This study focuses on the physiological response of lettuce grown on Technosols designed for the remediation of soils polluted by potentially harmful elements (PHEs: As, Cd, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn). Lettuce plants were grown in five treatments: recovered (RS) and polluted soil (PS) as controls, and three Technosols (TO, TS, and TV) consisting of 60% PS mixed with 2% iron sludge, 20% marble sludge, and 18% organic wastes (TO: composted olive waste, TS: composted sewage sludge, and TV: vermicompost of garden waste). The main soil properties and PHE solubility were measured, together with physiological parameters related to phytotoxicity in lettuce such as growth, photosynthetic capacity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defence. All Technosols improved unfavourable conditions of PS (i.e., neutralised acidity and enhanced OC content), leading to a significant decrease in Cd, Cu, and Zn mobility. Nevertheless, TV was the most effective as the reduction in PHEs mobility was higher. Furthermore, lettuce grown on TV and TO showed higher growth (+90% and +41%) than PS, while no increase in TS. However, lower oxidative stress and impact on photosynthetic rate occurred in all Technosols compared to PS (+344% TV, +157% TO, and +194% TS). This physiological response of lettuce proves that PHE phytotoxicity is reduced by Technosols. Thus, this ecotechnology constitutes a potential solution for soil remediation, with effectiveness of Technosols depending largely on its components. Full article

The KM3NeT Collaboration is building an underwater neutrino observatory at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea, consisting of two neutrino telescopes, both composed of a three-dimensional array of light detectors, known as digital optical modules. Each digital optical module contains a set of 31 three-inch photomultiplier tubes distributed over the surface of a 0.44 m diameter pressure-resistant glass sphere. The module also includes calibration instruments and electronics for power, readout, and data acquisition. The power board was developed to supply power to all the elements of the digital optical module. The design of the power board began in 2013, and ten prototypes were produced and tested. After an exhaustive validation process in various laboratories within the KM3NeT Collaboration, a mass production batch began, resulting in the construction of over 1200 power boards so far. These boards were integrated in the digital optical modules that have already been produced and deployed, which total 828 as of October 2023. In 2017, an upgrade of the power board, to increase reliability and efficiency, was initiated. The validation of a pre-production series has been completed, and a production batch of 800 upgraded boards is currently underway. This paper describes the design, architecture, upgrade, validation, and production of the power board, including the reliability studies and tests conducted to ensure safe operation at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea throughout the observatory’s lifespan. This study aimed to evaluate the corrosion properties of different samples coated by the laser-cladding method to find the optimal laser parameters. Thereby, potentiodynamic polarization (Tafel) and electrochemical impedance tests were performed to assess the corrosion resistance of coated samples. Consequently, the corrosion morphology of tested samples was inspected by scanning electron microscopy. The results demonstrated that the laser power directly correlates with pitting corrosion and defects on the surface of the samples. Moreover, when molybdenum and chromium ions are increased in the electrolyte solution, the passive and protective layers are more durable, as the ions are sited within the holes and defects, reducing the surface corrosion rate. Birds have historically suffered adverse effects by toxic elements, such as As, Pb, Hg, and Cd. However, reports on exposure to a wide range of elements, including rare earth elements and other minor elements of emerging concern, and the potential consequences for wildlife are still scarce. This study evaluates blood concentrations of 50 elements and their related effects on lutein and vitamin levels in the Eurasian blackbird (Turdus merula) and wild rock pigeon (Columba livia), inhabiting different scenarios of contaminant exposure. Blood concentrations of As, Cd, and Pb (and Mn in T. merula) were increased in both species captured in the mining area, compared to the control site. T. merula also showed increased As, Cd, and Pb concentrations in blood in the agricultural–urban area, as compared to the control area, together with the highest Hg levels, which could be related to agricultural practices and industrial activities. Decreases of 33 and 38% in the plasma retinol levels in T. merula inhabiting the mining and the agricultural–urban areas, respectively, as compared to the control site, were associated with increased Pb, As, and Cd exposure. This could be due to a metal-driven suppressive effect in retinol metabolism and/or its over-use for coping with metal-related oxidative stress. Full article

