Clinical Impact of Preoperative Anemia in Patients Undergoing Peripheral Vascular Interventions: A Systematic Review
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The review by Linhares et al summarize the evidences about preoperative anemia in patients undergoing peripheral vascular interventions, which are still poor. Authors may consider to update the review once pending data of the reported studies will be available. I have some suggestions/comments:
- In the introduction I would introduce the concept of patient blood management (PBM) and mention that strategies to improve anemia, such as PBM programs, are associated to improved outcomes in various surgical settings (Althof FC et al, Ann Surg 2019)
- The preliminary results of the Mensel trial are very poorly informative. Pending data about effects of iron treatment would be of interest.
- Lines 144-146: the sentence isn't clear the way it is written
- I would emphasize that there is no prospective data about effects of iron treatment or other PBM treatment in anemic patients undergoing PVI.
- Favorable effects of modern iron treatment may be argumented in the discussion (Girelli D et al, Int J Hematol 2018)
