Dear Colleagues,
Risk management activities have been practiced within organisations for decades. Risk management activities often follow the ISO31000 process. Safety-focused risk management activities often involve identifying and assessing hazardous situations in order to identify those that need to be effectively and proactively managed. These risk management activities also involved identifying the risk treatment interventions required to mitigate the risks to an acceptable level as defined by the organisation’s appetite and/or by reasonably practicable standards.
Many techniques have been developed over the years to help practitioners more effectively identify and assess safety related risks. These include hazard identification (HAZID) approaches, hazard analysis approaches (Preliminary/Process Hazard Analysis—PHA or Job Hazard or Job Safety Analysis—JHA/JSA), hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), failure modes effects criticality analysis (FMEA or FMECA), blended hazard analysis (BLHAZID), human reliability and error approaches (e.g. TRACEr, SHERPA, HEART and CREAM), and socio-technical systems analysis approaches (e.g. STPA, FRAM and SAfER). Examples of risk treatment analysis include event tree analysis and LOPA. These techniques were typically developed between the 1950s and 2013.
Since 2011, industry has begun to transition into the fourth industrial revolution, often referred to as Industry 4.0. Industry 4.0 has been characterised as the era of automation and autonomous systems, cyber-physical integrated systems (e.g. digital twins, virtual reality, augmented reality system) and advance predictive and artificial intelligence based data analytics, all of which will be interconnected via the industrial internet of things (IIoT). Thus, Industry 4.0 brings both threats and opportunities to the management of both personal and system health and safety risks. This special edition is seeking submissions researching the applications and risks associated with deploying industry 4.0 technology to deliver more intelligent means of improving and sustaining the health and safety of workplaces.

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Safety is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