This study is focused on isothermal and anisothermal precipitation of M23C6 carbides from the fully ferritic structure of the (γ + δ) austenitic-ferritic duplex stainless steel X2CrNiMo2253, (2205). During isothermal heat treatments, small particles of K-M23C6 carbide precipitates at the δ/δ grain-boundaries. Their formation precedes γ and σ-phases, by acting as highly potential nucleation sites, confirming the undertaken TEM investigations. Furthermore, anisothermal heat treatment leads to the formation of very fine islands dispersed throughout the fully δ-ferritic matrix. TEM characterization of these islands reveals a particular eutectoid, reminiscent of the well-known (γ-σ)—eutectoid, usually encountered in this kind of steel. TEM and electron microdiffraction techniques were used to determine the crystal structure of the eutectoid constituents: γ-Austenite and K-M23C6 carbides. Based on this characterization, orientation relationships between the two latter phases and the ferritic matrix were derived: cube-on-cube, on one hand, between K-M23C6 and γ-Austenite and Kurdjumov-Sachs, on the other hand, between γ-Austenite and the δ-ferritic matrix. Based on these rational orientation relationships and using group theory (symmetry analysis), the morphology and the only one variant number of K-M23C6 in γ-Austenite have been elucidated and explained. Thermodynamic calculations, based on the commercial software ThermoCalq® (Thermo-Calc Software, Stockholm, Sweden), were carried out to explain the K-M23C6 precipitation and its effect on the other decomposition products of the ferritic matrix, namely γ-Austenite and σ-Sigma phase. For this purpose, the mole fraction evolution of K-M23C6 and σ-phase and the mass percent of all components entering in their composition, have been drawn. A geometrical model, based on the corrugated compact layers instead of lattice planes with the conservation of the site density at the interface plane, has been proposed to explain the transition δ-ferrite ⇒ {γ-Austenite ⇔ K-M23C6}. Aging heat treatments in maraging steels are fundamental to achieve the excellent mechanical properties required in several industries, i.e., nuclear, automotive, etc. In this research, samples of maraging 300 alloy were aged using a novel procedure that combines different steps with two atmospheres (nitrogen and water vapor) for several hours. The oxidized surface layer was chemical, microstructural and micromechanically characterized. Due to the thermodynamic and kinetic conditions, these gases reacted and change the surface chemistry of this steel producing a thin iron-based oxide layer of a homogeneous thickness of around 500 nm. Within the aforementioned information, porosity and other microstructural defects showed a non-homogeneous oxide, mainly constituted by magnetite, nickel ferrite, cobalt ferrite, and a small amount of hematite in the more external parts of the oxide layer. In this sense, from a chemical point of view, the heat treatment under specific atmosphere allows to induce a thin magnetic layer in a mixture of iron, nickel, and cobalt spinel ferrites. On the other hand, the oxide layer presents an adhesive force 99 mN value that shows the capability for being used for tribological applications under sliding contact tests. Full article

Background: An epidemiological study of Streptococcus pneumoniae nasopharyngeal carriage in healthy children was carried out five years after the introduction of the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13). Objectives: Study the impact of pediatric vaccination with PCV13, and other associated epidemiological factors on the status of nasopharyngeal carriage, the circulating pneumococcal serotypes, and the antibiotic susceptibility to more frequently used antibiotics. Methods: A multi-center study was carried out in Primary Health Care, which included 1821 healthy children aged 1 to 4 years old. All isolates were sent to the Spanish Pneumococcal Reference Laboratory for serotyping and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Results: At least one dose of PCV13 had been received by 71.9% of children and carriage pneumococcal prevalence was 19.7%. The proportion of PCV13 serotypes was low (14.4%), with an observed predominance of non-vaccine serotypes, 23B, 11A, 10A, 35B/F, and 23A were the five most frequent. A high rate of resistance to penicillin, erythromycin, and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole was found. Conclusions: A low proportion of PCV13 serotypes were detected, confirming the impact of pediatric vaccination for reducing the serotypes vaccine carriage. High resistance rates to clinically important antibiotics were observed. Full article
