National Institute for Infectious Diseases “Prof. Dr. Matei Balș”
The National Institute for Infectious Diseases “Prof. Dr. Matei Balș” has a history of more than a century, having evolved under the expert coordination of Prof. Dr. Adrian Streinu-Cercel into what is now Romania’s leading medical institution dedicated to the care, research, and prevention of infectious diseases. Over the decades, the institute has continuously expanded its infrastructure and expertise, becoming a reference hospital for both adult and pediatric infectious pathology, as well as for complex cases requiring intensive care and specialized services.
Beyond its clinical role, the institute has been at the forefront of innovation in Romania’s public health and medical system. It pioneered the introduction of international standards in hospital management and patient safety, as well as modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in infectious diseases. The institute also conducts clinical research, contributing to the development and evaluation of new diagnostic methods, therapies, and preventive strategies. As a teaching and research hub, it plays a key role in the education of medical students, residents and professionals, fostering the next generation of specialists while supporting scientific progress in infectious diseases.
