Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Acute kidney injury remains a global health problem associated with mortality, morbidity, and healthcare expenses. Despite an increase in global efforts in standardizing definitions, development of diagnostic biomarkers, and therapeutic and preventive strategies, the number of cases continue to rise. Of concern are the rising numbers of cases that transition from acute to more chronic forms of the disease, both from the medical and surgical sides. This discrepancy between the rising numbers and global efforts can be attributed to a number of reasons, such as the use of insensitive and nonspecific markers, wide gaps between basic and clinical science research in the area, and implementation problems in applying preventive and therapeutic interventions. Therefore, there is a need for more efforts to address current challenges.

This issue addresses the following:

  1. Acute kidney injury with a focus on a medical and surgical population;
  2. Historical prospective of AKI definitions;
  3. Current standardized definitions of acute kidney injury, acute kidney disease, progressive kidney disease, and chronic kidney disease;
  4. Updates on current renal biomarkers and their limitations;
  5. Current preventive strategies and their limitations with specific focus on bundle therapies and protocols;
  6. Economic impact of the spectrum of perioperative kidney disease and policy implications.
