Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The article represents an important contribution to a topic that has not been widely researched in the literature. The theoretical framework is up-to-date and the text presents an adequate logical sequence. I would like to highlight the high quality of the 'future research directions' section, with the possibility of application to organizational and management research and guidance for interdisciplinary research.

I would just like to make the objective of the paper clearer: This article aimed to provide an overview of IH as a multidimensional construct, its psychometric properties and nomological network... Finally, I congratulate the authors for the quality of the topic and its relevance for future research.

Thanks for the opportunity to review this entry, which is well written. It contributes to our understanding of IH and pointed out important implications to management and leadership literature. I have three suggestions for the authors to consider in the further improvement of the entry.

1. It will be ideal if it could provide some description of the literature review method and scope.

2.  I suggest the author(s) integrate some career development perspective of IH so that we understand how individuals can develop IH in their career life and more implications might be derived from there.

Overall, great contribution to the literature.

Response: Thank you for your comment. In the revision, I have described the method and scope of the literature review as a footnote. Specifically, I relied heavily on two systematic reviews conducted by Porter et al. (2022a) and Porter et al. (2022b). Then I searched for additional articles citing the above two articles for inclusion in this review. The scope of the review is set so that only studies investigating IH on a sample of adults (i.e., 18 years and older), therefore children were excluded from the review.

  1. I suggest the author(s) integrate some career development perspective of IH so that we understand how individuals can develop IH in their career life and more implications might be derived from there.

Response: Following your comment, I conducted a search using “intellectual humility” and “career” in PSYINFO and SCOPUS, two popular databases and found 3 relevant studies that I included in the revision. I have added a paragraph discussing three studies that investigated the linkage between career and intellectual humility. Specifically, Warren and Warren (2021) proposed a 4-stage career/life story model in which intellectual humility is situated in stage 2 where practical wisdom is built to establish an allyship development to sustain equity and inclusion in organizations. Whereas the Warren and Warren (2021) study was qualitative, the other two studies were quantitative. In the first study, Cannon et al. (2020) examined intellectual humility in relation to the Dark Triad personality traits (i.e., narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism) on a large sample of college students in the U.K. Further, the authors posited that the Dark Traits and IH might have shaped career choices that individuals make such that those who are high in the Dark Traits would be more likely to select majors that suit a corporate career path. They found support for the mediating effect of the Dark Triad traits in the linkage between school type (private vs. public) and intellectual humility. In the third study (Kross and Grossmann, 2012) two experiments revealed that intellectual humility or wisdom as the authors called it must be examined in relation to motivated reasoning, i.e., immersive or from a distance. The authors found consistent results in both experiments that cueing people to reason about important issues such as career prospects from a distance built wise reasoning or intellectual humility.

Overall, great contribution to the literature

Response: Thank you so much for your encouragement and endorsement.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The article addresses a current as well as important and interesting topic. What is worth doing in my opinion - to improve the publication - is:
1. at the end of the item “Intellectual Humility - A definition and nomological network” add a short paragraph summarizing the content presented.  Currently, this item has such a reporting character. It would have been worthwhile to state at the end the key aspects discussed in it to show the diversity of approaches. Perhaps the author would be tempted to build a simple chart that shows this? While reading, for example, I had the impression that the issue presented was about leaders. Is this really the case? or is this just one possibility? But are there differences between the intellectual humility of employees of different positions?
2. expand the content of the item “Future research directions”. In my opinion , based on the previous content, more directions can be indicated. This is one of the “tasks” of this type of publication, so I would suggest supplementing the content.

Response: Thank you for your comment. In the revision, you will find that I have added a paragraph summarizing the main points of the section. I also provided a chart/figure (adapted from Porter et al. 2022b) to show a multi-level and interdisciplinary approach to studying intellectual humility. Thanks also for pointing out the possibility of studying intellectual humility among employees in different positions. I have included this topic as a direction for future research.

  1. expand the content of the item “Future research directions”. In my opinion, based on the previous content, more directions can be indicated. This is one of the “tasks” of this type of publication, so I would suggest supplementing the content.

Response: In the revision, I have expanded the future research directions to include more questions and topics for researchers to explore. For example, the question of the potential benefits from fostering IH may vary as a function of the employee’s role and career stage is now added. The list of topics is by no means exhaustive, but it is more extensive than was the previous version of the manuscript. Thanks for your insightful comment that has substantially strengthened this encyclopedia entry.
