Travel Award

As Editor-in-Chief of Galaxies, I am pleased to announce the two winners of the 2018 Travel Awards sponsored by Galaxies:

Travel Awards were granted to Dr. Rosa Valiante, Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) at the Astronomical Observatory of Rome, Italy, and Dr. Mar Mezcua, Postdoctoral Research Fellow of the Institute of Space Sciences in Barcelona, Spain. The awards consist of 800 Swiss Francs each, to attend any academic conference in 2018.

Dr. Rosa Valiante’s research involves elaborating models on the evolution of the first galaxies and their immediate descendants, and aims to compare model predictions with existing observational data. She addresses questions on the evolution of the first cosmic structures, with the aim of determining the origin and properties of high-z dust, which have major implications on the interpretation of observational surveys and on the design of selection criteria to search for the first galaxies.

Dr. Mar Mezcua’s work aims at understanding how supermassive black holes form and grow and how this growth affects the galaxy itself. She investigates a wide range of astronomical objects, such as intermediate-mass black holes, dwarf galaxies, ultra-luminous X-ray sources, active galactic nuclei, radio jets, galaxy mergers, and supermassive binary black holes, following a multiwavelength approach, which involves radio, optical, infrared and X-ray observations.
