Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Periodontitis is a major health issue that still occurs at a high prevalence worldwide and is the main cause of tooth loss in adults. Since the first studies highlighting the important role of microbial plaque in its etiopathogenesis, many factors, such as smoking, diabetes mellitus, and genes associated with host response, have been shown to be associated with it. As such, periodontitis is considered a chronic multifactorial inflammatory disease, resulting from multiple and complex interactions between periodontopathogenic bacteria, host immune response, and other systemic and environmental predisposing factors that lead to progressive loss of tooth-supporting tissues. The goal of periodontal therapy is the long-term preservation of teeth in a (primarily) functional and (secondarily) aesthetic condition. In cases of tooth loss due to periodontitis (or caries, trauma, developmental and genetic defects), osseointegrated implants have emerged in the last 30 years as a popular treatment of rehabilitation due to the high success rate and predictability of the procedure. However, peri-implant diseases (peri-implantitis and peri-implant mucositis) and complications associated with implants themselves or implant restorations have appeared at a considerable frequency. As knowledge around periodontal and peri-implant pathology has been increasing, much progress has been achieved in periodontal and implant therapy. In this Special Issue, advances and novel therapeutic approaches around periodontal and peri-implant disease and implant rehabilitation will be presented.
