Obituary—Prof. Dr. Norbert Klein

With sadness, we regret to inform you about the passing of Prof. Dr. Norbert Klein, Editorial Board Member of Chemosensors, in July 2023. We are grateful for his many contributions to the journal and the legacy his research has left.

Prof. Dr. Norbert Klein joined the Department of Materials as a full professor and Chair in Electromagnetic Materials. At Imperial, he launched the Centre of Terahertz Science and Engineering (CTSE), and he held the position of the director of CTSE.

Prof. Dr. Klein's main scientific activities are in the area of electromagnetic material characterization and sensor applications, but also on microwave and terahertz devices for communication and sensing. He authored over 15 patents in addition to his many scientific publications. He was passionate about sharing his knowledge and was an inspirational teacher and mentor. Prof. Dr. Klein built a vibrant and multidisciplinary group, with alumni embarking on successful careers, in many cases spinning out their own companies. He was generous with his time and always found a space to chat, being intensely committed to fostering collegiality in the department, and across the scientific community. He launched the Centre of Terahertz Science and Engineering at Imperial, and built connections across and beyond the College.

Without a doubt, he was a great inspiration to his colleagues and a great mentor to all his students. His passing creates a huge void not only in his department but also in our journal. His death is a significant loss to the academic community as well as to everyone close to him. We offer our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
