Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Human locomotion involves complex biomechanics and neurophysiology. Restoring natural gait after amputation is a key challenge in prosthetics. Asymmetries, energy loss, and neuromuscular changes can impair mobility and quality of life for those with limb loss. Advances in sensors, digital models, and active prosthetic components offer promising avenues for enhancing gait symmetry, stability, and adaptability. The scientific background integrates multiple disciplines, including biomechanics, robotics, neuroscience, and rehabilitation, underscoring the importance of continued innovation in prosthetic gait analysis and functional mobility restoration.

This Special Issue, “Advances in Prosthetic Gait Analysis and Functional Mobility Restoration,” aims to promote interdisciplinary research connecting fundamental gait science with translational prosthesis development. It aligns closely with the scope of Prosthesis, focusing on innovative technologies and clinical solutions in prosthetic design, testing, and application. We seek original contributions that (1) measure gait biomechanics and neuromuscular control in prosthesis users; (2) improve modeling, simulation, and control methods for powered or microprocessor-based prosthetic devices; (3) investigate machine learning techniques for gait analysis using wearable sensors, video, or other modalities; and (4) assess interventions and outcomes in both real-world and clinical contexts. By compiling such research, this Special Issue aims to inspire new designs and evidence-based rehabilitation approaches that enhance functional mobility for various populations.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Wearable and video-based gait assessment: Portable systems designed for cycle-by-cycle analysis in clinical or community environments.
  • Microprocessor-controlled and -powered prostheses: Focus on design, control algorithms, and kinetic/kinematic evaluation.
  • Predictive and simulation-driven gait modeling: Employing digital twins, neuromuscular models, and optimal control strategies to forecast gait adaptation.
  • Sensor fusion and deep learning: Integrating inertial, pressure, EMG, video, and clinical data for accurate gait classification and prosthesis customization.
  • Energy-harvesting and self-powered features: Embedding passive and active energy modules within prosthetic feet and joints.
  • Three-dimensional printing and tailored prostheses: Creating lightweight, patient-specific devices to enhance fit, comfort, and gait dynamics.
  • Rehabilitation and outcome assessment protocols: prosthesisGait retraining, user adaptation, analyzing long-term functional results, and quality of life improvements.
