Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Medicines is an international, open-access journal of conventional medicine and proven or evidence-based integrative medicine.

This Special Issue focuses on integrative medicine in the area of pediatric pain.

Children, as well as adults, feel pain: Pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain therapy and prevention is warranted to avoid acute physiological and behavioral distress, which could be critical for the child. Furthermore, recent studies suggest, that prolonged or repetitive pain have an influence on changes in pain processing, especially in young children, due to the fact that their nervous systems are still developing. Therefore, effective and safe methods for pain prevention and therapy are highly valued.

Integrative medicine means the integration of Conventional Western Medicine (CWM) with Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). CAM includes acupuncture, massage, and other types of bodywork (e.g., therapeutic touch), chiropractic work, homeopathy, etc. The Consortium of Academic Health Centers for Integrative Medicine defines integrative medicine as:

  • a relationship-based care that focuses on the whole person;
  • is informed by evidence,
  • uses all kinds of therapeutic approaches, includes all health care professionals and all disciplines, so as to promote the optimal therapy for health.

We welcome papers reporting the latest results of evidence-based CAM and those exploring integrative medicine in the field of pediatric pain. Manuscripts should deal with, but are not limited to, the keywords listed below.
