Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Education systems are undergoing rapid transformation driven by digitalization, data-intensive processes, and the integration of intelligent technologies. The growing demand for complex modern educational environments, e-learning platforms, and adaptive educational systems requires the development of robust modeling approaches, process optimization, scalable architectures, user and knowledge modeling, and AI-based solutions.

This Special Issue focuses mainly on innovative methodologies as well as architectural and technological systemic approaches for the modeling, optimization, and design of education systems, including recent advances and AI-based developments. Thus, it directly aligns with the scope of Systems by addressing intelligent education systems as complex, integrated systems. The proposed topics of interest for this Special Issue include systems engineering, modeling, and optimization to support design, personalization, and decision-making in complex and adaptive educational environments. The Special Issue aims to bridge the gap between theoretical foundations and practical implementations by exploring system-level perspectives that enhance efficiency, adaptability, personalization, and sustainability in education. Particular emphasis will be given to applications of innovative intelligent technologies and systemic approaches that enhance contemporary education, such as learning analytics, knowledge-based systems, artificial intelligence, large language models, and hybrid neuro-symbolic AI architectures, that support learner-centered design, personalization, and data-driven decision-making.

We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, and case studies on topics such as the following: modeling, simulation, and process optimization in education; educational process engineering; AI-enhanced learning environments; scalable digital infrastructures; and intelligent solutions to support decision-making in educational systems. Contributions that integrate innovations, modeling, and optimization with emerging intelligent technologies in the context of educational systems are particularly encouraged.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Systems is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
