Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript reported a multiscale 2D model to investigate the gas purging in PEMFC under different electrochemical reaction intensities conditions. Since the PEMFC system needs to survive harsh environments, including sub-freezing temperatures, the cold start brings great challenges due to the ice blockage. Hence, gas purging is important and the water distribution inside PEMFC needs to be investigated. For nitrogen-based purge, the optimal operating condition is determined as the best strategy, judging by the best output performance and economic analysis during the shutdown and purge process.

I consider the content of this manuscript will definitely meet the reading interests of the readers of the Processes journal. However, there are certain English spelling and grammar issues, and also the discussion and explanation should be further improved.

Therefore, I suggest giving a minor revision and the authors need to clarify some issues or supply more experimental data to enrich the content. This could be comprehensive and meaningful work after revision.

Detailed comments can be found in the PDF file.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Dear Authors,

The Title:

Study on purging strategy of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell under different operation conditions

I have to read your manuscript with great attention and interest.

The authors studied the operation of the fuel cell while performing the operation of the GDL and CL filters. It was investigated how the energy flow affects the characteristics of the cell's operation.

It should be emphasized that the manuscript presents very interesting results that will certainly contribute to the development of work related to the commercialization of fuel cells.

The submission falls within the scope of the journal and is sufficiently original.

Detailed comments are provided below:

  • The colors used in Fig. 4 and 5 should be correlated with Fig. 1: Line 1 - red, Line 2 - black, Line 3 - blue.
  • Fig. 7 is incomprehensible to me, does it include layer thicknesses on the x-axis, please explain?
