COPD and Comorbid Mental Health: Addressing Anxiety, and Depression, and Their Clinical Management

Anxiety and depression are common comorbidities in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which can contribute to increased morbidity, reduced quality of life, and worse clinical outcomes. Nevertheless, these psychological conditions remain largely overlooked. This narrative review includes studies published between 1983 and 2025 to synthesise the current evidence on the risk factors, clinical impacts, and therapeutic strategies for these comorbidities. While the exact mechanisms leading to their increased prevalence are not fully understood, growing evidence implicates a combination of biological (e.g., systemic inflammation), social (e.g., isolation and stigma), and behavioural (e.g., smoking and inactivity) factors. Despite current guidelines recommending the identification and management of these comorbidities in COPD, they are not currently included in COPD assessments. Undetected and unmanaged anxiety and depression have serious consequences, including poor self-management, non-adherence to medications, increased risk of exacerbation and hospitalisations, and even mortality; thus, there is a need to incorporate screening as part of COPD assessments. There is robust evidence showing that pulmonary rehabilitation, a core non-pharmacological intervention, can improve mood symptoms, enhance functional capacity, and foster psychosocial resilience. Psychological therapies such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, and supportive counselling have also demonstrated value in reducing emotional distress and improving coping mechanisms. Pharmacological therapies, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), are commonly prescribed in moderate to severe cases or when non-pharmacological approaches prove inadequate. However, the evidence for their efficacy in COPD populations is mixed, with concerns about adverse respiratory outcomes and high discontinuation rates due to side effects. There are also barriers to optimal care, including underdiagnosis, a lack of screening protocols, limited provider training, stigma, and fragmented multidisciplinary coordination. A multidisciplinary, biopsychosocial approach is essential to ensure early identification, integrated care, and improved outcomes for patients with COPD. Full article

Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are important and essential for use in our daily comfort, either in homes, work, or transportation. And it is crucial to study the air movement coming from the inlet diffuser for a better design to enhance thermal comfort and energy consumption. The primary objective of the presented work is to investigate the thermal comfort within a faculty office occupied by two faculty members using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methodology. First, an independent mesh study was performed to reduce the uncertainty related to the mesh size. In addition, the presented CFD approach was validated against available experimental data from the literature. Then, the effect of inlet air temperature and velocity on air movement and temperature distribution is investigated using Ansys Fluent. To be as reasonable as possible, the persons who occupy the office, lights, windows, tables, the door, and computers are accounted for in the CFD simulation. After that, the Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) was evaluated at three different locations inside the room, and the approximate total energy consumption was obtained for the presented cases. The CFD results showed that, for the presented cases, the sensation was neutral with the lowest energy consumption when the supply air velocity was 1 m/s and the temperature was 21 °C. Full article

This paper investigates weighted Milne-type (Mt) inequalities within the context of Riemann–Liouville (RL) fractional integrals. We establish multiple versions of these inequalities, applicable to different function categories, such as convex functions with differentiability properties, bounded functions, functions satisfying Lipschitz conditions, and those exhibiting bounded variation behavior. In particular, we present integral equalities that are essential to establish the main results, using non-negative weighted functions. The findings contribute to the extension of existing inequalities in the literature and provide a deeper understanding of their applications in fractional calculus. This work highlights the advantage of the established inequalities in extending classical results by accommodating a broader class of functions and yielding sharper bounds. It also explores potential directions for future research inspired by these findings. Full article

