The erosion plot method (EPM) is the most accurate method for measuring total runoff and soil loss in the field, but it is expensive, time-consuming, and tedious to use, thereby limiting the scope of soil erosion research. Alternatively, the fractional method (FM) involves measuring a portion of total runoff and soil loss to estimate the total erosion. Although the FM may be easier to use in rainforest agroecology, it has not been evaluated under vetiver grass technology (VGT). Thus, a 2-year field study was conducted to verify the efficacy of the FM under VGT by comparing soil nutrient erosion between the FM and the EPM on two slopes (5% and 10%). Three piped drums (left, central, and right) were used to collect total runoff under the EPM, while only a central piped drum was used under the FM (usual practice). The FM’s runoff and soil loss values were similar to those under the EPM (R2 = 0.98–0.99; p < 0.001). Runoff nutrients (R2 = 0.90; p < 0.001) and eroded nutrients (R2 = 0.97; p < 0.001) from the FM were highly similar to those of the EPM on the 5% slope. Similarly, runoff nutrients (R2 = 0.86; p < 0.001) and eroded nutrients (R2 = 0.95; p < 0.001) from the FM were strongly similar to those of the EPM on a 10% slope. The FM accounted for 92% of the total nutrient erosion measured by the EPM under VGT management. Thus, the FM will make research more efficient, cost-effective, and attractive, particularly in large-scale water erosion studies. Full article

The global challenge of food waste management poses severe environmental and public health risks. Traditional disposal methods, such as landfilling and incineration, exacerbate these issues. Decomposing food waste in landfills emits methane, a greenhouse gas 25 times more potent than CO2, while landfill leachate contaminates soil and groundwater with hazardous pathogens and toxins. Additionally, improper waste disposal fosters microbial proliferation, posing severe health risks. Incineration, though commonly used, is inefficient due to the high moisture content of food waste, leading to incomplete combustion and further air pollution. Therefore, this review examines biodigesters as a sustainable alternative to traditional food waste disposal, assessing their effectiveness in mitigating environmental and health risks while promoting circular economy practices. It evaluates different biodigester designs, their operational scalability, and their economic feasibility across diverse global contexts. Through an analysis of case studies, this review highlights biodigesters’ potential to address localized waste management challenges by converting organic waste into biogas—a renewable energy source—and nutrient-rich digestate, a valuable natural fertilizer. The process reduces greenhouse gas emissions, improves soil health, and minimizes public health risks associated with microbial contamination. Various biodigester designs, including fixed-dome, floating-drum, and tubular systems, are compared for their efficiency and adaptability. Additionally, this review identifies key barriers to biodigester adoption, including feedstock variability, maintenance costs, and policy constraints, while also discussing strategies to enhance their efficiency and accessibility. This review is novel in its comprehensive approach, bridging the technological, environmental, and public health perspectives on biodigesters in food waste management. Unlike prior studies that focused on isolated aspects—such as specific case studies, policy analyses, or laboratory-scale evaluations—this review synthesizes the findings across diverse real-world implementations, offering a holistic understanding of biodigesters’ impact. By addressing knowledge gaps in terms of health risks, environmental benefits, and economic challenges, this study provides valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and industry stakeholders seeking sustainable waste management solutions. The primary cause of noise from vehicular traffic while travelling at speeds over 30 km/h is tyre/road interaction. To reduce this noise source, tyre/road sound emissions research has been carried out using different approaches. Most of this research has been centred around track tests, leading to the development of various track and road-based methods for evaluating tyre/road noise emissions. The CPX (Close-Proximity), along with the CPB (Controlled Pass-By), the CB (Coast-By) and the SPB (Statistical Pass-By), methods are the most common ones. Nevertheless, since Reg. (EC) 1222/2009 came into force, only the CB method, defined in Reg. (EC) 117/2007, can be used to obtain tyre/road noise emission type approval values in Europe. However, current track test methods have important limitations, such as the variability of the results depending on the test track or the test vehicle, the repeatability, the influence of environmental variables or, the main aspect, the limitation of the registered magnitude in these tests, which is the sound pressure level. The Alternative Drum test method (A-DR) was developed in 2015 in order to avoid these disadvantages. However, it involves a complex and time-consuming microphone array for each test. With the purpose of improving the A-DR test method, a new methodology based on drum tests, the ISO 11819-2 and the ISO 3744 standards, was developed. This paper describes the new Alternative CPX Drum test method (A-CPX-DR) and validates it by testing several tyres according to the CB, the A-DR and the A-CPX-DR test methods and comparing their results. This research has demonstrated that all three methods have equivalent sound spectra and obtain close equivalent sound pressure levels for type approval of tyres in the EU, while drum tests have shown greater accuracy. For both reasons, the new A-CPX-DR methodology could be used for tyre/road noise emission type approval in a more precise and cheaper way. Full article

