Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Originally identified in the liver tissue, the autophagic process can be roughly divided into three categories: (a) macroautophagy, defined by the bulk clearance of proteins and organelles through autophagosome and autolysosome system; (b) microautophagy, where cytosolic materials are engulfed by the lysosomes by membrane invagination; and (c) chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA), which targets individual proteins to the lysosome and occurs independent of autophagosome formation. The liver is the most metabolically active tissue. Hence, the role of autophagy in maintaining the hepatocyte homeostasis at baseline and autophagic disposal of damaged mitochondria, lipid droplets, and aggregated proteins from liver cells in various chronic conditions are critical for liver function. Dysregulation of autophagy has been documented across multiple liver pathologies such as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), alcoholic liver disease (ALD), hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency, and extensive research has been done in recent years on autophagy to delineate the underlying molecular mechanisms that lead to various chronic liver pathologies. It is crucial to the scientific community to determine how autophagy can be manipulated as a therapeutic strategy. The need is urgent to work out novel strategies targeting the autophagic process and treat various kinds of chronic liver diseases.

The Special Issue will focus on the most recent findings on molecular mechanisms of autophagy that are relevant in liver diseases and how this knowledge can be utilized to find novel therapeutic interventions. Comprehensive review and original research are both welcome.