Digitalization is rapidly reshaping the global construction industry; however, its adoption in developing countries, such as Pakistan, remains limited and uneven. Hence, this study investigates and evaluates the current status of digital technology integration in Pakistan’s construction industry, with a primary focus on key tools, implementation challenges, and necessary policy interventions. Using a three-phase mixed-method approach involving a literature review, expert interviews, and a nationwide survey, this research identifies Building Information Modeling, Geographic Information Systems, and E-Procurement as essential technologies with strong potential to improve transparency, efficiency, and collaboration. However, adoption is hindered by a lack of awareness, limited technical expertise, and the absence of a cohesive national policy. This study also highlights that the private sector shows greater readiness compared to the public sector; however, systemic barriers persist across both sectors. Based on stakeholder insights, a three-part policy strategy was also proposed. This includes establishing a national regulatory framework, investing in capacity-building programs, and providing financial or institutional incentives to encourage the adoption of these measures. The findings emphasize that digitalization is not just a technical upgrade; it represents a pathway to improved governance and more efficient infrastructure delivery. With timely and coordinated policy action, the construction industry in Pakistan can align itself with global innovation trends and move toward a more sustainable and digitally empowered future. Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a major insect pest that severely affects various crops. Our study provides new insights by combining field efficacy trials with enzymatic analysis to evaluate the effects of emamectin benzoate mixtures with other insecticides (lufenuron, cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, and spinosad) against S. littoralis. The aim of our work was to investigate the effectiveness of five insecticides, i.e., emamectin benzoate, lufenuron, cypermethrin, chlorpyrifos, and spinosad, for controlling this pest under field conditions during two consecutive seasons (2023–2024). Each insecticide was applied individually at the recommended rate, while some were mixed with emamectin benzoate at half its recommended rate. The results indicated that emamectin benzoate was the most effective insecticide, followed by lufenuron. The joint action of emamectin benzoate (LC25) and its mixtures with other insecticides (chlorpyrifos, spinosad, cypermethrin, and lufenuron) at various concentrations (LC50) against second- and fourth-instar S. littoralis larvae was evaluated. Results showed additive effects with chlorpyrifos, lufenuron, and cypermethrin, while potentiation occurred with cypermethrin (LC50) and chlorpyrifos (LC50). Antagonistic effects were observed in the combination of emamectin benzoate with spinosad (LC25 and LC50). This study concluded that applying insecticides individually is more cost-effective for managing cotton leafworm infestations in cotton crops. Additionally, enzyme activity analysis showed significant changes in alpha-esterase, beta-esterase, carboxylesterase, acetylcholinesterase, and glutathione S-transferase levels in larvae treated with different insecticide combinations. The conservation of architectural heritage (AH) in regions threatened by natural and human-induced factors requires interdisciplinary approaches that integrate physical documentation with semantic modeling. This study introduces a comprehensive framework combining Historic Building Information Modeling (HBIM) with ontology-based modeling aligned with the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CIDOC CRM). Focusing on the Big Gate and adjacent curtain walls in Ibb, Yemen, where the gate is entirely lost, the study reconstructs the structure using historical photographs, eyewitness accounts, and analogical references. The methodology incorporates UAV and terrestrial photogrammetry surveys, point cloud generation, and semantic enrichment using Autodesk Revit V. 2024 and Protégé V. 5.5. Decay phenomena such as cracks, efflorescence, and disintegration were ontologically classified and spatially linked to the HBIM model, revealing deterioration patterns concerning historical phases and environmental exposure. The resulting system enables dynamic documentation, facilitates strategic conservation planning, and enhances data interoperability across heritage platforms. The proposed framework is transferable to other heritage sites, supporting both the conservation of extant structures and the reconstruction of lost ones. Full article

Electrocoagulation (EC) processes have emerged as an efficient solution for different inorganic and organic effluents. The main characteristics of this versatile process are its ease of operation and low sludge production. The literature indicates that EC can be successfully used as a single process or a step within a combined treatment system. If used in a combined system, this process could be employed as a pre-, a post-, or middle treatment step. Additionally, the EC process has been used in both continuous and batch modes. In most studies, EC has achieved significant improvements in the treated water quality and relatively low total energy consumption. This review presents a comprehensive evaluation and analysis of standalone and combined continuous EC processes. The influence of key operational parameters on continuous EC performance is thoroughly discussed. Furthermore, recent advancements in reactor design, modeling, and process optimization are addressed. The benefits of integrating other treatment processes with the EC process, such as advanced oxidation, membranes, chemical coagulation, and adsorption, are also evaluated. The performance of most standalone and combined EC processes used for organic pollutant treatment and published in the last 25 years is critically analyzed. This review is expected to give researchers many insights to improve their treatment scenario with recent and efficient environmental experiences, sustainability, and circular economy. The clearly presented information is expected to guide researchers in selecting efficient, cost-effective, and time-saving treatment alternatives. The findings ensure the considerable potential of continuous EC treatment processes for organic pollutants. However, more research is warranted to enhance process design, operational efficiency, scale-up, and economic viability. Full article

