Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Optical modulators are fundamental components in modern fiber-optic communication systems, and their importance is rapidly growing with the explosive expansion of AI-driven data centers. As data traffic continues to surge, reducing power consumption has become a central challenge. Direct communication systems without digital signal processors (DSPs) are emerging as a highly promising approach to substantially decrease energy consumption and system complexity. Against this backdrop, high-speed, low-power optical modulators are attracting increasing attention from both academia and industry.

This Special Issue will present the most recent advances in high-speed and low-power optical modulators, encompassing varied materials, device architectures, and design methodologies. We invite contributions addressing fundamental and applied aspects of modulator research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Electrode design and traveling-wave structures for broadband modulation;
  • Novel electro-optic materials, including organic polymers, ferroelectrics, and 2D materials;
  • Device architectures for DSP-free and direct detection systems;
  • Fabrication technologies and integration with silicon photonics platforms;
  • Characterization methods and modeling of high-frequency electro-optic response;
  • Characterization of electro-optic response and novel method.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. Optics is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
