Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Sleep changes with aging, and multiple etiologies may contribute to poor sleep. The homeostatic and circadian regulation of sleep may suffer alterations due to the neurobiological modifications that are associated with aging. Sleep disturbances have a negative impact on quality of life and data suggest that they correlate with significant negative effects on physical and mental health, and health-related quality of life. As we know, the prevalence of such disturbances increases with age.

Nevertheless, disturbed sleep should not be viewed as a normal part of aging but should prompt research identifying the underlying cause. Furthermore, rapid identification of impaired sleep and its correction may improve the outcomes for age-related diseases. Based on scientific data, we could consider strategies to avoid or to diminish one risk factor which has negative impact on healthy aging: sleep disturbance.

In this context, this Special Issue in Healthcare aims to present high-quality investigations into sleep disturbances in the aging population. Accordingly, this Special Issue seeks empirical and practical studies considering sleep disturbances in elderly and their impact on the quality of life. We welcome research covering topics including, but not limited to, the following:

  • The impact of sleep disturbances on mental health among the elderly population;
  • Sleep patterns and respiratory disorders among the elderly population;
  • Sleep disorders and the impact of their treatment among the elderly population;
  • Strategies for correcting sleep disturbances among the aging population;
  • Challenges and responses in healthcare systems/sectors;
  • Health policies.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
