Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Perioperative medicine has become a crucial field for anesthesia providers, playing a significant role in enhancing surgical outcomes. One of the most common challenges in perioperative medicine is pain management, which has a profound impact on the well-being of older adults in both community and nursing home settings. More than 50% of older individuals in the community experience pain, while this figure exceeds 80% in nursing homes.
Despite its prevalence, persistent pain is often underdiagnosed and inadequately managed, leading to reduced functional abilities, diminished quality of life, sleep disturbances, social isolation, depression, increased healthcare costs, and greater resource utilization. Additionally, the challenges of pain management have contributed to opioid misuse and behavioral changes in patients, creating new clinical concerns for healthcare providers and affecting both patients and their families.
To address these challenges, healthcare professionals perform comprehensive perioperative assessments, manage intraoperative and postoperative care, evaluate and diagnose pain, implement effective treatment strategies, incorporate non-pharmacological interventions, and mitigate the adverse effects of pharmacological therapies.
Our current Special Issue presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the evolving field of perioperative medicine and pain management. We invite submissions covering a wide range of critical topics, including but not limited to perioperative patient evaluation, perioperative management, acute pain, regional anesthesia for acute pain, chronic pain, cancer pain, interventional pain techniques, opioid management, non-pharmacological pain therapies, and pain management for pediatric, geriatric, and female patients.
Submissions from researchers across the world are welcome. Manuscripts may take the form of literature reviews (systematic reviews, meta-analyses, narrative reviews, and perspective articles) or original research (clinical trials, cohort studies, experimental laboratory work, and case–control studies) provided they maintain high quality and a strong focus on pain management. Please note that case reports and study protocols will not be considered.
The broad scope of this Special Issue is designed to encourage diverse perspectives and comprehensive discussions on the latest advancements in perioperative medicine and pain management.
