Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The topic is largely studied in the scientific field of geography and planning from the past century.

So a clear definition of periurbanization should be offered by a roubust lierature and quotes. At this stage of the work, this part is missing, the references are incomplete and some of them no well known. The references in local language should be translate, too.

I suggest to A. to revisit the first pragr.

about the methodology, the study is substantially based on the use of instrumental tools. the A. should revisit this part making it more roboust.

Since the case study could not be known to the reader, a map and more information  need.

About References: where it is possibile doi or orcid number have to be included.

Author Response

Thank you very much for taking the time to review this manuscript. Please find the detailed responses below and the corresponding revisions/corrections highlighted/in track changes in the re-submitted files.

  1. The topic is largely studied in the scientific field of geography and planning from the past century. So a clear definition of peri-urbanization should be offered by a robust literature and quotes. At this stage of the work, this part is missing, the references are incomplete and some of them no well known.
  • Response: Thank you for the suggestion. Peri-urbanization in global South, such as Indonesia, is divided into four bodies of literature which have been included in the manuscript. The changes can be found in line 62-78, with conclusion provided in line 98-101.

  1. The references in local language should be translate, too.
  • Response: All 9 references in local language had been translated into English.

  1. I suggest to A. to revisit the first pragr. about the methodology, the study is substantially based on the use of instrumental tools. the A. should revisit this part making it more robust.
  • Response: Previous researches regarding the utilization of quantitative descriptive analysis are provided in the first paragraph of Section 2. Materials and Methods (line 115-117). Instruments and software that were used on each analysis can be found in sub-chapter 2.1-2.4

  1. Since the case study could not be known to the reader, a map and more information need.
  • Response: Additional information and a map to outline the location of case study has been added in the first paragraph of Section 3. Results.

  1. About References: where it is possibile doior orcid number have to be included.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The article explores land use changes and their impact on community perception in an intermediate urban suburb in Indonesia over a 20-year period, analyses the land use dynamics in different areas from 2012 to 2022 and predicts the trend of changes up to 2032 through geographic information systems (GIS), and carries out a great deal of work around the topic of the article, which is of some reference significance for clarifying the urbanisation path of the suburb, but However, there is still a gap between the article and public publication, and the following suggestions are given to make the article more scientific and perfect:

1. When presenting GIS analyses, it is recommended that authors provide details on the software version used, the data source, the spatial resolution and the specific analysis methodology (e.g., buffer analysis, reclassification techniques, etc.) in order to increase the transparency and operability of the methodology section;

2. Although the study points out the objectives, in the construction of the theoretical framework, in addition to citing existing theories, it should also explore how these theories can specifically guide the design and interpretation of the results of this study, such as using the theory of the urban-rural continuum to explain the complexity of the urban-rural junction zone, which can be referenced and cited as follows:

[1] Understanding land for high-quality development. J. Geogr. Sci. 33(2): 217-221.

3. It is recommended that authors provide detailed criteria for sample selection, such as random sampling, stratified sampling, etc., and demonstrate the consistency of the sample with the overall population through demographic characteristics (age, gender, occupation, etc.) to ensure broad applicability of the results. In addition, for community perception analyses, a detailed description of the sample selection process and the methodology used to ensure sample representativeness is required. Were all areas covered in a balanced manner? Are there any biases?

4. A 5-point Likert scale was used in the paper to assess resident attitudes, but no details were provided on how specific conclusions were drawn from these data. It is recommended that the depth of statistical analysis be increased, such as factor analysis or cluster analysis, or that more in-depth data analyses, such as correlation and regression analyses, be carried out using statistical software (e.g., SPSS, R) to quantify the strength and direction of the specific relationship between community perceptions and land use changeï¼›

5. The description of changes in zoning types over a 20-year period in the text should include a detailed interpretation of the changes at different stages, including turning points and driving factors, and time-series maps can be used to show the land-use change trends in each area over time and to analyse the socio-economic drivers behind the transition nodes;

6. For the 2022-2032 projection model, it is recommended that the authors provide validation methods, such as cross-validation and sensitivity analyses, to assess the robustness and uncertainty of the model in order to increase the reliability of the projectionsï¼›

7. The article should more clearly articulate the relationship between community perceptions and actual land-use change, whether there is a causal link, and how this link is identified and quantifiedï¼›

8. The policy recommendations in the paper are relatively broad and should be more targeted and implemented based on the findings of the study so that policymakers can directly apply the results of the study to address the changing development of marginal urban and rural areasï¼›

9. It is recommended that the authors conclude by suggesting potential directions for future research based on the current findings, such as long-term follow-up studies, more detailed social network analyses, etc., in particular which areas need to be further explored and how to deepen the themes of the current researchï¼›

10. The article has fewer references cited in the most recent year,In order to maintain the innovative and marginal contribution of the article, it is recommended that the authors update the bibliography according to keywords such as "Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Land Use", which can be referenced and cited as follows:

[1] Investigating the interactions between spatiotemporal land use/land cover dynamics and private land ownership[J]. Land Use Policy, 2024, 141.