Wireless sensor networks have become a vital technology that is extensively applied across multiple industries, including agriculture, industrial operations, and smart cities, as well as residential smart homes and environmental monitoring systems. Security threats emerge in these systems through hidden routing-level attacks such as Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. The aim of this research was to develop a methodology for detecting security incidents in WSNs by conducting real-time analysis of Wormhole and Sinkhole attacks. Furthermore, the paper proposes a novel detection methodology combined with architectural enhancements to improve network robustness, measured by hop counts, delays, false data ratios, and route integrity. A real-time WSN infrastructure was developed using ZigBee and Global System for Mobile Communications/General Packet Radio Service (GSM/GPRS) technologies. To realistically simulate Wormhole and Sinkhole attack scenarios and conduct evaluations, we developed a modular cyber–physical architecture that supports real-time monitoring, repeatability, and integration of ZigBee- and GSM/GPRS-based attacker nodes. During the experimentation, Wormhole attacks caused the hop count to decrease from 4 to 3, while the average delay increased by 40%, and false sensor readings were introduced in over 30% of cases. Additionally, Sinkhole attacks led to a 27% increase in traffic concentration at the malicious node, disrupting load balancing and route integrity. The proposed multi-stage methodology includes data collection, preprocessing, anomaly detection using the 3-sigma rule, and risk-based decision making. Simulation results demonstrated that the methodology successfully detected route shortening, packet loss, and data manipulation in real time. Thus, the integration of anomaly-based detection with ZigBee and GSM/GPRS enables a timely response to security threats in critical WSN deployments. Full article

Background/Objectives: Pacifier use in infants has both beneficial and harmful implications, and dipping pacifiers in sweeteners is used by some parents to soothe infants. This study aimed to assess pacifier usage among mothers in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and to examine its association with child demographics, maternal socioeconomic status (SES), and maternal knowledge of the risks associated with dipping pacifiers in sweeteners. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among mothers of healthy children aged 2 to 4 years during community-awareness events in Jeddah. Participants completed a validated Arabic questionnaire covering pacifier use patterns, feeding practices, SES background, and knowledge regarding the adverse effects of pacifier sweetening. Results: A total of 1438 mothers participated. The mean age of children was 34.3 ± 10.7 months, with 441 children (30.7%) reported as pacifier users. Among them, 202 (45.8%) used pacifiers both during the day and at night. Most children (35.6%) discontinued use between 4 and 6 months of age. Only 6.1% of mothers reported adding sweeteners to pacifiers. Pacifier usage was significantly higher among first-born children (37.6%, p < 0.001), those who received both bottle- and breastfeeding (65.5%, p < 0.001), and children enrolled in nursery (62.1%, p = 0.007). Most mothers (75.6%) were aware of the link between sweetened pacifiers and dental caries, and 69.4% of those who had this knowledge avoided giving their child a pacifier (p = 0.077). Conclusions: Birth order, feeding practices, and nursery attendance are key predictors of pacifier use. Enhancing parental awareness and education may support early interventions to promote healthier oral and feeding habits in young children. Full article

This paper examines the impact of agent banking activities, a recent FinTech development, influencing the profitability and financial outcomes of commercial banks operating in Bangladesh, as agent banking has been receiving significant global attention due to its technology-driven approach, cost-effectiveness and easy accessibility, and broader coverage of the unbanked population. Through the application of penal data regression methods, the study estimates a random-effect model using panel data comprising quarterly observations from nine Bangladeshi commercial banks that maintained uninterrupted agent banking activities, covering both deposit mobilization and lending during the period from 2018Q1 to 2024Q4. The empirical findings indicate that credit disbursement by agent banks has a positive and statistically significant impact on bank profitability measures, return on assets (ROA), and return on equity (ROE). Similarly, the expansion of agent banking outlets positively and significantly influences ROA. Therefore, an appropriate agent banking policy aimed at increasing agent banking outlets using digital platforms based on FinTech is vital for ensuring positive growth in credit disbursement to achieve improved financial outcomes for the banking sector in a developing country like Bangladesh. Fast Anomaly Detection for Vision-Based Industrial Inspection Using Cascades of Null Subspace PCA Detectors

