Spatial Variation in Educational Quality in Colombia Based on the Phenomena of Agglomeration and Academic Segregation
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The study is novel and interesting
I suggest including the study conducted in the Ecuadorian setting and mentioning the role of the teaching profile in the literature review.
Ramírez-Montoya MS, Loaiza-Aguirre MI, Zúñiga-Ojeda A, Portuguez-Castro M. Characterization of the Teaching Profile within the Framework of Education 4.0. Future Internet. 2021; 13(4):91. https://doi.org/10.3390/fi13040091
The methodology is clear and can be taken into account for other contexts. It would be interesting to know the relationship of these factors with the results of some standardized test, but I understand it could be for future studies).
It is necessary to include a discussion section in which comparisons with other studies of the main findings are addressed.
The conclusions provide suggestions as to how this study can be useful for public policy and decision makers.
Author Response
Dear reviewer, in response to relevant comments, these are the modifications that were made:
- The suggested reference has been included on page 3, paragraph 2.
- The discussion section has been expanded to include new references that argue the reason for the agglomeration in the Andean region.
The changes made are indicated in the manuscript in yellow.

Reviewer 2 Report
A number of revisions are necessary for this paper to be considered for publication. First, georeferencing is not an appropriate way to describe this work (the title). "Spatial Variation in Educational Quality"...is more representative of the project. There are other aspects that to do not make sense (nothing here is about socialization, but this is brought up a few times) or need greater explanation (many readers will not know what SABER is; the stratum are not explained - socioeconomic levels?). Further, the maps are too small and without a reference map a non-Colombian reader will not understand the spatial relationships, and there is passive voice and other English language editing needed. While perhaps the authors intend for this to be a methods paper, there should be some attempt to ask why these outcomes exist (i.e., why is educational quality concentrated in the Andes? Why does this matter?). There does not seem to be much here that one could not have already guessed and as a result does not add to the existing literature substantively.
Author Response
Dear reviewer, in response to relevant comments, these are the modifications that were made:
- The article has been renamed “Spatial Variation in Educational Quality in Colombia based on the Phenomena of Agglomeration and Academic Segregation”.
- On page 4, paragraph 2, the definition of SABER tests has been included.
- On page 4, paragraph 1, “socioeconomic level” has been included as a synonym for “socioeconomic status”.
- In relation to the maps, they have been reworked with a higher image resolution, they have been enlarged and a note on the color scale has been included to improve the reading of the graphics. In addition, on page 6, paragraph 1, a link has been included that takes the reader to a map of Colombia with the spatial divisions by region.
- In the discussion section, articles were included that argue the reason for the agglomeration of educational quality in the Andean region.
The changes made are indicated in the manuscript in yellow.

Thank you for the revisions. An edit by a native English speaker would improve the flow of the manuscript.
