: In a cross-sectional online survey, 334 students from years one, four, and six completed measures of satisfaction with medical studies (nineteen items), motivation (ten items), resilience (using the Brief Resilience Scale), self-rated health, financial situation, global life satisfaction, and study-related stress, plus eight items on COVID-19 impact. Associations were assessed using Spearman correlations and Mann–Whitney U tests. Results: Higher satisfaction was associated with intrinsic motivation (e.g., personal decision to study medicine or interest in medicine), more favorable personal circumstances (better health, financial situation, higher global life satisfaction, and lower stress), and greater individual resilience. Students reporting pandemic-related setbacks (knowledge gaps, reduced confidence, curtailed clinical exposure, and interpersonal skills) showed lower satisfaction with overall experience, relationships, theoretical and practical classes, and perceived future competence. Conclusions: Intrinsic motivation, resilience, and supportive personal circumstances were linked to higher satisfaction, whereas enduring pandemic disruptions coincided with lower satisfaction across domains. Targeted strategies that cultivate intrinsic motivation and resilience and address financial/health stressors and COVID-19 learning gaps may enhance student satisfaction. Full article

Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread effects on quality of life (QoL). This umbrella review aimed to synthesise review-level evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on QoL across the general population, including children, adolescents, adults, and older people. Methods: A systematic search of databases (MEDLINE (PubMed); EBSCOHost; Scopus; Google Scholar) and review repositories was conducted to identify systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and scoping reviews published between 2019 and 2025. Eligible reviews (2019–2025, English, peer-reviewed) included narrative, systematic and meta-analytic syntheses of quantitative, qualitative or mixed-methods evidence examining the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on quality of life in the general population, using validated QoL measures. The review followed Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for umbrella reviews, with data synthesised narratively by QoL domain and population group. Results: Nine reviews met the inclusion criteria, encompassing 272 primary studies. Most reported declines in QoL across psychological, physical, and social domains. Children and adolescents experienced reductions in emotional and social functioning. Working-age adults reported psychological strain linked to economic and health-related stressors, while older adults were vulnerable to isolation and reduced social QoL. Environmental and structural factors also influenced QoL. Sociodemographic disparities were observed, with lower QoL reported among women, younger individuals, and those with lower socioeconomic status. Conclusions: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with substantial declines in QoL across population groups, shaped by psychological, social, and structural factors. Findings highlight the importance of addressing social inequalities and enhancing resilience in future public health crises. Full article

Five years after the COVID-19 pandemic, namely, the biggest disruption to education in the last century, this article provides insights into the consequences it holds for teachers’ well-being, their (non)preparedness for and support needed in any such future disruptions in Slovenia. By utilising the Job Demands–Resources Model, insights are provided concerning job demands (stress) and job resources (support) on different levels (individual, micro, meso, macro, chrono) of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory. The importance of complementing large-scale, representative, quantitative data (from the Responses to Educational Disruption Survey (REDS)) with qualitative data obtained from two focus groups comprising eight teachers in total is demonstrated to gain a comprehensive understanding of teachers’ well-being during educational disruptions. This study confirms that the intertwining of different levels in Bronfenbrenner’s socio-ecological system explains job demands (sources of stress) and job resources (support for teacher well-being) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The majority of stressors at the time of the pandemic were identified on the micro level, whereas sources of support were primarily located on the individual and meso (school) levels. For any future educational disruptions, however, the most significant sources of support for teachers’ well-being are expected on the macro level (system and society). Full article

Perceptions and Use of Urban Green Spaces, Leading Pathways to Urban Resilience

This study examined residents’ perceptions, preferences, and experiences of urban green spaces in four regional units of the Region of Attica—West Athens, Central Athens, South Athens, and Piraeus—demonstrating how demographic diversity, urban morphology, and external stressors—such as extreme heat and the COVID-19 pandemic—shape green space use. The results show that, while green spaces are essential for health, well-being, and social cohesion, their distribution is uneven, which limits their availability (27.3%) and access (21.8%) to residents. Main concerns expressed by residents when visiting green spaces and open green spaces are poor maintenance (50.7%), lack of security (36.7%), and socially irresponsible behaviour (e.g., littering, vandalism) (32.8%). Extreme heat emerged as a major constraint on outdoor activities, particularly affecting women and the elderly. Household-associated outdoor areas (balconies, courtyards, and verandas) were highly valued (59.8%), highlighting the role of private green spaces in dense urban environments. Major metropolitan parks were the most visited and valued by residents for providing contact with nature (23.0%) and benefiting from stress relief (54.0%) while practicing their favourite activity, though their use was limited during heatwaves (30.3% of the residents do not visit). Most activities during and after the COVID-19 pandemic were reported unchanged, though reported increases in walking (34.3%) and park visits (28.3%) demonstrate the importance of green spaces in fostering urban resilience. However, the reported lack of engagement in gardening (48.0%), indoor plant care (41.2%) and bird/wildlife watching (58.3%) suggest missed opportunities for ecological and cultural enrichment. Overall, the study underscores the urgent need for integrated planning strategies to improve accessibility, maintenance, and equity in green space provision. By aligning with the sustainable development goals, the four regional units of the Region of Attica can transform its green infrastructure into an inclusive, resilient system that supports public health, social inclusion, and climate adaptation. Co-Created Psychosocial Resources to Support the Wellbeing of Children from Military Families: Usability Study

It is well known that early education and care lay the foundation for learning and wellbeing; however, resources available to support children with different life experiences can vary. For example, resources available to support early childhood educators working with young children from military families are particularly lacking. This is of concern, given that these children face a range of stressors in their daily lives. To address this gap, our interdisciplinary team used a co-creation framework to build a suite of free, online, psychosocial resources for the children and their parents, educators and support workers. To test the usability of the resources, we conducted an online survey with 83 Australian participants (parents, educators, and support workers) about their knowledge, skills and confidence in supporting these children and the children’s wellbeing. After the study, the participants were given access to the psychosocial resources for 6 to 12 months. Following this, an adapted survey was administered online (post-intervention) with 15 participants who had remained in the study during the COVID-19 pandemic. Quantitative data was analysed using cross-tabulation and descriptive statistics. Qualitative data was analysed using inductive thematic analysis. In our pre-intervention studies, 61% of parents and almost 26% of educators were only partially confident in understanding children’s responses to military-specific stressors. In contrast, in the current study, this number had fallen to under 7% (combined participant group), with perceived improvements noted in their views on the children’s wellbeing. These exploratory findings with a small sample size highlight the potential benefit of targeted programmes, professional development, and accessible resources for parents, educators, and support workers who assist children from military families.
