Metagenomics and Evolution of Microbial Pathogens

Dear Colleagues,

Over the past few decades, research has focused on how microbial pathogens affect both human and animal health. Understanding the molecular basis of the evolution of known microbial pathogens as well as the emergence of new pathogens could shed light on their mechanisms of adaptation and prevalence. Their evolution may imply the acquisition of external genetic material and subsequent modifications that allow them to diversify their pathogenicity and virulence.

All of these processes, from acquisition to modification, have now been analyzed by means of targeted and shotgun metagenomics sequencing approaches to understand the evolution of microbial pathogens not only at the genomic level but also by incorporating their interactions with hosts and other microbial organisms.

We are pleased to invite researchers interested in the application of metagenomic sequencing techniques in the study of bacterial and viral pathogen evolution to submit their original research articles to this Special Issue.
