Humanitarian aid workers working in armed conflict and disaster situations are suffering from increasingly violent emotional reactions. In order to help them to complete their job successfully, to increase their resistance to stress and their efficiency in the field, they must be supported. For this, emotional debriefing in group (psychological debriefing) is the right measure to take. This paper reports on different interventions from the ICRC Stress Management Unit. The principles of emotional group debriefing are underlined. This procedure might be effective because it is based on an encounter group whose healing capacity is well known. A simplified four steps procedure is proposed to make the conduct of such supportive groups easier. Full article

Clinical observation shows that hysteria can produce imaginative phenomena that are difficult to differentiate from delusion. Using phenomenological methodology, the essential qualities of these imaginations are analysed and described. While delusion can be conceived as a disturbance in the system of intuitive-holistic cognition resulting in an abnormal eidetic feeling, hysterical imagination is lacking this feeling character and, however, showing an allegorical structure newer seen within delusion. It is demonstrated that these imaginative phenomena are properties of hysterical personalities, intensified and pronounced, but nevertheless intra- and extrapsychically targeted as “useful”, i.e. serving a purpose. A real “deprivation” of ego poser ist never observed. Full article

In the catchment area of Zurich, sectorisation was introduced in 1994. As such, the city of Zurich was divided into two sectors for which the Psychiatric University Hospital holds responsibility. At the same time, a system was implemented in order to evaluate this process continuously. So far, the data assessed with the newly implemented continuous monitoring system has been analysed with regard to the quality of structure, process and outcome. In particular, the impact of sectorisation on topics like client structure, sectorised care, continuity of care and quality of treatment has been examined. Our evaluation showed that sectorisation had a positive effect on various indicators, mainly on the quality of treatment. However, some problems concerning the implementation of sectorisation were found. This information is used for quality management and serves as a feedback for the decision-maker to take into consideration in ongoing planning. Full article

The drug effect gives especially young people with a borderline personality structure and/or narcissistic personality disorder an emotional “high” and a cognitive illumination which moves them profoundly and fascinates them. After this short effect the concerned people feel all the more an emptiness in themselves. Therefore they must take drugs soon again. An inquiry with 4802 recruits (20 years old men) in 1972/73 and a third following-up examination of 914 men of those former recruits in 1991 showed that people who had grown up without love and security had a higher risk to fall into drug consumption until their mature adult years. The search for narcissistic reinforcement and “tranquilizing” their “hunger” represents a main motive for seeking help with drugs. The supposition that drug addiction develops on the basis of a (latent) homosexuality as Radó [20] supposed is an unproved hypothesis. Full article
