About International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy

Aims and Scope

The International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy (IJOM) (ISSN: 2694-2526), the official journal of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM), is an international, peer-reviewed open access publication. IJOM aims to encourage the scientific study of orofacial myology and the management of orofacial myofunctional disorders and related issues, provide educational and evidence-based information to practitioners, and encourage sharing and cooperation across disciplines involved in orofacial myofunctional therapy.

IJOM publishes original research articles, brief reports, reviews, perspectives, case reports, protocols, conference reports, book reviews, opinions and editorials; other article types are also considered. There is no restriction on the maximum length of the papers, although papers should be clear and concise, yet contain enough detail to allow for replication. Electronic files or software relating to the full details of studies can be deposited as supplementary materials along with the article submission. The Editor-in-Chief welcomes inquiries regarding the appropriateness of article submissions.

We welcome submissions on a wide variety of topics related to the practice of orofacial myology. According to the IAOM Scope of Practice (revised April 2026), this includes the evaluation and management of:

  1. abnormal non-nutritive sucking habits (thumb, finger, pacifier, etc., sucking habits)
  2. other detrimental orofacial habits
  3. abnormal orofacial rest posture problems
  4. abnormal neuromuscular muscle patterns associated with inappropriate mastication, bolus formation, and deglutition
  5. abnormal functional breathing patterns
  6. abnormal swallowing patterns

As such, research topics address the dental–orofacial complex, the oronasopharyngeal airway, cranio-musculoskeletal-fascial systems, and their biomechanical and neurophysiological influences across the lifespan. Topics are often multidisciplinary and include principles and applications of orofacial myology related to:

  • ankyloglossia/ankylofrenula
  • behavioral modification of orofacial myofunctional disorders
  • craniofacial and maxillofacial conditions
  • dentistry
  • facial aesthetics
  • facial and hypoglossal nerve palsy
  • obstructive sleep apnea
  • oral health
  • orofacial sensation/pain
  • orofacial posture, function and development
  • orthodontics
  • speech production
  • sucking, feeding, and swallowing
  • temporomandibular joint disorders
  • upper airway (oral/nasal) breathing
