Dear Colleagues,
The respiratory system is constantly exposed to various viral pathogens, leading to severe lung infections, which can often cause life-threatening complications. Acute respiratory viral infections continue to pose a global threat, contributing to high morbidity and mortality in all age groups. An overwhelming immune response is one of the key contributors to acute lung injury in respiratory viral infections, often due to an exacerbated cytokine and chemokine response, the disruption of epithelial–endothelial barrier functions, and the excessive influx and dysregulation of innate immune cell mechanisms at the receptor level and in intracellular signaling.
This Special Issue will focus on the mechanisms behind immune response-related signaling in respiratory viral infections, crosstalk between innate and adaptive immunity in viral lung infections, and the role of cellular players (such as neutrophils, monocytes/macrophages, NK cells, dendritic cells, and T/B lymphocytes). Submissions describing research conducted at the cellular level, preclinical small- and large-animal models, and clinical trials will be accepted. The immune response signaling mechanisms that act against viral replication and growth include TLR (Toll-like receptor) signaling, interferon-related signaling, pro-inflammatory cytokine-mediated interference pathways, mechanisms involving RIG-I-like receptor signaling, and the NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome pathway. We invite submissions exploring the activation of these immune activation pathways and their downstream signaling, as well as early signaling events during virus infection, including pattern recognition receptors and immune signal transduction and mechanisms underlying pro-inflammatory cytokine generation. Further studies focusing on blockers, antagonists, or other therapeutic interventions targeting inflammatory signaling pathways are also welcome.
