Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The article is well written and organized.

It is useful with respect to the scientific literature cited, above all because it compares different shearography techniques, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages.

I believe there are some minor revisions to be made:

- the figures are too small and the legends difficult to read; In particular, figure 3 should indicate the reference axes and in the caption the type of sample analyzed.

- the references have some repetitions (for example ref  12,13 e 27)

Author Response

Point 1:  The figures are too small and the legends difficult to read; In particular, figure 3 should indicate the reference axes and in the caption the type of sample analyzed.

Response 1: Thank you very much for your comments. We have adjusted the figure size of the whole paper.  We have also added the references axes and the type of samples in the cation.

Point 2: the references have some repetitions (for example ref  12,13 e 27)

Response 2: Thank you for your advice, the repeated reference # 13 and 27 has been removed.

Reviewer 2 Report

  1. Figure 1 is not clear. Texts in Figure 1 are hard to read.
  2. Authors should improve the figure quality. For example, Figure 11 is blurred.
  3. Authors should mention in the figure caption the full form of the acronym used in figures, for example, in figure 14.
  4. Discussion on experimental results is missing.
  5. Authors should show how shearography systems for dual direction measurement are efficient through experimental studies.

Author Response

Point 1: Figure 1 is not clear. Texts in Figure 1 are hard to read.

Response 1: Thank you very much for your comments. A better quality image of figure 1 has be uploaded.

Point 2: Authors should improve the figure quality. For example, Figure 11 is blurred.

Response 2: Appreciate your opinion. The quality of all the figures have been upgraded.

Point 3: Authors should mention in the figure caption the full form of the acronym used in figures, for example, in figure 14.

Response 3: Thanks a lot for your suggestion. Following your suggestion, the full form of acronyms used in the figures has been added to the figures’ caption.

Point 4: Discussion on experimental results is missing.

Response 4: Thanks you very much for your suggestion. Since this paper is a review paper, it is mainly to introduce the different developments as well as their advantages and disadvantages. The experimental result is not the focus; however, according to your suggestions, we have added some typical experimental results of dual-directional shearograms in section 2.4 for better understanding.

Point 5: Authors should show how shearography systems for dual direction measurement are efficient through experimental studies.

Thanks for your advice. We have already included experimental test result in Fig. 3 to show the importance of dual directional measurement. According to your suggestion, we have added one more experimental test results and discussion to understand why we need dual directional measurement. Also, we have rewritten section 2.1 and section 2.2 to add the relative description. In addition, some discussions have been added to the last paragraph of section 2.4 to help better understand how shearography systems are efficient for dual direction measurement.

Author Response

Point 1: The main contribution and its significance should be stated more strongly and positively in the abstract section.

Response 1: Thank you very much for your suggestion. We have rewritten the abstract for a better introduction for main contribution and the significance of the dual shearing shearography.

Point 2: The introduction should contain a comprehensive focus on relevant articles.

Response 2: Thanks for your comments. We add the description of the comprehensive focus on relevant articles at the fourth paragraph of the introduction. In addition, we have rewritten section 2.1 and section 2.2 to add the relative description, and some discussions have been added to the last paragraph of section 2.4 to help better understand how shearography systems are efficient for dual direction measurement.

Point 3: The authors need to pay attention to some details, such as align text should be used in all paragraphs.

Response 3: Appreciate your suggestion. The problems of aligning text have been corrected.

Point 4: In addition, all presented equations should be written in Math Type's Equation.

Response 4: Thank you for your suggestion, the quality and visibility of each equation has been improved. In addition.

Point 5: Add suitable references for governing equations.

Response 5: Thanks for your suggestion, the suitable references of governing equations has been added. In addition, we rewrite section 2.1, 2.2 for better understanding the principle of shearography

Point 6: I suggest the authors provide more explanations for the listed figures.

Response 6: Thank you for your suggestion, we have added some explanations of figures 6, 9, 15, and 19 in corresponded paragraphs.

Point 7: What are the advantages of the employed technique compared to other approaches?

Response 7: Thank you for your questions. In this review paper, we present different dual directional shearographic system developed in the past decades. We compared the difference between normal shearography and dual directional shearography to prove its significance in introduction section. The conventional shearography is shearing direction sensitive. There are two solutions to solve the shearing problems of shearography include measuring the flaws through multiple tests or to design a multi-directional test procedure. The dual directional shearography can save the time and labor of the multiple times test, besides it can achieve simultaneously testing results of dual shearing directions under different loading conditions.

Point 8: There exist some typos and proofreading are necessary, for example,

- Line 20 (comprise)

-Lines 141- 242 (. In the Figure)

Response 8: Thank you very much for your revision. We have checked carefully the manuscript again and the problem of typos, vocabulary, and grammar has been corrected.

Point 9: Why some parameters are written in bold in text and in the equations not, for example a1 and a2 (line 104) and equations 1 and 2.

Response 9: Thank you for your comments. We have made corrections

Point 10: Please check the font sizes of sections and subsections in the whole article. Also, it is recommended to describe each presented section or subsection.

Response 10: Thank you very much for your suggestions. The font sizes of sections and subsections have been corrected, and the description of each subsection has been added between 3.1-3.1.1 and 3.2-3.2.1

Point 11: The quality of illustration diagrams should be improved in the whole manuscript.

Response 11: Appreciate your suggestion.  The quality of all the figures have been improved.

Point 12: Cite reference [ line 388, for example] properly in text.

Response 12: Thank you for your correction. The reference of citation has been adjusted.

Point 13: Write the references in correct way.

Response 13: Thank you very much for your suggestions. The type of references has been corrected.

Point 14: The conclusions section is very weak. Highlight the outcomes of the analysis point by point.

Response 14: Thank you very much for your comments. We rewrite the conclusion to enhance the highlights point by point. Also, the further developments of the dual directional shearography are discussed in the conclusion section.
