Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Modern smart cities are increasingly integrated with technology; computational artefacts blend with the physical landscape and smart applications seek to provide citizens with new experiences. Many paradigms of smart cities are presented, which focus on developing network infrastructures, optimising transportation flows and lowering energy consumption; numerous new services are provided to citizens to enhance their daily routines. However, a city is not just about infrastructure and services; it is about the people, the place and their interactions. A sociable smart city is one rich in infrastructure, which combines and utilises both people and artificial intelligence, empowering and engaging people in activities where urban social interactions thrive, improving the quality of life and culture.

The focus of this Special Issue entitled “Society and Sociable Smart City” is on the impact of smart cities in society and how a sociable smart city may empower and engage people, enhance citizens’ activities in social interactions, and improve quality of life and culture. It is particularly interesting to study how all of these factors can benefit sensitive populations and demonstrate that smart cities ought to be inclusive and accessible for all.

Therefore, we invite researchers, academics and practitioners to submit original papers, which address (but are not limited to) subjects such as:

  • Smart cities and society
  • Internet of Things and citizens
  • Mobile applications and citizens
  • Big Data and citizens
  • Artificial intelligence and the future of sociable smart cities
  • Security and privacy issues on smart cities
  • Inclusive cities; cities for all
  • Smart city infrastructure for participation, wellbeing and sustainability
  • Impact of computing in modern cities, e.g., economical, social and cultural
  • Smart mobility, citizen mobility modeling, visualization and understanding
  • Smart city applications for active citizenship, participatory activities and collective goals
  • Smart tourism and smart citizens’ experiences and relationships
  • Crowdsensing and crowdsourcing applications
  • Urban computing innovative applications for story-telling, game activities, learning processes, artistic installations
  • Sociocultural challenges for smart cities
  • Ethical challenges for smart cities
  • Case studies and best practices
  • Research challenges and vision

However, the scope of this Special Issue is not limited to these issues and new dimensions are encouraged. Papers with both theoretical and empirical contributions rooted in different disciplines are particularly welcome. Research methodologies may include qualitative, quantitative and mixed approaches.

Contributions must follow one of the three categories of papers (article, conceptual paper or review) for inclusion in the journal and must address the topic of the Special Issue.