Anomaly detection in industrial imaging is critical for ensuring quality and reliability in automated manufacturing processes. While recently several methods have been reported in the literature that have demonstrated impressive detection performance on standard benchmarks, they necessarily rely on computationally intensive CNN architectures and post-processing techniques, necessitating access to high-end GPU hardware and limiting practical deployment in resource-constrained settings. In this study, we introduce a novel anomaly detection framework that leverages feature maps from a lightweight convolutional neural network (CNN) backbone, MobileNetV2, and cascaded detection to achieve notable accuracy as well as computational efficiency. The core of our method consists of two main components. First is a PCA-based anomaly detection module that specifically exploits near-zero variance features. Contrary to traditional PCA methods, which tend to focus on the high-variance directions that encapsulate the dominant patterns in normal data, our approach demonstrates that the lower variance directions (which are typically ignored) form an approximate null space where normal samples project near zero. However, the anomalous samples, due to their inherent deviations from the norm, lead to projections with significantly higher magnitudes in this space. This insight not only enhances sensitivity to true anomalies but also reduces computational complexity by eliminating the need for operations such as matrix inversion or the calculation of Mahalanobis distances for correlated features otherwise needed when normal behavior is modeled as Gaussian distribution. Second, our framework consists of a cascaded multi-stage decision process. Instead of combining features across layers, we treat the local features extracted from each layer as independent stages within a cascade. This cascading mechanism not only simplifies the computations at each stage by quickly eliminating clear cases but also progressively refines the anomaly decision, leading to enhanced overall accuracy. Experimental evaluations on MVTec and VisA benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed approach achieves superior anomaly detection performance (99.4% and 91.7% AUROC respectively) while maintaining a lower computational overhead compared to other methods. This framework provides a compelling solution for practical anomaly detection challenges in diverse application domains where competitive accuracy is needed at the expense of minimal hardware resources. Background: Visual impairment (VI) continues to be a significant global public health concern, especially in underserved rural communities. Objectives: This study aims to assess the prevalence of VI and refractive errors, as well as to identify the causes and risk factors associated with VI in Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in May 2024, included 929 participants aged 6–90 years from Duhknah, a rural area in Qassim Province, Saudi Arabia. Refractive errors (REs) were measured using a non-cycloplegic autorefractometer. Anterior and posterior eye examinations were performed using slit lamp biomicroscopy, direct ophthalmoscopy, and 90 D fundus biomicroscopy. VI was classified based on the International Classification of Diseases 11th revision (ICD-11), 2018. Results: The findings revealed that 671 (72.2%) participants had never undergone an eye examination. The overall prevalence of presenting VI was 370 (39.8%), comprising 21.6% with mild VI, 11.0% moderate, 4.1% severe, and 3.1% classified as blind. The prevalence of hyperopia, myopia, and astigmatism was 20.6%, 36.9%, and 13.2%, respectively. Uncorrected REs were the most common cause of VI (81.4%), followed by amblyopia (13.5%) and cataracts (3.2%). Regression analysis showed that women had 1.58 times higher odds of VI (p = 0.001). Participants with eye examinations for one year or more had 3.64 times higher odds (p < 0.001). Additionally, the risk of VI was significantly lower among older participants (ages 18–90) compared to younger ones (ages 6–17), (p < 0.001). Conclusions: This study found most participants had never had an eye exam, and VI was highly prevalent in the rural community. These findings underscore the need to strengthen primary eye care in rural Saudi Arabia. Regular vision screening, particularly for children, and better access to refractive services could significantly reduce VI and support the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Full article

