Comments on grammar:

"et al." should always appear with an ending period, since it is a latin abbreviation.

Be consistent with the word "guidewire" (or "guide wire").

"Young's modulus" requires the first letter capitalized (page 3 etc.).

A space should (almost) always be used to separate the value and the unit (page 3 etc.).

Change "eqution" into "equations" in page 4 (after Equation 2).

Fix the vertical alignment of Equation 4 (and check the vertical alignment of the others).

Missing a period at the end of the sentence after Equation 7.

"Equation" and "Figure" in body text should always appear capitalized.

Fix the font size in Equation 8, and 12.

Missing a comma at the end of Equation 8, 22, and 23.

Missing a period at the end of several dotted list items (starting at page 4).

In Equation 16, b1 is a vector, so it should be written in boldface.

Change "arror" into "error" in page 10.

Change "Figure. 10" into "Figure 10" in page 11.

Change "Figure 12 (a-b) show" into "Figure 12 (a-b) shows" in page 12.

Comments on content:

The experiments presented in the paper present an error analysis limited to the 2D case, while the guidewire simulation runs in 3D. So, it seems appropriate to me, at least to address this issue in the final considerations on the error analysis.

Reviewer 2 Report

Review of the article applsci-416438-v1 “Research on deformation simulation of guidewire in blood vessel based on SQP Algorithm” by L. Li, Q. Tang, Y. Tian, W. Wang, W. Chen and F. Xi.

The article presented an optimization based procedure for simulating deformation of guidewires inserted into blood vessels. Optimization results are consistent with finite element simulations and experimental results.

The subject of the study is very interesting and the article is well written. I suggest to publish the paper in Applied Sciences journals with the minor revisions suggested below.

Ø The title of the article should be changed as “Investigation of guidewire deformation in blood vessels based on SQP optimization” to better reflect the study.

Ø Recall the definition of the W matrix (it should be the constraint matrix) used in the SQP process.

Ø Eq. (19), pag. 6. Define L right after Eq. (19) as this parameter is actually defined much later in Section 3.1, pag. 7. This clarification will improve paper readability.

Ø Eq. (14), pag. 5. Does Le take the same value for all guidewire segments? Is it Le=L/n?

Ø The title of Section 2.5 should read “Summary of the proposed method”.

Ø The title of Table 1 should read “Input data for the two-point contact guidewire deformation problem”.

Ø The title of Table 2 should read “Input data for the three-point contact guidewire deformation problem”.

Ø The title of Table 3 should read “Input data for the ABAQUS simulation of the two-point contact guidewire problem”. Furthermore, in the first row, “Gpa” should read “GPa”; in the third row, “Constarint” should read “Constraint”.

Ø The caption of Figure 3 should read “Flow chart of the proposed method”. Furthermore, in the figure, “design variable” should read “design variables”; “constraint function” should read “constraint functions”. Please check numbers of equations corresponding to constraint functions reported in the flowchart.

Ø The caption of Figure 4 should read “Optimized deformed shape of the two-point contact guidewire for different values of qB”. Furthermore, add a legend in the figure to indicate the solutions corresponding to the different values of qB.

Ø The caption of Figure 5 should read “Optimized deformed shape of the three-point contact guidewire for different values of qC”. Furthermore, add a legend in the figure to indicate the solutions corresponding to the different values of qC.

Ø The caption of Figure 6 should read “Optimized guidewire shapes for different contact conditions”.

Ø The caption of Figure 7 should read “Deformation and stress distribution of the two point-contact guidewire computed by ABAQUS”.

Ø The caption of Figure 8 should read “Comparison of the optimized deformed shape of the two point-contact guidewire computed via SQP optimization or by ABAQUS”.

Ø The caption of Figure 9 should read “(a) Calculation error for the two point-contact guidewire; (b) Physical meaning of calculation error”.

Ø The caption of Figure 13 should read “Deformed guidewire shape optimized via SQP”.

Ø The caption of Figure 14 should read “Position errors on SQP optimized guidewire shape”.

Ø References should be listed more precisely. Please implement the following changes in the revised article.

    - Ref. [23]. Use capital initial letters only for the first title word of proceedings papers;

- Refs. [22,25,27]. “Applied Sciences – Basel” should read “Applied Sciences”.

Ø The article reads well by most part although a number of editorial corrections should be implemented in the revised manuscript. The authors are kindly requested to check the consistency of the proposed changes with the original content of their article.