Author Response

Thank you very much for taking the time to review this manuscript. Please find the detailed responses below and the corresponding revisions/corrections highlighted/in track changes in the re-submitted files.

  1. When presenting GIS analyses, it is recommended that authors provide details on the software version used, the data source, the spatial resolution and the specific analysis methodology (e.g., buffer analysis, reclassification techniques, etc.) in order to increase the transparency and operability of the methodology section;
  • Response: The data source, spatial resolution, and specific methodology for each step have been mentioned in the revised manuscript (line 127-135).
  1. Although the study points out the objectives, in the construction of the theoretical framework, in addition to citing existing theories, it should also explore how these theories can specifically guide the design and interpretation of the results of this study, such as using the theory of the urban-rural continuum to explain the complexity of the urban-rural junction zone, which can be referenced and cited as follows: [1] Understanding land for high-quality development. J. Geogr. Sci. 33(2): 217-221.
  • Response: Theoretical framework of peri-urbanization in global South, such as Indonesia, is divided into four bodies of literature which have been included in the manuscript. The changes can be found in line 62-78, with conclusion provided in line 98-101. By understanding the existing body of knowledge and theoretical framework, the discussion section can be revised and thus providing a deeper understanding regarding the result of the study.
  • Response: Thorough explanation of sample selection criteria is mentioned in section 2.3. line 157-162. The homogenic characteristics of the population allowed the researcher to assume that same amount of sample on each village can represent the overall socioeconomic condition in the study case area.
  • Response: Simple regression analysis using SPSS 22 has been added to the manuscript to provide more insight regarding community perception and ultimately behavior analysis. The methodology is added in subsection 2.3 Settlement Pattern and Community Perception Analysis (line 202-210), while the result is presented in subsection 3.3. Settlement Pattern and Community Perception in Urban Areas (line 391-408).
  1. The description of changes in zoning types over a 20-year period in the text should include a detailed interpretation of the changes at different stages, including turning points and driving factors, and time-series maps can be used to show the land-use change trends in each area over time and to analyse the socio-economic drivers behind the transition nodes;
  • Response: Description of zoning changes are described in subsection 2.2 Zoning Typology Identification of Peri-Urban Area (line 142-152). The socio-economic drivers are explained in line 296-305, while the time-series maps can be observed in Figure 2.
  1. For the 2022-2032 projection model, it is recommended that the authors provide validation methods, such as cross-validation and sensitivity analyses, to assess the robustness and uncertainty of the model in order to increase the reliability of the projectionsï¼›
  • Response: The projection model is cross-referenced with the existing zoning policy in the area. The discussion about the cross-reference can be found in section 4. Discussion.
  1. The article should more clearly articulate the relationship between community perceptions and actual land-use change, whether there is a causal link, and how this link is identified and quantifiedï¼›
  • Response: The conclusion regarding the relationship and causal effect is added in the last paragraph of section 4. Discussion.
  1. The policy recommendations in the paper are relatively broad and should be more targeted and implemented based on the findings of the study so that policymakers can directly apply the results of the study to address the changing development of marginal urban and rural areasï¼›
  • Response: Policy recommendations has been improved and more specified in the section 4. Discussion.
  1. It is recommended that the authors conclude by suggesting potential directions for future research based on the current findings, such as long-term follow-up studies, more detailed social network analyses, etc., in particular which areas need to be further explored and how to deepen the themes of the current research
  • Response: Future research recommendation has been added in the last paragraph of section 5. Conclusions.
  1. The article has fewer references cited in the most recent year, In order to maintain the innovative and marginal contribution of the article, it is recommended that the authors update the bibliography according to keywords such as "Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Land Use", which can be referenced and cited as follows: [1] Investigating the interactions between spatiotemporal land use/land cover dynamics and private land ownership[J]. Land Use Policy, 2024, 141.
  • Response: 58 out of 75 (77.5%) references are published during the last 5 years (2019-2024). Changes can be found in the last section (References).
