Blind spots? Psychiatric diagnosis and psychotherapeutic practice from gender perspectives. This text addresses diagnosis and therapy in psychiatry from gender perspectives.Even in psychiatry, gender is constructed. Gender conceptions impact the psychopathological classification and diagnosis. This is demonstrated through the history of psychiatric diagnosis, which also necessarily constitutes a history of views, prejudices, and ideologies.Thereafter, the focus shifts to the present state of psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care. Psychiatric institutions generally do not take into account questioned gender attitudes in their organizational and clinical routine. Therapy, as well as psychotherapy, is characterized by gender stereotypes. In the second part, conclusions are drawn from the investigation of gender construction. Gender prejudices must be broken down in treatments and institutions in a self-critical manner. This especially concerns prejudices against people of different cultures, which must be reconsidered from gender perspectives. Finally, it is suggested to consider patients’ “gender identity stress”. In old age, depression is often associated with cognitive impairment, dementia is associated with depressive symptoms, depressive symptoms can precede a dementia syndrome, and depression and dementia can occur together. In addition, depressive disorders increase the risk for the later development of dementia. The current evidence for the benefit of clinical findings, and neuropsychological, neurochemical and imaging biomarkers for the differentiation of dementia and depression, as well as for the prognosis of depression with regard to the risk of dementia is presented. In addition, current pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy of depression in demented patients is summarised. There is an urgent need for research to elucidate clinical and biological features in older people with depressive disorders who are at an increased risk of developing dementia. Full article
