Exploring the Frontier of Integrated Photonic Logic Gates:
Breakthrough Designs and Revolutionary Applications

Kazanskiy et al

The paper reviews recent advancements in nanofabrication, nonlinear optics, and phase-change materials have facilitated the seamless integration of all-optical logic gates onto compact photonic chips.  The review is well written and it can be published.  Before it is accepted, I have a few comments:

First, I find the title is rather daunting:  breakthrough designs maybe but revolutionary applications? I would advise a more modest title by removing the word "revolutionary".  In what sense are the applications, in optical communication, neuromorphic computing, AI, and quantum technologies revolutionary?

I find section 2 on "types and characteristics of logic gate" a little trivial.  Could it be left out?  It makes sense to include it if the article is meant for a pedagogical book.

In table 2, it would be good to include the possible $\chi^2$ and $\chi^3$ for the materials.

For section 4.3, the authors may find the following references useful:

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The paper highlights significant advancements in integrated photonic LGs for high-speed, energy-efficient computing and optical signal processing. It is well written and comprehensive.

it would have been interesting in this review to also look at, or at least hint, how those systems could be programmed and the challenges faced for actual system architectures. Also, the scalability is mentioned but no real number are provided. I would be interesting to understand what could be the kind of metrics like number of gates per sqmm or power consumption per bit processed that could be achieved in order to compare to more traditional systems. The promise of high-speed is definitely enticing but the other metrics are really important as well. A more systematic approach with figures would add some more value to the manuscript.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The manuscript ID technologies-3764811 has been devoted to mainly analyze the progress in particular integrated photonic logic gates. Please see below a list of comments to the authors:

  1. The authors should state in the introduction what this work adds to literature in respect to previous publications in the topic.
  2. The incorporation of a roadmap with the progress of the development of integrated photonic logic gates would be welcome.
  3. The response time should be included in a column of table 2.
  4. The fingerprint of the logic gates presented in table 3 can be included in a comparative column.
  5. Why molecular logic gates or probabilistic bits are not mentioned in the review?
  6. Perspectives can be improved in order that this work can be a base for future research. The authors are invited to comment about the combination of logic gates at the nanoscale. You can see for instance: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijleo.2024.171693
  7. Key technical trends can be discussed with better details. You can see for instance: https://www.idtechex.com/tw/research-report/silicon-photonics-and-photonic-integrated-circuits-2025/1067
  8. The noble metal materials and carbon-based systems in nanostructured form could be included in the discussion of section 3.
  9. It is suggested to individually present the citations reported in collective form in section Challenges and perspectives. This is in order to easily visualize the importance of each citation selected for this review.
  10. In a regular paper are typically presented around 40 references. And it is expected to present in a review around 200 references. In my opinion, this review can consider additional works to improve the analysis.