A novel 3D auto-drum machine system for the generation and recording of percussion sounds is developed and presented. The capabilities of the machine, along with a calibration, sound production, and collection protocol are demonstrated. The sounds are generated by a drumstick at pre-defined positions and by known impact forces from the programmable 3D auto-drum machine. The generated percussion sounds are accompanied by the spatial excitation coordinates and the correspondent impact forces, allowing for large databases to be built, which are required by machine learning models. The recordings of the radiated sound by a microphone are analyzed using a pre-trained deep learning model, evaluating the consistency of the physical sample generation method. The results demonstrate the ability to perform regression and classification tasks when fine tuning the deep learning model with the gathered data. The produced databases can properly train machine learning models, aiding in the investigation of alternative and cost-effective materials and geometries with relevant sound characteristics and in the development of accurate vibroacoustic numerical models for studying percussion instruments sound synthesis. This work presents the simulation of a steam generator or water-tube boiler through the implementation in MATLAB® for a proposed mathematical model. Mass and energy balances for the three main components of the boiler—the drum, the riser and down-comer tubes—are presented. Three alternative solutions to the ordinary differential equation (ODE) were studied, based on Runge–Kutta 4th order method, Heun’s method, and MATLAB function Ode45. The best results were obtained using MATLAB® function Ode45 based on the Runge–Kutta 4th Order Method. The error was less than 5% for the simulation of the steam pressure in the drum, the total volume of water in the boiler, and the mixture quality in relation to what was reported. Full article

The objective of this work was to determine the value of improved establishment methods and herbicide applications as alternatives to high seeding rates to improve weed suppression in rice. Field experiments were carried out in 2010 and 2011 to determine optimal seeding rates and seeding methods with and without weed competition in wet-seeded rice. Under wet seeding conditions, drum seeding at 80 kg ha−1 was the most profitable treatment for both weed-free and unweeded rice. Although pre-emergence herbicides are beginning to be adopted in wet-seeded rice, they are seldom used in dry direct-seeded rice in Cambodia. Experiments were carried out in 2018 and 2019 to test crop tolerance and the efficacy of butachlor, oxadiazon, pendimethalin and pretilachlor applied post-sowing and pre-emergence to dry direct-seeded rice. Oxadiazon and butachlor, with the option for a post-emergence herbicide, provided effective weed control and a high grain yield in dry direct-seeded rice. Pretilachlor did not effectively control weeds under dry seeding conditions. Although pendimethalin exhibited good weed control, crop damage was a risk in poorly prepared seedbeds which typify Cambodian rice systems. With an effective integrated weed management strategy, it might be possible to safely reduce seeding rates below 80 kg ha−1 using drum or drill seeding machines. Full article

In Mediterranean regions, afforested areas were planted to ensure the permanence of land cover, and to protect against erosion and to initiate the vegetation processes. For those purposes, pine species were mainly used; however, many of these stands, without silvicultural treatments for over fifty-sixty years, were in a poor state from physical and biological perspective, and therefore, clear-cutting on strips was conducted as silvicultural operation with the aim to eliminate 50% of the pine trees and to favor the affirmation of indigenous broadleaves seedlings. At the same time, the high and increasing demand of the forest based sector for wood biomass related to energy production, needs to be supplied. In a modern and multifunctional forestry, in which society is asking for sustainable forestry and naturalistic forest management, forestry operations should ideally be carried out in a sustainable manner, thus support the concept of sustainable forest management. All these aspects are also related to the innovation in forestry sector for an effective energetic sustainability. Three different forest wood chains were applied in pine plantations, all differing in the extraction system (animal, forestry-fitted farm tractor with winch, and double drum cable yarder). The method of the sustainability impact assessment was used in order to assess potential impacts of these alternative management options, and a set of 12 indicators covering economic, environmental, and social dimensions was analyzed. Further, to support decision makers in taking informed decisions, multi-criteria decision analysis was conducted. Decision makers gave weight towards the indicators natural tree regeneration and soil biological quality to support the achievement of the forest management goal. Results showed that first ranked alternative was case 2, in which extraction was conducted by a tractor with a winch. The main reason for that lies in the fact that this alternative had best performance for 80% of the analyzed criteria. Full article
