Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the past few years, we have witnessed an unprecedented acceleration in the pace of discoveries about the Milky Way galaxy. This is due in large part to exquisite new data from the Gaia space mission and from many ongoing ground-based Galactic surveys. These observations have enabled us to refine theories of galaxy formation and even challenge some of the long-standing tenets of the paradigm of Milky Way formation. For example, we now know that  the stellar disc experienced a dramatic interaction with a massive satellite galaxy, about 9–10 Gyr ago. Further, for the first time, we have a panoramic view of the spiral structure of, and the warp in, the disc. Various moving groups and streams of stars are now mapped with precision, and the total mass of the Galaxy is considerably better constrained. The data may even allow the measurement of the gravitational wake induced by the Large Magellanic Cloud in the Milky Way halo, which could help to better constrain the nature of dark matter.

The list of new discoveries in our Galaxy is growing fast. This Special Issue aims to present an up-to-date account of recent observations and discuss the various challenges these data present to current models of galaxy formation. We welcome contributions from both observers and theorists working on modeling the formation of the Milky Way.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Galaxiesis an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.
