Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The right to employment for people with disabilities is well established and universally recognized, as is their need for equal participation in society. Despite the adoption of inclusive policies, people with disabilities are still the most common victims of workplace discrimination, and face multiple challenges and barriers in the labour market. The increased unemployment and the reduced employment rates of individuals with disabilities are proof of the labour market outcomes for them. This Special Issue, titled “Labour Market Policies and Outcomes for People with Disabilities”, aims to explore in multifaceted ways the labour policy frameworks and real-world employment outcomes for individuals with disabilities. The Special Issue seeks to address these challenges by combining research from various disciplines, including economics, social policy, public health, and disability studies.

We invite authors to submit manuscripts that critically explore the existing labour market policies, bring to the surface the workplace challenges and barriers for individuals with disabilities, propose innovative measures, and highlight the best practices for improving their employment outcomes. We are particularly interested in studies that use robust quantitative or qualitative methodologies and provide creative insights for policymakers, individuals with disabilities, employers, and vocational rehabilitation specialists.

The topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the impact of labour market policies on employment rates for people with disabilities; employment challenges/barriers for people with disabilities; employers’ attitudes towards the hiring/recruitment of people with disabilities; employers’ attitudes towards their employees with disabilities; co-workers of employees with disabilities and their working relations; workplace discrimination towards individuals with disabilities; mobbing and/or workplace sexual harassment of people with disabilities; the intersectionality of disability and employment with other factors such as gender, race, and socioeconomic status; work-related stress for individuals with disabilities and other work-related psychological consequences; vocational rehabilitation specialists and their role in the smooth vocational integration of people with disabilities; and exploration of vocational rehabilitation practices.

Please submit your proposals to the Special Issue editors by 15 February 2025. Notification of acceptance will be delivered by 28 February 2025. Final papers are due on 30 June 2025 for peer review.
