- Narrative reviews without meta-analytic synthesis;
- Meta-analyses focusing on non-traumatic rib fractures or non-surgical interventions only;
- Studies not available as full text.

- Incidence of pneumonia;
- Length of stay in intensive care unit;
- Length of stay in hospital;
- Mortality;
- Need for tracheostomy;
- Pain and quality of life, when available.