This paper presents a scientometric review that provides a quantitative perspective on the evolution of Automation in Construction Journal (AICJ) research, emphasizing its developmental paths and emerging trends. The study aims to analyze the journal’s growth and citation impact over time. It also seeks to identify the most influential publications and the cooperation patterns among key contributors. Furthermore, the study explores the journal’s primary research themes and their evolution. Accordingly, 4084 articles were identified using the Web of Science (WoS) database and subjected to a multistep analysis using VOsviewer version 1.6.18 and Biblioshiny as software tools. First, the growth and citation of the publications over time are inspected and evaluated, in addition to ranking the most influential documents. Second, the co-authorship analysis method is applied to visualize the cooperation patterns between countries, organizations, and authors. Finally, the publications are analyzed using keyword co-occurrence and keyword thematic evolution analyses, revealing five major research clusters: (i) foundational optimization, (ii) deep learning and computer vision, (iii) building information modeling, (iv) 3D printing and robotics, and (v) machine learning. Additionally, the analysis reveals significant growth in publications (54.5%) and citations (78.0%) from 2018 to 2023, indicating the journal’s increasing global influence. This period also highlights the accelerated adoption of digitalization (e.g., BIM, computational design), increased integration of AI and machine learning for automation and predictive analytics, and rapid growth of robotics and 3D printing, driving sustainable and innovative construction practices. The paper’s findings can help readers and researchers gain a thorough understanding of the AICJ’s published work, aid research groups in planning and optimizing their research efforts, and inform editorial boards on the most promising areas in the existing body of knowledge for further investigation and development. Broad bean is one of the most important leguminous crops worldwide. However, its productivity is greatly affected by the infestation of Aphis fabae and Aphis craccivora (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The main objective of the current study was to identify the most susceptible phenological stages of the broad bean variety (Histal) against black aphids’ herbivory. This had been achieved through an evaluation of plant resistance mechanisms such as antixenosis and antibiosis. The results regarding an antixenosis test revealed that the four tested phenological stages of V. faba did not have a significant effect on the preference of A. craccivora and A. fabae towards the crop plant. Overall, a slightly higher number of adults settled on the three and four unfolded leaves’ stage of the crop plant. Similarly, the highest number of developed embryos were found in the four leaves’ stage of the crop, and the lowest in the second leaf stage. The adult body size of A. craccivora was slightly larger in the case of the three unfolded leaves. Furthermore, the maximum body size of A. fabae adults was recorded in the case of the first unfolded leaf stage crop. Linear correlations between the biological parameters for both species revealed only one significant relationship between developed and total embryos for A. craccivora. The results of the current study highlight the need to protect broad bean crops against infestations of black aphids, i.e., A. craccivora and A. fabae. This is essential for reducing direct damage and preventing the transmission of phytoviruses. However, future studies should aim to evaluate the susceptibility of all developmental phenological stages of the crop against black aphids to mitigate potential crop losses. Full article

Objectives: In view of a lack of evidence on the subject, we aimed to perform a scoping review to understand the impact of health education among people attending mass gatherings. Methods: We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) Guidelines. PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, and Cochrane Library were searched from inception to March 2025 to identify eligible studies. Observational and interventional studies that reported the impact of health education on any health-related outcome among those attending a mass gathering were considered. A narrative synthesis of review results was performed to gather evidence. Recommendations were framed in the context of this evidence. Results: Of the 1731 records, only 17 studies met the inclusion criteria. These included cross-sectional (n = 10), pre-post design (n = 3), quasi-experimental (n = 2), randomized controlled trial (n = 1), and ethnographic (n = 1) studies. These studies involved participants attending hajj, umrah, and basketball events. The current evidence on health education in mass gatherings is highly varied in its objectives, intervention strategy, educational plan, mode of delivery, design, and reported outcomes. Most studies agreed that health education should be initiated by the country of origin and continued throughout the event. It is recommended that this education should be tailored to patient needs based on age, medical condition, and other personal factors, and given in the local language for better acceptability. Such sources can be provided in various forms, either online or offline, as per the participant’s convenience. Conclusions: The current evidence on the effectiveness of health education during mass gatherings, particularly in pilgrimage settings, is varied and inconsistent. Participant-tailored health education should be provided, preferably in the local language, through convenient formats. Full article
