Author Response

The reviewer requests an entirely new article designed to introduce the subject of Maya religion to readers unfamiliar with this area of scholarship. This is not possible to accomplish in the present context. The reviewer has helpfully requested that the figures be embedded in the narrative and that is in the revision to be submitted. The reviewer requests that first person statements be avoided and they have been removed from the revision.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This is a very useful paper and it will be of interest not just to Mesoamericanists but also to those concerned with the comparative ethnography of New World religions. It should be published as-is, aside from some minor editorial clean-ups as follows:

Line 9 – “CE” s/ ‘BCE’

46 and ff. – genetalia is normally given as genitalia

243 – “2005: Fig.5” s/b Fig. 6 or 11

Author Response

The reviewer suggests that the article is ready for publication. The revision includes a new high resolution photograph of the genitalia of the Dallas Old WomanMan further documenting that it is indeed a woman giving birth to a penis.
