Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

A very nice manuscript.  Well designed, well executed, well written.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors have studied the role of brain estrogens in hippocampal neurogenesis throughout aging in female rats.

The design of the experimental groups and the large number of markers and antibodies used are correct to obtain results that allow us to draw final conclusions that implicate brain estrogens as important regulators of hippocampal functioning. It will be interesting to see if they have a similar role in male animals.

Apart from minor language corrections, the figures would be seen and interpreted more easily if they were larger, for example adapted to the width of the page. Some images and graphics are too small and read poorly if not enlarged.

- The language must be revised, there are some typographical errors that must be corrected, for example: lines 19 and 37 neurohgenesis, line 28 17B-estrodial, the last paragraph of the abstract is repeated (lines 42-44), line 260 the word marker at the end it is repeated, line 291 at the end of the legend of figure 2 is repeated Scale bar.

- Review the legend of figure 3, which is confuse: line 330 refers to Table 1, which does not exist (Table 1. Mon intact female...)
