Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

A pivotal challenge in modern medicine is harnessing artificial intelligence to advance precision healthcare and enable more personalized, data-driven interventions. Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI and affective computing, provides novel tools to address this challenge through advanced interactive systems capable of interpreting human emotions and empathy. This Special Issue focuses on AI-driven approaches that translate emotional understanding into practical tools for diagnosis, monitoring, and intervention to improve human well-being.

We are pleased to invite you to contribute to this Special Issue, which focuses on cutting-edge research at the intersection of affective computing, AI-based emotion understanding, and human-centered healthcare technologies.

This Special Issue aims to explore how artificial intelligence can decode human emotions and empathy to advance well-being and improve health outcomes. We particularly encourage submissions that demonstrate how intelligent systems and human–AI interaction can address concrete healthcare challenges in real-world clinical settings.

The goal is to present innovative AI approaches that analyze, model, or predict emotional and empathetic responses, bridging the gap between computational intelligence and human mental processes. Studies that propose practical applications, such as AI-based diagnostic systems, emotion-aware agents, or multimodal sensing for non-contact health monitoring, are especially welcome.

The submission of original research articles and reviews to this Special Issue is welcomed. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Using AI and multimodal data for emotion and empathy recognition to improve health outcomes;
  • Generative AI for mental health and affective interaction;
  • Predictive modeling of psychological or cognitive conditions for early intervention;
  • Non-contact and non-invasive sensing technologies for emotional and health assessment;
  • Human–AI empathy and conversational systems for healthcare;
  • Explainable and ethical AI for clinical emotion recognition and decision support;
  • Cross-disciplinary studies bridging AI, psychology, and biomedical engineering to develop integrated care solutions;
  • Applications of affective computing in clinical and wellness contexts.

We look forward to receiving your valuable contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Healthcare is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
