Influence of Different LED Light Colour Temperatures on the Preference Behaviour of Weaned Piglets
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The authors describe the influence of different LED lights on the behaviour of 4-to-9 weeks old piglets.
The article is well-written and very clear with preliminary interesting results concerning the piglets welfare.
I have only a very few recommendations to suggest:
- Line 23: add the age of the piglets
- Line 90: add some precision about this passageway: the size, the separation between the two compartments? Have you a sort of curtain? thus, briefly, could you suspect some influence coming from this passage?
- Figure 1, the difference in black and white printing papers shows no difference between the food through and the plate.
- Figures 2: idem, it woulb be better to use some dots or other systems to differenciate between the lines (in black and white)
- In general, the mean +/- SD: one chiffer after the dot

This study evaluated pig preference for two different LED lighting color temperatures. This is a relevant study that could have implications for pig husbandry and welfare. Overall, the study was well designed and the paper was well written. Minor suggestions for improvement are outlined below-
L145- What 3 days were observed? Were these 3 consecutive days throughout the week? Alternating days? etc.
L146- How long was the 5 min time sampling method used for each day? Was this every 5 minutes throughout the entirety of the light period? Every 5 minutes for the entire 24 hour period? etc.
Figure 3 & 4- SE bars should be included in these figures. Since week 3 is also explained in the text, including week 3 visualizations would also be helpful.
L218- An explanation of this effect should be included.
L249 & 264- A visualization of the eating and active behavior data should also be included.
L282- I believe the Figure 3 reference here should actually be referring to Figure 5.
L285- This should be labeled as Figure 5.
L327- Was body weight collected after the study began? Thus, could a change in stocking density be calculated for this study?
