We are pleased to announce that the winners of the Medicines 2020 Young Investigator Award are Dr. Cristina Cadenas-Sanchez and Dr. Patricia Sampedro-Piquero.

Dr. Cristina Cadenas-Sanchez completed her Ph.D. in Biomedicine under the research direction of Physical Activity and Health at the University of Granada. Currently, Dr. Cadenas-Sanchez is working as a Juan de la Cierva postdoctoral researcher at the Public University of Navarra (ELIKOS research group). She has published 101 scientific article in total (94 indexed in JCR). Her most cited paper in 2017 has accumulated a total of ~500 citations. All her recorded works and published papers have been focused on using physical activity, physical fitness or sleep as a tool or “polypill” for prevention. She strongly believes in the role of physical activity in health in all populations.

Dr. Patricia Sampedro-Piquero is an assistant professor at the Psychology Faculty, Neuroscience Laboratory, of the University of Oviedo. Her research interest is focused on the potential benefits of behavioral interventions, such as aerobic exercise or environmental enrichment, in preclinical models of addiction. She is especially interested in the effects of exercise in reducing the preference and probability of relapse in animal models of alcohol binge-drinking.

As the award winners, Dr. Cristina Cadenas-Sanchez and Dr. Patricia Sampedro-Piquero will each receive an honorarium of 1000 CHF, an offer to publish a paper free of charge before 31 December 2021 in Medicines after peer review, and an engraved plaque.

We would like to thank all the nominators from various fields of study for their participation and all the award committee members for their evaluation of the abundance of excellent nominations.
