Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue explores the pivotal role of artificial intelligence (AI) in integrating diverse information systems—such as enterprise resource planning (ERP), smart city platforms, and Internet of Things (IoT) networks—to create a more sustainable future. We seek contributions that examine the interfaces at which these systems converge, share data, and interoperate, leading to AI-driven advancements like enhanced decision-making, reduced energy consumption and waste, and increased transparency.
We invite original research, novel designs, and compelling real-world case studies from a wide array of fields. Submissions should demonstrate how AI facilitates sustainable practices such as green supply chains, energy-efficient logistics, intelligent urban planning, or equitable and transparent data ecosystems. This Special Issue aims to disseminate cutting-edge trends, chart future research avenues, and empower researchers, engineers, and policymakers to leverage AI for the development of smarter, more environmentally sound, and ethically responsible systems. A key focus is on contributions that explicitly combine artificial intelligence with sustainability objectives, such as climate action, resource conservation, and community well-being.
We welcome a broad spectrum of submissions, from in-depth analyses of specific AI methods or individual system components to comprehensive studies on how AI orchestrates multiple systems for amplified, sustainable impact. Our goal is to foster both granular technical innovations and holistic, integrated solutions that address pressing real-world sustainability challenges.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. We seek contributions that demonstrate how artificial intelligence drives the integration and enhancement of information systems (e.g., enterprise resource planning (ERP), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, Internet of Things (IoT) networks, geospatial systems, public information platforms) to achieve tangible sustainability outcomes. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to,
- AI in Environmental Information Systems: Exploring AI applications that combine data from diverse environmental information systems (e.g., sensor networks, remote sensing platforms, citizen science data systems) for the advanced detection of air/water pollution, forecasting extreme weather, and tracking ecological changes.
- AI-Powered Tools for Energy Efficiency via Information Systems: Focusing on AI solutions that optimize energy consumption through the integration of building information systems (BISs), industrial control systems (ICSs), and smart grid information platforms for enhanced resource efficiency.
- Machine Learning for Waste Reduction and Recycling through Information Systems: Developing models that leverage data from waste management information systems and IoT devices to improve sorting accuracy, optimize logistics via integrated fleet management systems, and enhance material traceability within circular economy information ecosystems.
- AI in Climate Modeling and Carbon Footprint Analysis using Enterprise Information Systems: Leveraging AI to analyze data from enterprise information systems (e.g., ERP, supply chain management systems) and climate data platforms to help organizations assess, reduce, and report emissions more effectively across their value chains.
- Green AI Algorithms and Architectures for Sustainable Information Systems: Creating innovative AI models and deployment strategies that minimize the energy footprint of information systems themselves, including data centers, distributed ledgers, and large-scale AI applications running on diverse IT infrastructures.
- AI-Enhanced Decision-Making via Integrated Information Systems for Sustainability: Supporting strategic sustainability initiatives (e.g., land use planning, environmental risk assessment, conservation policy) through AI-driven insights derived from the integration of geospatial information systems (GISs), public data repositories, and stakeholder information platforms.
- AI in Natural Resource Management Information Systems: Using AI to enhance agricultural information systems, water resource management systems, and biodiversity information networks for optimized resource use and data-driven conservation strategies.
- AI for ESG Data Integration and Reporting Data through Information Systems: Improving the collection, analysis, transparency, and benchmarking of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data through AI-enhanced sustainability reporting information systems and integrated data architectures.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. AI is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
