Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The design of sustainable and resilient systems has become a central challenge in the face of climate change, resource scarcity, and increasing operational complexity. Achieving this goal requires balancing multiple, often conflicting objectives, including economic performance, environmental impact, and system reliability. In this context, multi-objective optimization emerges as a powerful framework to support informed decision-making across the entire system life cycle.

The integration of sustainability principles, particularly those aligned with the circular economy, calls for innovative approaches that extend beyond traditional design and operational practices. Asset management plays a crucial role in this transition, enabling the alignment of long-term value creation with responsible resource use and risk management. Furthermore, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides a structured methodology to evaluate environmental impacts from cradle to grave, supporting the identification of optimal trade-offs among competing objectives.

This Special Issue invites contributions that advance the theory and application of optimization methods for sustainable and resilient system design. We particularly welcome research that integrates multi-objective optimization with asset management, circular economy strategies, and life cycle thinking. Both methodological developments and real-world applications are encouraged, aiming to bridge the gap between academic research and industrial practice and to foster more sustainable and resilient systems.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Systems is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
